With many Chicken Soup for the Soul books in development, we are always looking for new talent. So whether you are a regular contributor or new to our family, please share your stories with us.
Here is the recipe for submission.
Story Guidelines
·Tell a heartwarming story about something that has happened to you or someone you know.
·The story should start “in the action” and draw in the reader. Do not start your story with an introduction about what you are going to say.
·Don’t try fancy moves with tenses. Writing in the present tense about something that happened in the past rarely works.
·Keep your story within 1200 words. Tighten!
Tips about submitting
The only way to submit your stories is to do it on our website. A message, “Thank you! Your information has been received”, is the only confirmation of your submission. There is no email from us. If you have any problems, please write to: webmaster@.
There are many topics in each of our books. If you have a story that you think fits two of the topics, you may submit it to both. Also, there is no limit to the number of stories you may submit for each book.
After publication
If your story is selected to be published, you will be asked to sign our standard permission release agreement. This means that you maintain ownership of your story but you give us the rights to publish it and use it again in any future book or our other products.
After your story is published, you will receive ten free copies of the book your story appears in. You will be entitled to buy cases of your books at half price. You will also receive our monthly newsletter with advance notice of new books.

“Thank you for letting me observe your classes. It was an unusual experience,” the email began, which got my heart racing.
I am an industry scientist, and in my spare time I was teaching a course for computer science students at a local university. By that point in the semester, I hadn't asked the students to solve any technical problems or even open their computers. Instead, I taught them teamwork and communication and skills they’d need in industry. My approach caught the attention of the university, so a teaching expert appeared in my class. This made me wonder whether university officials would agree with the unique view I brought from industry—or remove me from the classroom.
I thought of these lessons when I started to develop the university class. The part-time role was appealing because I was eager to share my expertise and get back to working with students. But I didn’t want to use my old teaching style, which focused on lectures and whiteboard exercises. I wanted to develop the same qualities I was looking for in job candidates at my company.
I decided to use games and challenges to encourage teamwork and creativity. In one, students had to work together to decide how to survive a tough desert environment. In another, they built the tallest structure they could out of spaghetti and candies. The teaching expert sat in on one such class.
I worried they might have been taken aback(吓到). But after that unsettling opening, their email was positive: “I understand the important message you're conveying,” they wrote. “Today's industry is about people, not just computers. Keep up the good work.” Hearing that my teaching had a positive impact on their career paths was truly rewarding.
In the end, education is not just about sharing knowledge. It's also about helping students develop soft skills that will help them succeed wherever they plan to go, be it academia or industry.
4. What made the author's heart race
A. Uneasiness. B. Excitement. C. Heart failure. D. Lack of sleep.
5. Why did an expert come to the author's class
A. To teach communication skills. B. To take over the author's work.
C. To learn about the author's teaching. D. To help solve technical problems.
6. What does the author teach in class
A. Survival skills. B. Soft skills. C. Game design. D. Book knowledge.
7. What can we infer about the teaching expert
A. He has a great impact on the author's career.
B. He attaches importance to sharing knowledge.
C. He points out the leading role of the computer.
D. He shares the same teaching idea with the author.
A 5. C 6. B 7. D

根据第二段最后两句“My approach caught the attention of the university, so a teaching expert appeared in my class. This made me wonder whether university officials would agree with the unique view I brought from industry—or remove me from the classroom.(我的方法引起了学校的注意,所以我班上出现了一位教学专家。这让我怀疑学校官员是否会同意我从工业界带来的独特观点,或者把我从课堂上赶出去。)”可知,学校派专家来到作者的课堂是来了解和评判他的教学方式。故选C。

