He works full time during holidays and takes odd jobs at weekends, on and off the campus, to pay for his tuition and support himself. After his second year at university he had to stop his studies at London for a year in order to earn enough money to take up his studying again. In the five years since he left home he’s moved house twice. The first place he got was a room rented from a family with three young noisy children. After he started going to university he found he couldn’t study at home so he moved to another place. He shared an apartment with two other students and paid for his own room. This place was good. But he was constantly short of money, so when his landlord raised the rent of his room by $10 two months ago, he again decided he had to find a new place.

In Australia, as the world locked down to slow the tide of the Covid-19 outbreak, Dr. Daniel Reardon, an astrophysicist living in Melbourne, was admitted to hospital after getting four magnets (磁铁) stuck up his nose in an attempt to invent a device that stops people touching their faces during the coronavirus outbreak. Originally, Reardon, who despite his qualifications has by his own account really no experience or expertise in building circuits or things, planned to use his time creating a device that — worn as a necklace, with a powerful neodymium magnet worn on the wrist — would set off an alarm if you brought your hand too close to your face. However, it turned out that Reardon’s facility did the opposite. The necklace screams continuously unless you move your hand close to your face.
After this initial failure it seems, lockdown boredom really set in. Reardon started playing with the magnets, clipping (夹住) them to his face and then to his nostril. Things went downhill pretty quickly when he clipped them to his other nostril.
He placed two magnets inside his nostrils, and two on the outside. When he removed the magnets from the outside of his nose, the two inside stuck together. He decided to Google the problem and found the solution was more magnets on the outside to offset the pull from the ones inside.
As he was pulling downwards to try and remove the magnets, they clipped on to each other and he lost his grip. And those two magnets ended up in his left nostril while the other one was in his right. At that point he ran out of magnets.
Ultimately, after some further struggles involving some pliers which became magnetized, Reardon was hospitalized — with his partner, who works at a hospital, taking him in because she wanted all her colleagues to laugh at him. After the magnets were successfully removed, Reardon received some medical notes which contained the phrase: “Denies difficulty breathing. Denies further magnets.”
24. Why did Reardon start his invention
A. To amuse himself. B. To remind wearers.
C. To stop covid-19. D. To kill time.
25. What resulted in Reardon’s unsuccessful attempt
A. He lacked qualifications. B. He was inexperienced.
C. He had no spare parts. D. He was fully occupied.
26. What can we learn from paragraphs 3 & 4
A. Each of Reardon’s nostrils had two magnets in.
B. It’s dangerous to play with neodymium magnets.
C People tend to surf the Internet for their problems.
D. Reardon could have saved face with enough magnets.
27. What does Reardon’s partner think of magnets getting stuck in his nose
A. Funny. B. Awkward. C. Boring. D. Creative.
B 25. B 26. C 27. A

根据第一段“In Australia, as the world locked down to slow the tide of the Covid-19 outbreak, Dr. Daniel Reardon, an astrophysicist living in Melbourne, was admitted to hospital after getting four magnets (磁铁) stuck up his nose in an attempt to invent a device that stops people touching their faces during the coronavirus outbreak.(在澳大利亚,全世界都在封锁以减缓新冠肺炎疫情的蔓延,居住在墨尔本的天体物理学家丹尼尔·里尔登博士被人往鼻子里塞了四个磁铁,试图发明一种装置,在冠状病毒爆发期间阻止人们触摸自己的脸,结果被送进了医院)”可知,里尔登开始他的发明是为了提醒佩戴者。
根据第一段“Originally, Reardon, who despite his qualifications has by his own account really no experience or expertise in building circuits or things, planned to use his time creating a device that — worn as a necklace, with a powerful neodymium magnet worn on the wrist — would set off an alarm if you brought your hand too close to your face.(里尔登虽然有资格,但据他自己说,他在制造电路或其他东西方面没有任何经验或专业知识,他最初计划利用他的时间创造一种设备——作为项链佩戴,手腕上戴着一块强大的钕磁铁——如果你的手太靠近你的脸,它就会发出警报)”可知,他没有经验导致里尔登的尝试失败。
根据第三段“He decided to Google the problem and found the solution was more magnets on the outside to offset the pull from the ones inside.(他决定用谷歌来解决这个问题,并发现解决办法是在外面放更多的磁铁来抵消里面的吸引力)”可知,人们倾向于上网解决问题。故选C。

