Five-year-old Willard Wigan struggled to tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9. Unfortunately, his schoolteacher knew nothing about dyslexia (阅读障碍症), a learning disability that can make letters and numbers confusing. She didn’t try to help him. Not surprisingly, Willard didn’t like school. Usually, his mind drifted — to playing outside, to his dog Maxie, or to the ants that lived near his family’s garden shed. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them — small and insignificant. Thus, when he noticed some ants trying to build a house, he decided to help them! Willard constructed a little building. Then he sprinkled sugar inside to encourage the ants to move in. When they did, Willard built more houses.
At school, Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special. Maybe he wasn’t a failure after all. If he had trouble with his reading or math, Willard would later go home and create tiny furniture for the ant houses. He even built an ant school, with teeny swings, ladders, seesaws, and a merry-go-round. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow in his heart.
At age nine, Willard began carving faces on toothpicks. He discovered that his ability improved when he held his breath as he worked. When he quit school at age 15 to help support his family, Willard still spent his spare time carving. His confidence grew as more people appreciated his talent. Eventually, he quit his factory job to pursue his dream of becoming one of the best artists in the world. Now, years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a period at the end of a sentence.
Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says, “Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about chasing and achieving your dreams.”
Willard Wigan, a microsculptor, has done just that. The man who felt small as a boy has shown the world that something small can really be big.
24. Which of the following best describes Willard’s teacher
A. Unsympathetic. B. Unhelpful. C. Impatient. D. Careless.
25. Why did Willard become interested in building homes for ants
A. Because he had a love for little things.
B. Because he was absent-minded in class.
C. Because he wouldn’t have to struggle at school.
D. Because he thought they both seemed unimportant.
26. What can we infer from the text
A. Willard gave up his study in school to pursue his dream.
B. Willard became popular when more people appreciated his work.
C. Willard was able to carve small artwork in a short period of time.
D. Willard found a way to make better artwork when he was at school.
27. Which of the following may Willard agree with
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. Success belongs to those who don’t give up.
C. Dreaming big is the first step in achieving your goals.
D. Talent is sometimes more important for success than hard work.
B 25. D 26. D 27. B
根据第一段的“Unfortunately, his schoolteacher knew nothing about dyslexia (阅读障碍症), a learning disability that can make letters and numbers confusing. She didn’t try to help him.(不幸的是,他的老师对阅读障碍一无所知,这是一种会使字母和数字混淆的学习障碍。她没有试图帮助他)”可知,Willard的老师帮不上他忙,可以用unhelpful来描述。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段的“Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them — small and insignificant.(Willard对那些蚂蚁特别好奇。他觉得自己和它们一样——渺小而微不足道)”可知,Willard对给蚂蚁建房子感兴趣是因为他觉得他和蚂蚁一样,都不重要。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“At school, Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special. Maybe he wasn’t a failure after all. If he had trouble with his reading or math, Willard would later go home and create tiny furniture for the ant houses. He even built an ant school, with teeny swings, ladders, seesaws, and a merry-go-round. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow in his heart.(在学校里,威拉德仍然很挣扎,但现在他知道他可以做一些特别的事情。也许他根本就不是个失败者。如果威拉德在阅读或数学方面有困难,他就会回家为蚂蚁屋制作小家具。他甚至建了一个蚂蚁学校,里面有小秋千、梯子、跷跷板和旋转木马。他的艺术技巧提高了,对小事物的热爱开始在他心中滋长)”可推知,Willard在上学的时候发现了一种制作更好艺术品的方法。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“But he says, “Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about persevering and achieving your dreams.”(但他说:“成功不是物质上的东西,比如一块昂贵的手表或一枚昂贵的戒指;这是关于坚持和实现你的梦想。”)”
C
In the animal kingdom, mimics (模仿) are not rare. Stick insects pretend to be twigs. Hawk moth caterpillars resemble poisonous snakes. The examples, though, are visual. Auditory mimicry is rarer. Danilo Russo of the University of Naples Federico II thinks he has found a novel case of it, as he describes in Current Biology. Some bats, he believes, mimic angry bees in order to scare away owls that might otherwise eat them.
