I was studying to become a firefighter, who are constantly thinking of other people and trying to help children. It’s the mindset, that is the most difficult part in this job!
One night I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (玉米饼) dining hall. I was approached by a homeless man. He asked me for some change to buy a little food.
As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea. I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner. When he followed me in, the people selling the burrito refused to let him in. After some arguing, so I had to encourage him to order whatever he wanted. He ended up ordering enough to fill his stomach at least 3 times over!
It seemed like he was very surprised at my kind behavior. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. To me it reminded me when I was young and my mom brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, getting to experience a big meal. And I think he felt special, like he was getting attention.
I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding.

A. To think back to his own birthday at a young age.

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an important role in the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and Asian Para Games. These terms might sound familiar, but how smart are they when applied to the 56 Asian Games venues (场地)
Their smartness can be found in running the venues with less human labor forces. At the Huanglong Sports Center, a system called Smart Stadium Brain is built. A 25 square meter high definition screen lays in the venue’s information center, which guarantees a friendly environment for the athletes and audiences. A small screen on each seat is designed to be at the audience’s service. By finger touching, the audience can control it conveniently to watch and keep contact with the event. What’s more, supported by the 5 G technology.
AI also means further protection on environment. At the Fuyang sports Center, although it has been raining for days, the roof of the venue still remains dry. And the secret lies in its attractive sky garden. The garden, is not only eye-catching but also useful. It allows the greening rate of the entire stadium to reach as high as 45%, being energy-saving. If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages increases grey matter density This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise trains muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.
A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London (UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals(双语)” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible.” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learnt English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension(理解)were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
12. Why does the writer mention “exercise” in the second paragraph
A. To make people believe language learning is helpful for their health.
B. To suggest language learning is also a kind of physical labor.
C. To prove that one needs more resources when he/she is learning a language.
D. To tell us that learning a language can train your brain effectively.
13. What can we know from the scientific findings
A. The ability of learning a second language is changing all the time.
B. The earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is.
C. The experience of learning a second language has a bad effect on brain.
D. There is no difference between a later second language learner and one without a second language.
14. In the last two paragraphs, the author tries to tell us that .
A. Learning of a second language helps in studying other subjects
B. Learning a second language is the same as studying maths
C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D. You’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language
15. What is mainly talked about in this passage
A. Language learning is closely connected with maths study.
B. Man has a great ability of learning a second language.
C. Studying a foreign language can improve man’s ability to think.
D. The study done by the researchers from UCL is failed finally.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C

Callie was a high school student. Because of her parents’ business, her family moved from London to Los Angeles, where she grew up.
Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was very interested in various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.
On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street ” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden, “she explained.” We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday. “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday. I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have had a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s close friend Tamara was waiting for her by their classroom, who had a surprise for her. Tamara said, “My mom bought tickets to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the amusement park (游乐场) to reopen.
Callie sighed and worried over how to choose for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood (情绪) when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school ” her mother asked.
Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mom ” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also want to help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choice, and you need to make your own decision. But I know you will do what is best,” her mother answered.

Paragraph 2:
On Saturday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot and behind Mrs. Baker stood Tamara.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Callie spent the evening thinking about her decision. There was no doubt that going to Fun World would be interesting, but on second thoughts, helping clean up the lot should be more meaningful, because people in the community could be provided with a better environment. The next day at school, Callie apologised to Tamara for her not being able to go to the amusement park, which got Tamara down. Tamara thought Callie didn’t attach too much importance to their friendship.
Paragraph 2:
On Saturday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot and behind Mrs. Baker stood Tamara. “Hi, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “Your mother said you made a difficult choice, and thank you and your friend for helping us today.” “You’re welcome,” Callie said. Tamara smiled at Callie and said, “Knowing you made a promise that you would come to help clean up the lot, I am willing to do it with you. My mom said she would take us to Fun World next weekend.” Callie smiled and hugged Tamara, with tears running down her cheeks (with复合结构).
