Helen Thayer, one of the greatest explorers of the 20th century, loves challenges. She says, “I like to see what’s on the other side of the hill.” She has gone almost everywhere to do that.
In 1988, at the age of 50, she became the first woman to travel alone to the North Pole. She pulled her own sled piled with 160 pounds of supplies, and during her trip no one brought her fresh supplies. Accompanied only by her dog Charlie, she survived cold weather and meetings with polar bears. In fact, Charlie saved her life when one of them attacked her. Near the end of her trip, a forceful wind blew away the majority of her supplies. The last week of the trip, she survived on a handful of nuts and a little water each day.
Helen goes to challenging places not only for adventure, but also for education. Before her Arctic(北极)journey, she started a website called Adventure Classroom. On the site, she shares her adventures in order to motivate (激发) students. She explains, “Although kids often see the world in a negative way, without hope for their future, we work to inspire them to set goals, plan for success and never give up...”
Helen grew up in New Zealand. Her parents were athletes and mountain climbers. Following her parents’ example, she climbed her first mountain at 9. Later, she climbed the highest mountains in North and South America, the former USSR and New Zealand.
In 1996, she took on another challenge — the Sahara Desert. She and her husband, Bill, walked 2,400 miles across it! In 2001, she and Bill traveled on foot from west to east through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. They hope to travel to Sichuan and Tibet in China to study pandas this year.
Helen plans to continue taking trips. She’ll use her explorations, writing, photography and environmental work to create programs for her Adventure Classroom website. She wants to inspire her students never to stop facing challenges!

Modern medicine and the latest technology can save many lives. If you live in a country where healthcare is readily available and accessible, then your chances of recovering from illnesses or accidents are very good. But for many people in the US who are uninsured (无保险的), they can’t afford these new medical treatments. That’s why Doctor Demetrio Aguila in Norfolk lets poor patients pay for surgery (外科手术) through volunteer work.
“For years I had been doing surgery for patients and taking care of their health problems. Then I would find out months later, sometimes years later, that I had caused their financial ruin,” Aguila said. Serious illnesses can completely deplete a family’s savings, leaving them no choice but to go bankrupt (破产).
Then he formed Healing Hands M25 as a way to give poor patients the medical fees they need by donating their time to community service. The process is pretty simple. They practice partners with local charitable organizations. The patient picks the charity and donates his time and sweat; Aguila determines the amount of volunteer hours the patient has to complete. “We’ve lowered the cost of healthcare. We’ve made it fair for everybody involved,” Aguila said.
The first patient to participate in the program was Jeffrey Jenson who worked for 560 hours to pay for surgery on his leg. Jenson asked his friends and family to help him complete the hours. Jenson said that his volunteer work greatly affected his life as much as the surgery. “The M25 program is not about money — it’s about if people come together to help other people, then the community becomes better,” said Jenson.
This program is a big win for the patients, the local community, and Dr Aguila who knows he has done everything he could to help his patients.
28. How does Aguila make poor patients pay for surgery
A. In cash. B. Through an insurance company.
C. By doing volunteer work. D. By serving the doctor.

C. Why Aguila runs Healing Hands M25. D. Why patients choose Healing Hands M25.
31. What is Jenson’s attitude towards the M25 program
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.

Humans are very social creatures. In addition to verbal communication, we also use our bodies to help us better express our thoughts and feelings. This non-verbal communication is known as body language.
Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture. It actually developed as a form of communication before humans could speak or write. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.
In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are communicating many messages to others every day without even using words. For example, you might move your head from side to side to express the word “no” instead of actually saying the word. Or, you might give a “thumbs (母指) up” to show that you like or agree with something.
But now that we are spending more time online, we may not have as many in-person interactions as before. Because of this, our means of non-verbal communication has changed, but is still an important way to express our thoughts.
Our “digital body language” is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. Instead of using voice messages, we can video chat with our friends to show them our smiling face. Another way to express our emotions digitally is through emojis (表情符号). When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content and leaving out tones and facial expressions. That’s when emojis can help in communication.
Whether using video chat to show our expression or sending an emoji, don’t forget the importance of digital body language and non-verbal communication.
32. What does the author mean by saying “Humans are very social creatures”
A. Humans like living in groups. B. Humans need to communicate.
C. Humans depend on each other. D. Humans differ from other beings.
33. Why are the two examples mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To explain how to express “no”.
B. To prove how much one likes something.
C. To show how to communicate messages.
D. To show how much we underestimate body language.
34. What makes digital body language more and more important
A. The way of communication. B. The voice messages we use.
C. The time we spend online. D. The invention of emojis.
35. How can emojis help in communication
A. By revealing the content. B. By helping us video chat.
C. By expressing our emotions. D. By leaving out facial expressions.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 A Special Gift
I always believe that there are certain gifts sticking in our minds for a variety of reasons. The gift given to me that I treasured most was a doll named Patsy. I met her in a gift shop when I was nine. On holding Patsy I immediately fell in love with her and couldn't even bear to part from her. At that time, my mother noticed it and at Christmas, as I received the gift from her, I was surprised to find my dream doll in the box. From then on Patsy became my baby and I loved her dearly.
A month later, I was on my way to the cinema when I glimpsed(看见) some lovely gifts in pretty boxes through the window of the gift shop. Seeing them reminded me that my mother's birthday was a few months away. Wouldn't it be nice, I thought, if I could give her something really special, just like the gift she gave me I stepped inside and caught sight of a beautiful dress hung on the coat stand(架子), which I was sure my mother would like. So I asked the saleswoman its price.
The lady must have seen my disappointment when she told me how much it would cost. But she had a suggestion which immediately lifted my spirits. She took out a notebook from under the counter and wrote my name as well as the item I wanted to buy on it, and in return I paid her five cents from my six cents pocket money. It meant no candies that day but I didn't care. At the age of nine, I made my very first installment (分期付款)and felt like a grown-up. From then on, every Saturday on my way to the cinema, I went to the shop and paid a few cents which the lady dutifully recorded on her notebook.

范文:
The day before my mother' s birthda y , I paid the last two cents . As the lady wrapped the gift in brown paper, tied it with a piece of string, and carefully put it into a gift box, I attentively signed my name on the notebook, meaning that I had paid off all my debts. I thanked her and excitedly left the shop. "Be careful you don't lose it," she called after me. "I won't!" I responded. Carrying the gift, I skipped away, singing happily to myself.
The special day finally came. I placed the box on the table, hopping from one foot to the other, as my mom untied the knot and slowly peeled away the brown paper. My heart was racing. Then, as I bit into my bottom lip, the content was revealed. "Do you like it " | asked excitedly. My mom didn't say a word, but I got the answer from her face on which the same delighted smile as mine was worn when I received Patsy from her.
