【原文】
M: OK, are you all settled Well, first of all, welcome to Cardiff University. I’m here to explain what we can offer you.
Now, as a new student at the university, you will probably need some sort of guidance to help you to use the library effectively to study and research. Some of you have asked about a guided tour but we find this rather confuses people. So, in this first week, we run a series of talks which focus on different aspects of the library and its resources.
OK, now let me give you an outline of what’s available to you. You’ll find that the computers are increasingly used as a research tool. Many students do most of their research on the Internet and the library computers are permanently online. Having found what you need, you’ll find you can readily save texts on your personal computer space to print off when you need.
Naturally we do still have the full range of classic reference books for you to use and there are several copies of each one. This is because some of you may prefer to borrow a book rather than sit in the library. There is a restricted loan time on these so that they are not missing from the shelves for too long. Although there is a Section Manager for each part of the library, they are very busy and so, if you do get stuck looking for things, you should ask the relevant Cataloguing Assistant. As your Training Supervisor, I just oversee your work for a week and will not be around after this initial week.

第三部分 写作
第一节 应用文
One possible version:
Dear Jim,
I am very glad to hear from you and delighted to know that you are interested in Chinese food.
During the Spring Festival, it's a tradition for family to get together and have a big meal. However, the food customs vary from place to place. In the north of China, dumplings are the typical food, which represent change and good luck. In contrast, in the southern part, it's a great time to eat tangyuan. They are sticky rice balls with different fillings. Tangyuan sounds like “tuanyuan” in Chinese, which means “family reunion”. When you come to Beijing, Beijing Roast Duck is what you can't miss. I bet it will be an unforgettable experience for you.
Looking forward to meeting you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
By the end of the day, it was obvious that I wasn't very comfortable about the job. “You don't have to help me,” my grandmother said. “I understand that the job isn't what you want to do.” I swallowed hard, thinking of money. Did I want to be comfortable, or did I want the money “No, Grandma. It's okay. I'll get used to it.” But I was not convinced of my words. “If you're sure, dear...” A moment of silence settled over the car before she spoke again. “For a lot of the people we deliver to... this is their only meal of the day.”
Paragraph 2:
My eyes widened, and I turned to her, “Their only meal ” She nodded seriously. “For some of them we're the only people they see. Many of them are alone.” I thought about that. I couldn't imagine not having my mom, my grandmother or my friends. When we were back at the house, my grandmother handed me the money I'd earned. It didn't seem quite exciting anymore. I'd like to say that I did something incredible with the money I earned. What matters is that those people with smiles sinking in their wrinkled faces brought unexpected joy to my life while I brought them only a simple gift.昆八中2023-2024学年高二上学期12月月考

William Blake at Tate Britain
The largest William Blake exhibition in 20 years comes to Tate Britain this autumn, celebrating the work of a singular artistic talent. Blake's ill-fated exhibition of 1809 held above his family's shop in Soho, meant that he never received public praise in his time. Tate Britain hopes to change this, by exhibition over300 original watercolors, paintings and prints as well as recreating the tiny domestic room in which Blake created most of his works.

A nine-year-old Indian girl Meaidaibahun Majaw said she came up with a way to solve the problem after it started to trouble her. “I experienced bullying(欺凌) in school since I was young. The app, which would soon be available on Google Play, allows victims to report their bullies to teachers, parents, and friends secretly. “Users can provide details of the incidents, including the name of the bully, and send the messages to people concerned. This allows the authorities to take necessary actions.” Majaw explained.

