The Star
By Jane Taylor
Twinkle, twinkle, little star!
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high.
Like a diamond (钻石) in the sky.
When the burning sun is gone.
When he nothing shines upon.
Then you show your little light.
Twinkle, twinkle all the night.
The dark blue sky you keep.
And often through my curtains peep (偷看).
For you never shut your eyes.
Till the sun is in the sky.

The panda is one of the animals most in danger. There are about 1,000 pandas living in nature reserves today. Zoos and research centers look after about 160 pandas. Scientists are studying how they live and more baby pandas are born in the zoo.
Pandas live in the forests and mountains of south-west China. They mainly live on bamboo, and each panda needs to eat a lot of bamboo every day. The area of bamboo is becoming smaller and smaller for many different reasons, so pandas have less and less land to live on. Pandas don’t have many babies, and baby pandas often die. The situation is becoming very serious.
Our government is working hard to save pandas. There are more than 30 nature reserves to protect pandas but these are not enough. The government has made a new plan to help pandas. The nature reserves will be bigger and bamboo will grow better. Then the pandas will have enough food to eat and enough places to live in Pandas born in the zoos may go back to live in the nature reserves.

Wild animals are our friends, but the number of them is getting smaller and smaller. We should try to protect them. The four animals below are now in danger.
Tibetan Antelopes: Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) are medium-sized animals. They mainly feed on grass. They are usually found in groups of about 20. They are killed for their wool, which is warm, soft and fine and can be made into expensive clothes. Although people can get the wool without killing the animals, people simply kill them before taking the wool. The number of them is dropping year by year. There are less than 75,000 Tibetan antelopes left in the world, down from a million 50 years ago.
Golden Monkeys : Golden monkeys are mainly found in Sichuan, Gansu, Shanxi provinces and Shengnongjia mountainous area of Hubei Province. Golden monkeys have golden-orange fur. They move around in the daytime, usually in groups of as many as 100 to 200 heads, or 20 to 30 heads. They feed on fruits and young leaves of bamboos. But people are destroying the environment where they live. Trees and bamboos are disappearing, so golden monkeys have less and less to eat.
Elephants: Elephants are very big and strong. They are bigger than any other animals on land. They are grey and have long trunks and tusks. They have poor eyesight, but very good hearing and smell. They can lift heavy things and break down branches with their trunks. Elephants are very friendly towards each other and towards their neighbours. Normally, they live in a group for many years. Young male elephants do not leave the group until they are about 12 years old. Now, there are very few elephants in the world. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller because their living areas are used for farming. Also, people hunt them for their tusks.
Wolves: Wolves are not very big. They have grey fur. Wolves have very good eyesight, hearing and smell. Wolves’ food is various. They eat animals, insects and snails. They are friendly to each other and never attack people. They do not kill for fun. Wolves are in danger, too. They are losing their living areas because people cut down forests. Canada geese do not live only in Canada. They spend spring and summer in Alaska and northern Canada. In autumn, many of the geese migrate to warmer places. They usually fly to northern Mexico, but lately many began to fly to the USA. This maybe because it is warmer there now than it was in the past.
Canada geese fly very fast. They can fly as fast as 100 kilometers per hour. The geese usually travel in groups of about 100, but groups of 1,000 are common. On cloudy days, the geese will fly lower, but on sunny days they can fly as high as 2,500 meters.
Canada geese know when to migrate by checking how long and how warm the days are. They also wait until the young geese learn to fly. When the day becomes shorter and the temperature gets lower, they know it is time to leave. This is usually at the end of August. A few days before leaving , all the geese get very excited. They start honking and making lots of noise.
The Canada geese make a “V” shape in the sky when they fly south. This helps them fly more easily through the air. The first goose pushes through the air, and this makes it easier for the other geese to follow. Each goose takes turns to be the first goose.
No one is sure how the geese find their way. Some scientists think that geese use the stars at night to help them know where they are.
