Fifteen years ago, Claybourne Elder was a twenty something from Utah, standing in the back of a Broadway theater watching “Putnam County Spelling Bee”, when an act of kindness opened a door to new possibilities.
“This man came up to me and said, ‘Hey, are you from out of town ’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m just here visiting.’ And the man handed me $200 and said, ‘You looked like you were having more fun than the people in the expensive seats. Go buy yourself a ticket to ‘Sweeney Todd’ tomorrow. It’ll change your life’,” Elder said. Elder never got the man’s name—just $200 and a photo.
Elder had never seen “Sweeney Todd”, so he bought “a great seat”. Starring in that production was the legendary Patti LuPone. “That did not seem real. Patti LuPone...she seemed like a person you read about in a book or heard about somewhere, but not someone you saw perform,” Elder said.
He then tried his best to earn a place on the stage. LuPone is now his co-star in the hit musical “Company”—a turning point of fate(命运) that goes back to the stranger who gave him the means to watch one of Broadway’s biggest productions. “It takes that kind of generosity to show you what generosity can be, to turn around and do it again,” Elder said.
Giving back is now a big part of his life. Once a month, he and his 4-year-old son pay for a stranger’s meal at their local diner. Recently, he has started giving away free tickets to his show through social media.
After every performance, Elder takes a picture with the strangers he buys tickets for and hangs the photos in his dressing room. “I hope that it awakens(唤醒) something in them, just like it did in me,” he said. “What I hope happens is that these people are shown some sort of sincere kindness from a stranger and hopefully in turn go out and do something kind for somebody who they don’t know.”
24. How did Elder feel when he saw Patti LuPoneper form
A. Moved and grateful. B. Inspired but worried.
C. Curious but doubtful. D. Surprised and excited.
25. What did Elder do after seeing “Sweeney Todd”
A. He learned from Patti LuPone.
B. He tried to contact the stranger.
C. He trained hard to become an actor.
D. He created “Company” with Patti LuPone.

A. To get personal popularity. B. To take photos with them.
C. To inspire them to do good. D. To help them know more about his show.

Biscayne is not very far from the lights, noise and excitement of downtown Miami. But it has a very different atmosphere from the big city. Biscayne National Park was established as a national monument in 1968. It became a national park in 1980. That year, its size also increased. The park now covers more than 70, 000 hectares.
If you enjoy water, Biscayne is the park for you. Ninety-five percent of the park is water. Many kinds of animals live in these waters. Some of them are threatened or endangered. You will find the huge, gentle West Indian manatee(海牛),the less gentle American crocodile, several kinds of sea turtles, and more than 500 species of fish.
Scientists say human history at Biscayne begins more than 10, 000 years ago. However, evidence of the area’s earliest people is mostly underwater now, as water levels have risen over time. Within the last 3, 000 years, people began to settle in the area. Scientists continue to learn about these people by examining the big hills of shells they left behind. The shells contain other waste, too, including early tools and housewares.
European explorers began ariving in the area in the early 1500s. They brought with them diseases like smallpox and measles(天花和麻疹). Over time, these diseases killed huge numbers of natives. Early explorers arrived in the area on ships. The reefs and rough waters made it difficult for ship captains. Biscayne’s waters contain more than 50 shipwrecks. Scuba divers today can explore six of them.
Four ecosystems come together here, which is what makes the park so diverse. The blending ecosystems create “edge communities“. These edge communities support a huge amount of wildlife.
The underwater diversity is what attracts most people to Biscayne National Park. Many visitors come here to scuba dive in Biscayne National Park in 1980.

30. What does “edge communities” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to
A. The place where the natives live. B. The place where Europeans first arrived.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes their hearts and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases the risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers said the study was the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin(毁坏) us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regular from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
32. What does the underlined part “that train has left the station”mean in Paragraph 2
A. The train has changed its course.
B. Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.
C. The Internet brings great changes to people’s life.
D. The Internet has improved people’s life.
33. What can we know about the study according to Paragraph 4
A. There was no similar study like it before.
B. Most of the young people had high blood pressure.
C. Adult people aged above 17 took part in the study.
D. Over half of the teens in the study were heavy Internet users.
34. Which of the following would Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow probably agree with
A. That teenagers shouldn’t use the Internet.
B. That the Internet will ruin human life in the future.
C. That smartphones are more harmful than computers.
D. That regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. Every coin has two sides—so does the Internet.
C. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D. How to prevent teenagers from using the Internet.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better.
Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to' the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Jane had to stay alone in the forest for another cold night. At that moment, she felt a little sad, but she wasn’t so frightened. She reminded herself constantly, “Tom must have called for those helicopters. Maybe he was in one of them and will return soon! I have to guide him tomorrow.” She fell asleep and dreamed of seeing Tom.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She ate some berries and then walked along the stream, hoping to find a suitable place to guide the helicopter. She walked and walked, exhausted but full of hope. Suddenly, she spotted a huge flat rock. She managed to climb onto it and waited with patience. The helicopter appeared again. The nearer it got, the more she waved the yellow blouse. To her great joy, the helicopter didn’t miss Jane this time and it landed near the big rock slowly. Tom jumped off the helicopter and rushed towards Jane. They hugged each other tightly and burst into tears.
