China’s Grand Canal
For centuries, the power of Chinese emperors rose and fell with their control of the Grand Canal. Today, this waterway is shorter than it once was, but it is still the longest man-made river in the world. Importantly, the Grand Canal continues to provide a necessary cultural and economic(经济的) link for modern China.
The first canal system began around the year 605. China’s Emperor Yang realized that he needed a better way to feed his army. Specifically, he needed a way to move food quickly from China’s southern rice-growing area to the country’s north. So, the emperor ordered the building of the first section of the Grand Canal, connecting canals, lakes, and rivers. About one million people—mostly farmers—worked on the big project, which took six years.
In addition to moving rice around China, the Grand Canal was an important cultural conduit. Soldiers, businessmen, and artists transported ideas, local foods, and cultural practices from one part of China to another. According to some old stories, this is how Beijing got two of the best-known symbols. Peking duck, a dish from Shandong Province, and the Peking opera, from Anhui and Hubei areas, were both brought north through the canal.
For more than a thousand years, goods have been transported along the Grand Canal. Even today, the country’s watery highway plays an important economic role in China. Boats continue to carry tons of coal, food, and other goods to points between Hangzhou and Jining—now the northernmost city the canal reaches.
In 2014, the historic Grand Canal was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site(联合国教科文组织世界遗产地). It is hoped that the Grand Canal—one of the world’s great engineering achievements—will continue to link north and south China for centuries to come.

A warm shower helps you relax, and then after it warms you up, your core(核心)body temperature drops. This encourages you to fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly.
A study in 2019 said that a water temperature of 40℃ to 42. 4℃ produces the best-quality(最优质的)sleep. After people lie down, most of them take about 20 minutes to fall asleep. However, if you have a shower one to two hours before going to bed, you will fall asleep 10 minutes earlier.

Everybody is afraid of something. But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. It means what makes one person scared can be no big deal for someone else. For example, some kids don’t like the dark, some hate nightmares(噩梦)and scary movies, others may run away from dogs, snakes or some big insects.
Fear is a feeling that everyone has. To some extent, that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. We’re born with a sense of fear, so we can react to something that could be dangerous.
When there’s noise in the kitchen, the baby cries because of feeling afraid. Then the baby’s mum comes over to comfort him or her. With the help of the baby’s mum, the baby calms down and feels safe and good again. As babies grow up, things get better. Bigger kids hear that loud noise and think it’s no big deal. That’s because the best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it. As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the differences between what is reality(事实)and imagination. For example, when the lights are out, a kid may imagine what is under the bed. Using a flashlight(手电筒)to see that there’s nothing there can help fight that fear.
There are some fears that there’s no need to get over. Rachel, 11, is afraid of the jellyfish living off the coast of Australia. It’s OK for Rachel to be afraid of that big jellyfish because it’s truly dangerous. But she doesn’t have to be afraid of it all the time. It only lives in certain ocean waters. So when she’s not swimming in one of them, there’ll be no worries about the big jellyfish.

Seagrass, an underwater plant that grows on the ocean floor, is very important for sea life. It also helps prevent global warming by storing carbon, a harmful gas. However, scientists don’t know exactly how much seagrass is at the bottom of the ocean. With the help of tiger sharks, a team of researchers has discovered the world’s largest seagrass meadow(grassland)on the seafloor near the Bahamas.
Seagrass meadows are home to many different kinds of fish, shellfish, and so on. Large sea animals, such as sharks, also spend a lot of time there looking for food. Seagrass can grow in very deep and dark waters, making it difficult to find. But sharks can dive deep into the water and get to the areas people cannot reach.
After noticing tiger sharks swimming through seagrass off the Bahamas, an American scientist worked with a seagrass expert, trying to map the locations of the plants. The researchers fitted seven tiger sharks with cameras. Since tiger sharks swim in groups, they placed satellite tracking tags(卫星跟踪器)on eight other sharks to find out exactly where the animals swam. They collected hours of videos of the tiger sharks swimming through seagrass.
The researchers found more seagrass growing near the Bahamas than they expected—in fact, they believe that there is more seagrass there than anywhere else on Earth. The new finding increased the total number of seagrass known to exist by 41%. However, more research is needed to discover the true size of the seagrass meadow.
Scientists often depend on findings from divers and boats to study about the underwater world, but this team found that working with animals improved their understanding. They are now placing cameras on sea turtles to study seagrass in the Red Sea. Hopefully, more mysteries about seagrass will be solved.

The scientific method is used for simple experiments that students may do in the classroom or very difficult experiments that scientists are doing all over the world. It is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions.
There are usually four steps in the scientific method, including observation (观察), hypothesis (假设), experiment, and conclusion. The steps may not always be completed in the same order, but the first step is usually observation and asking a question about your observation. For example, you had a sick stomach, and ate a candy bar. An hour later, you observed that you felt much better. Here, you can ask a question, such as, “What makes a sick stomach feel better ”
The second step is to state a possible answer to the question, or a hypothesis, such as “” A good hypothesis includes three things: The explanation for the observations, it is able to be tested, and it will usually predict new outcomes or conclusions.
The third step is the experiment, to test the hypothesis. An experiment is a test which will either challenge or support the hypothesis. The hypothesis will then be true or false.
The final step is to think about what happened when you tested the hypothesis and draw a conclusion. The conclusion will either clearly support the hypothesis or it will not. If the results support the hypothesis, a conclusion can be written and you can share it with the rest of the world. If it does not support the hypothesis, you may choose to change the hypothesis or write a new one based on what was learned during the experiment.
67.Which sentence best expresses the main idea of the passage

A.The hypothesis. B.The conclusion.
C.The question. D.The observation.
70.Which of the following sentences about the experiment is TRUE
A.An experiment is a test to always support the hypothesis.
B.An experiment does not have to be part of the scientific method.

D.An experiment is only used when scientists are trying to prove a hypothesis.

Dear Students,
The end of our 2021—2022 school year is just over a few days away. This year seems to have gone by very quickly, while parts of the year seemed to pass very slowly. Although we have faced many difficulties, thank you for walking hand-in-hand with us to meet every challenge with confidence.
Some days were spent staying at home and surfing the Internet due to COVID-19. Your parents have worked tirelessly, and your teachers have also made great strides and efforts as a team. Because of the close cooperation between home and school, you, our MD students are still learning happily and effectively. You have now come to realize that not everything in life is certain, and understand the need to adapt to constant changes. While finding a way to solve difficulties, you have developed your resilience and strength of character through experience. I believe that after these years of uncertainty and struggle, you will become stronger and know not to take anything for granted. Everyone has built a more optimistic and positive attitude to confront the challenges of life. Greater the gains than that lost!
The most important aspect of our school curriculum is not information about the subject content, but the cultivation of attitude and character.