Most environmental pollution comes from humans and their inventions. The electric bulbs are thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time. However, too much of a good thing has started to negatively impact the environment. Light pollution, the extreme or inappropriate use of outdoor artificial light, is affecting human health and wildlife behavior. There is a global movement to reduce light pollution, and everyone can help.
Light pollution is a global issue. This became particularly obvious when the World Atlas (地图册)of Night Sky Brightness, a computer-generated map based on thousands of satellite photos, was published in 2016. Vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia are glowing with light, while only Siberia, the Sahara, and the Amazon are in total darkness.
Artificial light can wreak havoc on natural body rhythms in both humans and animals. It interrupts sleep and confuses the circadian rhythm(生理节奏)一the internal, twenty-four-hour clock that guides day and night activities and affects physiological processes in nearly all living organisms. One of these processes is the production of the hormone melatonin(褪黑素), which is released when it is dark and is prevented when there is light. An increased amount of light at night lowers melatonin production, which results in lack of sleep, headaches, stress, anxiety, and other health problems. Blue light, in particular, has been shown to reduce levels of melatonin in humans. It is found in cell phones and other computer devices, as well as in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the kinds of bulbs that have become popular at home and in industrial and city lighting due to their low cost and energy efficiency.
Studies show that light pollution is also impacting animal behaviors, such as migration (迁徙)patterns and habitat formation. Because of light pollution, sea turtles guided by moonlight during migration get confused, lose their way, and often die. Large numbers of insects, a primary food source for birds and other animals, are drawn to artificial light and are instantly killed upon contact with light sources. Even animals living under the deep sea may be affected by underwater artificial lighting. One study looked at how animals in sea responded to brightly lit panels put under water off the coast of Wales. Fewer filter feeding animals(滤食性动物), such as the sea squirt(海鞘), made their homes near the lighted panels. This could mean that the artificial light is altering ocean ecosystems.
The good news is that light pollution, unlike many other forms of pollution, is reversible(可逆的)and each one of us can make a difference! Now, many people are taking action to reduce light pollution and bring back the natural night sky. Individuals are urged to use outdoor lighting only when and where it is needed, to make sure outdoor lights are properly shielded (遮挡)and direct light down instead of up into the sky, and to close window blinds, shades, and curtains at night to keep light inside.
8. What does the underlined phrase “wreak havoc on” in Para. 3 probably mean
A. Greatly improve. B. Well maintain.
C. Strictly manage. D. Seriously damage.
9. According to the passage, which would the author agree with
A. Light pollution was first studied as a global issue in 2016.
B. Deep-sea environment can help animals avoid light pollution.
C Artificial light affects the sense of direction and habits of animals.
D. LEDs can be used more because of low cost and energy efficiency.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards the control of light pollution
A. Unconcerned. B. Negative.
C. Neutral. D. Positive.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To call on people to reduce light pollution.
B. To discuss fors and againsts of artificial light.
C. To give suggestions to protect environment.
D. To show development prospect of artificial light.
D 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第三段划线短语下文“It interrupts sleep and confuses the circadian rhythm(生理节奏)一the internal, twenty-four-hour clock that guides day and night activities and affects physiological processes in nearly all living organisms.
根据第四段中“Studies show that light pollution is also impacting animal behaviors, such as migration (迁徙)patterns and habitat formation. Because of light pollution, sea turtles guided by moonlight during migration get confused, lose their way, and often die. (研究表明,光污染也影响动物的行为,如迁徙模式和栖息地的形成。由于光污染,在月光引导下的海龟在迁徙过程中容易迷路,甚至死亡。)”可知,人造光影响动物的方向感和习性。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The good news is that light pollution, unlike many other forms of pollution, is reversible(可逆的)and each one of us can make a difference! (好消息是,光污染,不像其他形式的污染,是可逆的,我们每个人都可以做出改变!)”可知,光污染是可逆的,每个人都可以做出改变,由此可推知,作者对光污染控制的态度是积极乐观的,故选D。
11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Light pollution, the extreme or inappropriate use of outdoor artificial light, is affecting human health and wildlife behavior. There is a global movement to reduce light pollution, and everyone can help.(光污染,极端或不适当的使用户外人工光,正在影响人类健康和野生动物的行为。有一个减少光污染的全球运动,每个人都可以帮忙。)”可知,文章主要介绍了人造光对人类和动物的危害,呼吁我们要行动起来,减少光污染,所以文章的写作目的是呼吁人们减少光污染。故选A。

