I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for the parent-teacher night. We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face ” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.
I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if the world would judge my children. I always worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged. Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.
When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love. With time going by, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I’ve begun to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model.
Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!
4. What happened when the author went to attend the parent-teacher night
A. Athena was praised by others for her bravery and optimism.
B. Athena defended her mother against her classmate’s rudeness.
C. Some parents criticized their kids because of their misbehaviour.
D. The author felt shocked at her daughter’s response to her classmate.
5. According to paragraph 2, which of the following views might the author agree with
A. Friendship needs to be watered by love.
B. We should treat our children as best friends.
C. We should accept other people’s differences.
D. Our ability to handle difficulties can be developed.
6. How are the daughters influenced by the author’s birthmark
A. They have to drop out of school.
B. They have the same physical condition as me.
C. They have difficulty maintaining friendships.
D. They feel worried because they are often judged.
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. A birthmark to live with. B. My strongest supporters.
C. A kind and accepting heart. D. The confidence to be different.
B 5. C 6. C 7. B

Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.( 一个同学对我女儿喊道:“你妈妈的脸怎么了?”
根据第二段“I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humour just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humour in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to others that are around you.
I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their faces. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke
Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humour, we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness and a little light in our lives.
Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.
8. According to the passage, why is humour necessary and essential
A. It can lift people’s spirits.

9. What does the underlined phrase “busting a gut” in the third paragraph mean
A. Keeping silent. B. Speaking loud. C. Laughing hard. D. Explaining carefully.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards the present world
A. Critical. B. Satisfied. C. Indifferent. D. Not Mentioned.
11. In writing the passage, what does the author mainly intend to do
A. To talk about his own understanding of humour.
B. To encourage people to be humorous in daily life.
C. To convince people of the power of being optimistic.
D To introduce a practical way to get through daily life.
A 9. C 10. A 11. B

根据第三段“They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh.(他们听不懂让别人发笑的笑话) ”和本段倒数第二句“while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space(当他们就坐在那里,看着我仿佛我来自外太空) ”可知,此处是指“我”大笑不已,所以busting a gut意为“大笑不已”。故选C。

Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知) What about our body Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition(EC)ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.
If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs – they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats, and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved.
Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too. In another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer.
For further proof, we can look at the metaphors(比喻)that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages.
Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.
12. According to the author, what is the significance of EC
A. It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition.
B. It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain.
C. It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition.
D. It facilitates our understanding of the origin of psychology.
13. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from
A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs.
C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings.
14. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 4
A. Human speech is alive with metaphors.
B. Human senses have effects on thinking.
C. Human language is shaped by visual images.
D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph
A. To deepen the readers’ understanding of EC.
B. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice.
C. To guide the reader onto the path to career success.
D. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions.
A 13. D 14. B 15. B
根据文章第一段“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.(EC理论表明,我们的身体也负责思考或解决问题。更准确地说,思维塑造身体,身体同等程度地塑造思维。) ”可知,EC理论让我们更接近人类认知的真相。故选A。

根据倒数第二段“For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻) that we use without even thinking.(为了进一步证明,我们可以看看我们不假思索就使用的比喻)”和倒数第三段“Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction.(更多的研究支持了身心互动) ”可知,两个自然段都是为了证明上文第一段EC的观点“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.(EC理论表明,我们的身体也负责思考或解决问题。更准确地说,思维塑造身体,身体同等程度地塑造思维) ”。所以,作者想要印证的是人类的感官对思维有影响。故选B。

It’s a common practice to take off your shoes when_you enter your home. Many do this to prevent dirt and bacteria (细菌) from getting inside._____16_____
Technically, yes. As you walk around outside, your shoes pick up bacteria, viruses and dirt. A2017 study showed that more than 26 percent of the soles (底) of shoes worn in homes contained Clostridium difficile, or C. diff, a common healthcare-associated infection that can be deadly.
But if that worries you get this -- the average person has more than 100 trillion bacteria in and on their body. ____17____And if your pets go outside, they’re bringing in dirty stuff on their paws and fur. Thankfully, most of the bacteria on your body and in your home are harmless. Same with the stuff you track in on your shoes.
___18___Take them off if you’ve got little kids crawling around on the floors, who may then put their fingers in their mouths. Disinfect if someone in your home is sensitive to infection. And since pollen (花粉) can be transferred from shoes to floors, and especially carpets, kick off your shoes if someone at home has allergies.
If you’re really determined to cut down on dirt, keep your slippers on rather than going barefoot. Each of your feet has about 125,000 sweat glands (汗腺) on the sole, and any sweat on your feet can be transferred to carpets._____19_____
In the end, the choice of whether or not to go shoeless is yours. ____20____But whether your shoes are on or off, you may want to clean your home as soon as possible.
A. But is that really an issue
B. Wet carpets, in turn, trap dirt.
C. Wet carpets make a home for bacteria.
D. Your home is covered in bacteria, too.
E. Despite this, other people think this is unnecessary.
F. Some people just like the feel of walking around in bare feet.
G. Still, there are some cases where it may make sense to remove your shoes.
A 17. D 18. G 19. B 20. F

A“But is that really an issue (但这真的是个问题吗?)” 故选A。
根据空前“But if that worries you, get this -- the average person has more than 100 trillion bacteria in and on their body.(但如果这让你担心,看看这个——平均每个人体内和体表都有超过100万亿个细菌。)” D“Your home is covered in bacteria, too.(你的家里也布满了细菌。)”

And since pollen (花粉) can be transferred from shoes to floors, and especially carpets, kick off your shoes if someone at home has allergies.(如果你有小孩在地板上爬来爬去,那就把它们脱掉,因为他们可能会把手指放进嘴里。 G“Still, there are some cases where it may make sense to remove your shoes.(尽管如此,在某些情况下,脱鞋是有意义的。)”
根据空前内容“If you’re really determined to cut down on dirt, keep your slippers on rather than going barefoot. Each of your feet has about 125,000 sweat glands (汗腺) on the sole, and any sweat on your feet can be transferred to carpets.(如果你真的下定决心要减少污垢,那就穿上拖鞋,而不是光脚走路。
根据空前内容“In the end, the choice of whether or not to go shoeless is yours.(最后,是否穿鞋是你自己的选择。)” F“Some people just like the feel of walking around in bare feet.(有些人就是喜欢光着脚走路的感觉。)”

A Mother’s Day Surprise
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

A Dream City at One with Nature
Hello, everyone!
I'm Li Hua. Today I'd like to share my opinions on “Build A Dream City at One with Nature”.As middle school students, it's our duty to help build an ideal home that coexists with nature.
We often say that the earth is our homeland and human society comes from nature. People should live harmoniously with nature. All the materials we need to live with come from nature. But we should also repay the nature, rather than blindly solicit. Planting more trees is important to the environment. What’s more, choosing green transportation to reduce pollution is friendly to nature. The more people choose the public transportation, the less traffic jam there will be and the cleaner the air will be.
I believe in that way, man and nature will become more harmonious to get along. The dream city at one with nature will last forever.

11. In writing the passage, what does the author mainly intend to do
A. To talk about his own understanding of humour.
B. To encourage people to be humorous in daily life.
C. To convince people of the power of being optimistic.
D. To introduce a practical way to get through daily life.
D
Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知) What about our body Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition(EC)ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.
If you think about it for a moment it makes total sense.

But if that worries you, get this -- the average person has more than 100 trillion bacteria in and on their body.