Dr. Russo first noticed bat buzzing a few years ago. The noise struck him as similar to the sound of some bees. He wondered whether bat buzzing was a form of mimicry which helped to scare off would-be predators.
To test this idea, he and his colleagues first recorded the buzzing that captured bats made. Then, with protective clothing, they began the more dangerous task of recording the buzzing made by different puter analysis revealed that bees’ and bats’ buzzing were, indeed, similar.
Then the researchers recruited several owls. They put the owls, one at a time, in an enclosure with branches for them to stay on, and two boxes with holes in them. They placed a loudspeaker alongside one of the boxes and, after the birds had settled in, broadcast through it five seconds of uninterrupted bat buzzing and a similar amount of insect buzzing three times in a row for each noise. As a control, they broadcast in like manner several non-buzzing sounds made by bats.
During the broadcasts and for five minutes thereafter, they videoed the owls. After analysis, the results were unequivocal. When they heard both the bat buzzing and the bee buzzing, the owls moved as far from the speakers as they could. In contrast, when the non-buzzing bat sounds were played, they crept closer.
Dr. Russo believes this is the first reported case of a mammal using auditory mimicry to scare away a predator. They strongly suspect, however, that it is not unique. Anecdotes suggest several birds also make buzzing noises when their nests are disturbed. And with the result of the experiment, he therefore predicts that auditory mimicry is far more widespread than currently realized.
28. What was Dr. Russo’s assumption of the study
A. Only some bats have the capacity of auditory mimicry.
B. The buzzing of bats is similar to the sound of some bees.
C. Auditory mimicry is rather common in the animal kingdom.
D. Bats imitate the voice of angry bees to frighten away enemies.
29. How did Dr. Russo test his idea
A. By collecting computer data.
B. By consulting experts in this field.
C. By referring to other scholars’ analysis.
D. By conducting series of scientific experiments.
30. What does the underlined word “unequivocal” in paragraph 5 possibly mean
A. Disappointing. B. Controversial. C. Definite. D. Uncertain.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Animal Mimicry: Buzz off
B. Bats: No More Victim to Owls
C. A Self-protection Behavior among Animals
D. A New Trick to Scare Away Owls
D 29. D 30. C 31. A
Russo first noticed bat buzzing a few years ago. The noise struck him as similar to the sound of some bees. He wondered whether bat buzzing was a form of mimicry which helped to scare off would-be predators. (Russo 博士几年前第一次注意到蝙蝠的嗡嗡声。他听到的声音好像是蜜蜂的叫声。他想知道蝙蝠的嗡嗡声是否是一种模仿形式,有助于吓跑潜在的捕食者。)”可知,Russo博士对这项研究的假设是蝙蝠模仿愤怒的蜜蜂的声音来吓跑敌人。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“To test this idea, he and his colleagues first recorded the buzzing that captured bats made. Then, with protective clothing, they began the more dangerous task of recording the buzzing made by different puter analysis revealed that bees’ and bats’ buzzing were, indeed, similar. (为了验证这个想法,他和他的同事首先记录了捕获蝙蝠时发出的嗡嗡声。然后,穿上防护服,他们开始了更危险的任务: 记录不同蜜蜂发出的嗡嗡声。计算机分析显示,蜜蜂和蝙蝠的嗡嗡声确实相似。)”以及第四段和第五段内容可知,Russo是通过进行一系列的科学实验验证他的想法的。故选D项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中划线词句后文“When they heard both the bat buzzing and the bee buzzing, the owls moved as far from the speakers as they could. In contrast, when the non-buzzing bat sounds were played, they crept closer. (当他们同时听到蝙蝠和蜜蜂的嗡嗡声时,猫头鹰们尽可能地远离扬声器。相比之下,当播放没有嗡嗡声的蝙蝠声时,它们会慢慢靠近。)”等内容可知,实验的结果肯定了Russo的假设。从而推知划线词句“After analysis, the results were unequivocal. (经过分析,结果是unequivocal。)”其中划线词汇意思是“肯定的”。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段中“Some bats, he believes, mimic angry bees in order to scare away owls that might otherwise eat them. (他认为,有些蝙蝠会模仿愤怒蜜蜂,以吓跑可能会吃掉它们的猫头鹰。)”以及最后一段中“And with the result of the experiment, he therefore predicts that auditory mimicry is far more widespread than currently realized. (根据实验结果,他因此预测听觉模仿比目前认识到的要广泛得多。)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项研究,研究发现一些动物会模仿其他动物的声音,吓跑潜在的敌人。A项“动物模仿:(敌人)滚开”符合主题,故选A项。
D
Lithium (锂) is called “white gold” for good reason. The metal’s value has been growing sharply over the last several years, in a large part because it is an essential part of batteries as well as several key sustainable technologies where energy storage is of huge significance. As electric cars, wind and solar power have grown into major players in the energy industry, lithium has become key to engineering a future free of fossil (化石) fuels.