On January 15, 2009, the crew of US Airways Flight 1549 experienced a never-in-a-lifetime event. Less than two minutes after takeoff, some birds found their way into the airplane’s two engines and brought them to a sudden stop. Over the next three and a half minutes, the crew managed to identify the problem, decide what to do about it, and make the most successful emergency landing in aviation (航空) history.
We all experience similar moments. Running into the person you canceled a date with – while you’re on another date. Realizing you hit “reply all” on an e-mail that you’d do anything to have back. Earthquakes, medical emergencies – whatever the situation, the first thing you probably do is panic. Everybody does. While many of us think that we’re cool in a crisis, science tells us that we seldom are. At the moment we need to be keenly aware of our surroundings, but our attention goes to the scariest thing on the scene, leaving us unaware of the other sights, sounds, and even smells around us. At the moment, we’re anything but at our best.
These normal human reactions can be reversed. For example, firefighters are taught how to bring down their blood pressure and heart rates quickly, Box breathing, belly breathing, hum breathing – you can learn these techniques in minutes. Once you calm down, you’ll identify accurately what the problem is really about. Lack of practice always causes us to judge problems in wrong ways. Doing the thinking ahead of time also helps you fire off the solution when it’s show time. This is why you are advised to find the closest exit before the flight. And sometimes we aren’t prepared with all the knowledge we need. Let’s say we’re on a hike and a bear shows up. What shall we do Better to read suggestions on how to respond before heading into the wild.
Performing in a crisis is becoming more important for all of us for two reasons. Back in the good old days, the reliability of most anything we used or did was far less than it is today. Now think about what happens to our preparedness as the likelihood of something had happening reduces. Unless we practice what hardly ever happens, our ability to respond when it does happen tends to slip away. Reliability can kill you. Also, the systems we use today are more complex. There are seldom moving parts in plain view that allow us to see when things are about to go wrong. Consequently, terrible situations can “come out of nowhere”. Ironically, the systems that were designed to lessen our workload might require us to remain in a state of increased vigilance (警觉) in order to survive these increasingly infrequent events when they do happen.
As technology becomes part of most everything, and as once-large risks break into countless small ones, crisis situations may become standard affairs. We should all learn to breathe, recognize the situation, and carry out the plan that we are smart enough to prepare well in advance.
12. According to the passage, when an armed robbery (抢劫) happens, most witnesses will first ______.
A. observe the surroundings
B. pretend to be calm
C. decide what to do
D. focus on the gun
13. What does the underlined word “reversed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Tested.
B. Changed.
C. Predicted.
D. Understood.
14. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______.
A. things are less dependable than they used to be
B. cautiousness helps prevent the occurrence of crisis
C. convenience reduces our problem-solving capability
D. the complexity of present systems ensures our safety
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To introduce ways of avoiding crisis situations.
B. To point out the connection between stress and risks.
C. To raise awareness of the preparation for emergencies.
D. To analyse the influence of technology on crisis management.
D 13. B 14. C 15. C
由第二段倒数第二句话“At the moment we need to be keenly aware of our surroundings, but our attention goes to the scariest thing on the scene, leaving us unaware of the other sights, sounds, and even smells around us.”
由第二段以及第三段的第一句话“These normal human reactions can be reversed.”
由第四段“Unless we practice what hardly ever happens, our ability to respond when it does happen tends to slip away. Reliability can kill you. Also, the systems we use today are more complex. There are seldom moving parts in plain view that allow us to see when things are about to go wrong.”

根据上文“Physical activities are great ways to reduce anxiety(体育活动是减少焦虑好方法)”推知,设空处应该在说体育活动的好处,D项Physical activities release endorphins that will make you happy(体育活动会释放内啡肽,让你快乐)切题。故选D。
根据上文“Sleep deprivation is another cause of anxiety. Stay committed to getting a full 8 hours of sleep or more every night.(睡眠不足是焦虑的另一个原因。保证每晚睡足8小时或更长时间)”可知,要保证睡眠时间。承接上文,G项This will ensure your brain has been properly rested and you can start studying with a fresh mind(这将确保你的大脑得到适当的休息,你可以以一种清新的心态开始学习)切题,G项中的this指代上文内容。故选G。

C. To learn about the author's teaching. D. To help solve technical problems.
6. What does the author teach in class
A. Survival skills. B. Soft skills. C. Game design. D. Book knowledge.
7. What can we infer about the teaching expert
A. He has a great impact on the author's career.
B. He attaches importance to sharing knowledge.
C. He points out the leading role of the computer.
D. He shares the same teaching idea with the author.

Most environmental pollution comes from humans and their inventions. The electric bulbs are thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time. However too much of a good thing has started to negatively impact the environment.

On January 15 2009, the crew of US Airways Flight 1549 experienced a never-in-a-lifetime event.

A. Tested.
B. Changed.
C. Predicted.
D. Understood.
14. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______.
A. things are less dependable than they used to be
B. cautiousness helps prevent the occurrence of crisis
C. convenience reduces our problem-solving capability
D. the complexity of present systems ensures our safety
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To introduce ways of avoiding crisis situations.
B. To point out the connection between stress and risks.