Think “art”. What comes to your mind Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings in the Palace Museum Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a dancing pattern of lights
The artworks by American artist Janet Echelman look like colourful floating clouds when they are lit up at night. Visitors to one of her artworks in Vancouver could not only enjoy looking at it, they could also interact with it-literally. They did this by using their phones to change its colours and patterns. Exhibits such as these are certainly new and exciting, but are they really art
Whatever your opinion, people have been expressing their thoughts and ideas through art for thousands of years. To do this, they have used a variety of tools and technologies. Yet Michelangelo and others have been labelled (定义) as “artists”, but not “technicians”. This means that art and technology, have always been seen as two very separate (不同的) things.
Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology. As a result, the art world is changing greatly. Now art is more accessible to us than ever before. Take for example one of China’s most famous paintings from the Song Dynasty, Along the River During the Qingming Festival. As this artwork is rarely on display, people have sometimes queued up to six hours for a chance to see it. Once in front of the painting, they only have limited time to spend taking in its five metres of scenes along the Bian River in Bianjing. Thanks to technology however, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of this painting. Three-dimensional (3D) animation means that viewers can see the characters move around and interact with their surroundings. They can also watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime.
The art-tech combination (结合) is also changing our concepts of “art” and the “artist”. Not only can we interact with art, but also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more and more people are exploring their creative sides. The result has been exciting new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.
However, where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure—with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected.
28. What’s the function of the first paragraph
A. To explain the art. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To give the background. D. To give a definition.
29. Why is “Michelangelo” referred to in the third paragraph
A. To show he is a famous artist.
B. To show he is also a technician.
C. To show art is different from technology.
D. To show art is the same as technology.
30. What’s mainly talked about in the passage
A. The history of technology and art.
B. The relation of technology and art.
C. The future of technology and art.
D. The examples of technology and art.
31. What can we know about the author’s attitude to the combination of art and technology
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain
B 29. C 30. B 31. A
What comes to your mind Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings in the Palace Museum Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a dancing pattern of lights (说到“艺术”,你想到了什么?是卢浮宫里希腊或罗马的雕塑?抑或是故宫博物院里中国的名画?又也许,仅仅是也许,是一片舞动的光影?)”以及后文内容,可知,本文主题是技术与艺术结合,所以本段的作用是引出话题。故选B项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Whatever your opinion, people have been expressing their thoughts and ideas through art for thousands of years. To do this, they have used a variety of tools and technologies. Yet Michelangelo and others have been labelled (定义) as “artists”, but not “technicians”. This means that art and technology, have always been seen as two very separate (不同的) things.(无论你的看法如何,数千年来人们一直通过艺术表达自己的思想和理念。为此,人们使用了各种各样的工具和技术。然而,米开朗基罗等人一直被称为“艺术家”而非“技巧大师”。这就意味着艺术和科技一直被看作两个截然不同的领域)”可知,本段提到米开朗基罗,是为了展示艺术不同于技术。故选C项。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology. As a result, the art world is changing greatly. Now art is more accessible to us than ever before.(然而,今天,技术的进步导致了艺术与技术的结合。因此,艺术界正在发生巨大的变化。现在我们比以往任何时候都更容易接触艺术)”以及第五段“The art-tech combination (结合) is also changing our concepts of “art” and the “artist”. Not only can we interact with art, but also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more and more people are exploring their creative sides. The result has been exciting new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.(艺术与科技的结合也在改变着我们对“艺术”和“艺术家”的概念。我们不仅可以与艺术互动,还可以参与艺术的创作。随着新的技术工具触手可及,越来越多的人正在探索他们的创造力。其结果是令人兴奋的新艺术形式,如数字绘画和视频)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了将技术与艺术结合,也就是技术与艺术的关系。故选B项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure—with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected.(然而,技术下一步将把艺术带向何方,谁也说不准。但有一件事是肯定的,随着这么多艺术家探索新的可能性,我们肯定可以期待意想不到的事情)”可知,作者认为艺术与技术结合将可以期待,所以是积极的的态度。故选A项。
D
In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye garden for its Chelsea Flower Show presentation. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whose time has come again, with hand tie-dyed fashion also making a comeback in recent years.
The revival has been encouraged by Covid lockdowns, “which allowed people to explore the craft at home,” says natural-dyeing enthusiast and teacher Susan Dye. It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on in quite the same way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon emissions to animal cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection. “Put it this way, 97% of dyes used in the industry are petrochemically (石油化学产品) based,” says sustainable fashion consultant Jackie Andrews, who helped advise the UN Ethical Fashion Initiative. “We’ve got net zero targets which mean we’re going to have to remove all those petrochemicals from the manufacturing cycle.”