But acquiring lithium comes at an enormous cost. It often works like this: Water containing lithium is delivered to the surface from underground and mixed with fresh water. The mixture then sits in pools to get rid of water, leaving the rest of its contents behind as brightly colored “mud”. Then heat and chemical reactions are used to get lithium from that, changing it into powder which is then packaged and shipped to buyers around the world.
Any accident that releases mine contents into surrounding communities or the groundwater supply could have unimaginable long-term impacts. To be specific, indigenous (土著的) communities often bear the damage, and political leaders have typically given little weight to their concerns. In Arizona, for example, an expanding lithium mine is threatening the Hualapai Tribe’s cultural and historic sites. Recently, mining lithium and other precious metals has brought about conflict: How do you ensure the availability of materials essential to the future of renewables while protecting those communities’ rights
Mining of the metal is expected to increase dramatically in coming years. Over time, experts say, that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions (排放) by making electric cars more affordable and, therefore, more popular. As environmentally conscious consumers buy electric cars in ever-greater numbers, it’s important to be aware of the dirty process that powers those clean air vehicles.
32. What does the author’s intention of writing Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the background of an event. B. To explain a complex industrial theory.
C. To describe a noticeable recent tendency. D. To predict the future of a main technology.
33. Which may cause enormous environmental damage
A. Unexpected material leak. B. Violent chemical reactions.
C. Wrong political decisions. D. Lithium mine expansion.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards mining lithium
A. Intolerant. B. Uncaring. C. Favorable. D. Objective.
35. What’s the most suitable title for the text
A. High Expense of Lithium Mining B. Potential Benefit of Using Lithium
C. Hidden Threat behind Clean Energy D. Bright Future of Renewable Resources
C 33. A 34. D 35. C
根据第一段内容“Lithium (锂) is called “white gold” for good reason. The metal’s value has been growing sharply over the last several years, in a large part because it is an essential part of batteries as well as several key sustainable technologies where energy storage is of huge significance. As electric cars, wind and solar power have grown into major players in the energy industry, lithium has become key to engineering a future free of fossil
根据第三段中“Any accident that releases mine contents into surrounding communities or the groundwater supply could have unimaginable long-term impacts.(任何将矿物释放到周围社区或地下水供应的事故都可能造成难以想象的长期影响。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中“But acquiring lithium comes at an enormous cost.(但获取锂需要付出巨大的代价。)”和第三段中“Any accident that releases mine contents into surrounding communities or the groundwater supply could have unimaginable long-term impacts.(任何将矿物释放到周围社区或地下水供应的事故都可能造成难以想象的长期影响。)” 再结合第三段中“Recently, mining lithium and other precious metals has brought about conflict: How do you ensure the availability of materials essential to the future of renewables while protecting those communities’ rights (最近,锂和其他贵金属的开采带来了冲突:在保护这些社区权利的同时,如何确保对可再生能源未来至关重要的材料的可用性?)”
根据最后一段中“As environmentally conscious consumers buy electric cars in ever-greater numbers, it’s important to be aware of the dirty process that powers those clean air vehicles.(随着越来越多具有环保意识的消费者购买电动汽车,有必要意识到驱动这些清洁空气的汽车的肮脏过程。)”

At school Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special.

A. Unexpected material leak. B. Violent chemical reactions.
C. Wrong political decisions. D. Lithium mine expansion.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards mining lithium
A. Intolerant. B. Uncaring. C. Favorable. D. Objective.
35. What’s the most suitable title for the text
A. High Expense of Lithium Mining B. Potential Benefit of Using Lithium