Fashion is a huge polluter. According to the UN Environment Program, the industry is responsible for up to one-fifth of all industrial water pollution — due to the fact that most clothes today are produced in poorer countries where regulation is weak and enforcement weaker still. Waste water is dumped directly into rivers and streams, poisoning the land as well as the water sources of people and animals who rely on them.
It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well as clothes, might turn to natural plant dyeing. From the beauty of the raw materials-often wild plants-to the property of only bonding with natural fiber like cotton and linen, from the minor footprint of upclycling old clothing that has grayed or faded over time to the vibrant and long-lasting dyeing results, plant dyeing feels like a quiet act of rebellion. This is why, while beginners start with simply changing their clothes’ color, new worlds open. Many of today’s natural dyers grow their own dye plants, run local community workshops, and advocate for change in industrialized fashion systems and beyond.
32. What is the main reason for the growing discomfort mentioned in paragraph 2
A. The adoption of petrochemical-based dyes.
B. The challenging net zero targets to be achieved.
C. The fashion industry’s focus on luxurious designs.
D. The disturbing consequences of the fashion industry.
33. The author illustrates “Fashion is a huge polluter” by ______.
A. making a comparison B. giving examples
C. listing numbers D. introducing a new topic
34. What does the underlined phrase “a quiet act of rebellion” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. A protest against turning to natural fiber.
B. An objection to upcycling old clothing.
C. A struggle for a sustainable fashion industry.
D. A resistance to vibrant colors in natural dyeing.
35. What would be the most suitable title for the passage
A. The Environmental Impact of Natural Dyeing
B. Fashion Revolution’s Dye Garden Presentation
C. The Return of Natural Dyeing with Ethical Appeal
D. The Petrochemical Dye Industry and Its Challenges
D 33. B 34. C 35. C
根据第二段“It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on in quite the same way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon emissions to animal cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection. (然而,如果不是因为人们对时尚的沉重足迹不断感到不安,这种做法不太可能以同样的方式流行起来。从碳排放到虐待动物,时尚都受到了广泛的关注。)”可知,时尚业也存在碳排放到虐待动物问题,所以人们感到不适是因为时尚产业令人不安的后果。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Fashion is a huge polluter. (时尚是一个巨大的污染源。根据联合国环境规划署的数据,该行业造成了高达五分之一的工业水污染,因为目前大多数服装都是在监管薄弱、执法力度更弱的贫穷国家生产的。废水被直接倾倒到河流和溪流中,毒害了土地以及依赖它们的人和动物的水源。)”可知,这一段利用实际例子来说明时尚是一个巨大的污染源。故选B。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well as clothes, might turn to natural plant dyeing.
根据第一段“In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye garden for its Chelsea Flower Show presentation. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Breaking the Habit of People-Pleasing
If you feel like you may be a people-pleaser, you’re not alone. Most people have a growing desire for pleasing others. ____36____ It can also result in weak boundaries, problems with decision-making, and low self-worth. For that reason, it’s important to recognize and overcome your own people-pleasing behaviors. Here are simple exercises that you can start working on today.
1. Practice being alone
____37____ Trust that people will not abandon you, even if you don’t drop everything for them. Believe you are lovable for who you are, not what you do. Practice this by going to a movie or restaurant alone.
2 Keep plans with yourself
____38____ Otherwise, you are sending a message to your brain that a plan you make with yourself does not hold as much value as a plan you make with someone else. Don’t break any plans you make with yourself, whether it’s going to the gym or studying for an exam.
3. Practice saying “no”
If you’re a people-pleaser you may find it hard to say “no” because you feel it comes across as cruel or uncaring. ____39____Be clear, be direct, and use “I” statements. Try statements like: “I would really love to be able to help you, but unfortunately, I’m already committed at that time.”
By consistently integrating these strategies into your life, I’m confident you’ll break your people-pleasing habits. ____40____ This will yield an overall improvement in self-confidence and life satisfaction.
A. So it is not necessary to say no.
B. But it absolutely does not have to.
C. Learn to love your own company.
D. You’ll develop more healthy, interdependent relationships.
E. You are not confident about the plans you make with yourself.
F. Your own plans are as important as plans you make with others.
G. People-pleasing behavior can lead to mental and physical problems.
G 37. C 38. F 39. B 40. D
根据下文“It can also result in weak boundaries, problems with decision-making, and low self-worth.
F项“你自己的计划和你和别人一起制定的计划一样重要”符合题意,引出下文“Otherwise, you are sending a message to your brain that a plan you make with yourself does not hold as much value as a plan you make with someone else. (否则,你是在向你的大脑传递一个信息:你自己制定的计划不如你和别人制定的计划有价值)”。故选F。
【39题详解】
根据上文“If you’re a people-pleaser you may find it hard to say “no” because you feel it comes across as cruel or uncaring.(如果你是一个取悦别人的人,你可能会发现很难说“不”,因为你觉得这让人觉得残忍或冷漠)”和下文“Be clear, be direct, and use “I” statements. Try statements like: “I would really love to be able to help you, but unfortunately, I’m already committed at that time.”(要清晰、直接,并使用“我”的陈述。试着这样说:“我真的很想帮助你,但不幸的是,我那时已经有约了。”)”可知,取悦别人的人很难直接说“不”,但可以用比较委婉的方式,比如“我真的很想帮助你,但不幸的是,我那时已经有约了”。由此推知,空处应陈述不一定非要说“不”。B项“但绝对不是非得这样”符合语境,引出下文用比较委婉的拒绝方式。故选B。
【40题详解】
根据上文“By consistently integrating these strategies into your life, I’m confident you’ll break your people-pleasing habits.

As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite supermarket, I studied the customer in front of me who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she had a tired look on her face-as if life had beaten her down too many times.
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat, rice, and potatoes. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases-well, almost. There were also lots of instant noodles and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off.
She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She finally took one out and turned it over several times, trying to find a price before finally turning to me.
“I’m sorry to bother you,” she began timidly. “But can you tell me how much this is I forgot my glasses at home.” “Of course,” I said with a laugh.
When I finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back. “They’ve become so expensive, haven’t they ” I murmured sympathetically.
“Next!” The cashier called before she could answer, and she moved forward to begin her transaction. When the store employee finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. She opened an old purse and began counting small bills and change. It was obvious she didn’t have enough, and she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without.
One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to discard much-needed goods while the cashier patiently deducted (减去) things with a pleasant smile, setting them aside.
The man right behind me complained loudly enough for all to hear, and the young woman’s cheeks reddened with embarrassment. I wanted desperately to pay for her groceries outright, but I knew that would embarrass her even more.
”Take your time,“ I added gently as she tried to decide what other necessity she could return. “I’m in no hurry.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
The woman finally paid and my turn came to pay the bill.

Paragraph 2:
Then I caught up with the woman at the entrance to the supermarket.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The woman finally paid and my turn came to pay the bill. By then, I had rearranged my own purchases. I moved forward and placed several items with the magazine, pointed to the pile of items the woman had taken out, added all my meat and fresh milk, and whispered, “Separate bags, same bill please,” to the cashier. Seeming to know what I was planning to do, she nodded, smiled, and quickly packed them.
Then I caught up with the woman at the entrance to the supermarket. “This is for you-all the items you have taken out just now,” I said and handed the bag to her. “How can I accept this ” she said and stared at me in great surprise. “It’s nothing. To be frank, we have all been in such an embarrassing situation at one time or another,” I replied warmly and firmly. The woman then accepted the bag, tears welling up in her eyes. It was at that moment that I realized we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give.

After this initial failure, it seems, lockdown boredom really set in.
C. People tend to surf the Internet for their problems.
D. Reardon could have saved face with enough magnets.
27. What does Reardon’s partner think of magnets getting stuck in his nose
A. Funny. B. Awkward. C. Boring. D. Creative.

A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain

As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite supermarket, I studied the customer in front of me who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she had a tired look on her face-as if life had beaten her down too many times.
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat rice, and potatoes.