In the UK we often equate life experience, especially among younger generations, with the number of stamps in your passport. Travel is not simply a pursuit of leisure but also “character-building”, “defining” and potentially, “career-boosting”.
Most of the people I know here at university experience that same itch to get in a plane, train, bus or car and escape the hectic stress of deadlines and seminars that usually surrounds us. But I don't think, as UK student, we can blame our addiction to international travel simply on a stressful life. Yes, I have a lot to handle and it's a fine balancing act managing my part-time job, my degree and my social life to a perfect level. But really I. think we are the first generation in a truly open world, where we can get anywhere, see anything and experience every culture under the sun, at the click of a button, the purchase of a ticket.
Many people I met while working in China were surprised at the number of countries I'd travelled to, which came as a pared to friends and family I consider myself vastly under-travelled. I've yet to even set foot across the pond in the U. S. A and Canada. let alone South America and even within Europe, my checklist of destinations is far from complete. But more eye opening for me, I was also met by astonishment at how little geographical traversing I had done within my own borders. This was something I had not really considered before and as I left Beijing I felt an overwhelming appreciation not just for the rich culture of China but also for the diverse localities within the UK. How much of my own country had I really seen and experienced To those from a place as vast and varied as China, Britain was really so small in comparison and so to have spent 20 years there and not seen every no ok and cranny of it was quite surprising.
I spent a while engaged in a convention with a Chinese colleague over the difference in building style, in architecture from the Highlands of Scotland to the Cornish const. Now for most people this sounds dreary and dull, and I guess I am biased as a student of history who finds anything remotely historical fascinating. However it was not the geological variety of stone within British cities I found interesting. We continued our discussion, yet I was left embarrassed that I could not provide a concrete answer to her question. In China, as well as a wealth of new culture that fascinated me, I discovered that there were parts of the UK's culture, history, the very structure of my identity that were so different, so unique from China that I also gained a new found interest in my own heritage.
In this respect, travelling enables you with two things. Firstly, you develop an overwhelming fascination with new cultures, understanding customs, experiencing cuisines and absorbing the sights and smells of every new city. For many employers this adaptability to new locations is seen as a tremendous asset to your personal resume. But alongside increased employ ability, through international, cross-cultural conversations, you develop an interest in your own history, culture, and customs. You return to your home filled with an understanding of other people's
fascination with it and imbued with your own sense of love for its peculiarities.

Beijing is no stranger to Western food. American restaurants like McDonald's and KFC have brought more Western dishes to the local food scene in recent years. Now, two new restaurants have joined them.
In August, Tac o Bell and Shake Shack opened their doors to cager customers in Beijing. Taco Bell is a popular American fast food restaurant that features Mexican food. Hard- and soft-shell tacos are a staple(主食) on the menu; they are generally served with beef, lettuce and tomato. And of course there are burritos—chicken, beef or beans wrapped in a tortilla(墨西哥薄馅饼). However, there are new menu items that are special to the Beijing location, such as the Yang Berry Freeze and Avocado Oolong Tea.
Shake Shack, known for its traditional American-style hamburgers and milk shakes, is also serving up dishes that won't be found in branches outside of the capital. Harry Wang, who studied in the US, visited the restaurant soon after it opened. “The last time I had Shake Shack was more than a year ago when I was in the United States,” Wang said. “They are pretty similar to what we had in the United States, but there is a milkshake special to Beijing.”
The milkshake Wang referred to is the Hutong Hawthorn. The shake mixes hawthorn, a traditional Chinese snack, into a milkshake, a common ice cream drink in Western fast food. The Beijing Shake Shack also offers roasted chestnut ice cream.
Both restaurants also reflect elements of Chinese culture in their decorations. Shake Shack's windows feature cartoons showing hu tong life, and Taco Bell has a picture of a pa lace at the Temple of Heaven on one of its walls.
From the design to the menus, the two restaurants are “adding a touch of local flavor”, noted China news.

At eleven years old, my main concern was money. Where could I get it How much did I ne ed to buy the new must-have thing my classmates either had or wanted as badly as I did
I went to my mom. “Mom, I need more money,” I said, leaning against the kitchen count er while she cooked dinner .“You think you need a job ” Mom asked with a smile. The next day, she had an answer. “Your grandmother will pay you to help her deliver lunch each day to the elderly.” “Yes!” I pumped my fist into the air.
When my grandmother picked me up, I couldn't wait to start my new job. My grandmother said, “It's simple. We pick up a large container full of hot meals in a nearby town and then we go on our delivery route.” After dozens of meals were arranged in the backseat, my grandmother drove us to our first stop. The first house didn't look nice, but I shrugged and kept going. I didn't have to live there. I just delivered food there. This was how I would make money. I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the comer looking at me. She sat hunched(弓着背) in a rocking chair and had many wrinkles(皱纹).“Who is this nice young lady ” she asked Grandmother. I just stood there holding the food, unsure what to do. My grandmother guided me inside to place it on her kitchen table. The house smelled bad and it was old. It was like the antique store my mom liked to visit, but I never liked that because even breathing in the dusty air made me feel dirty. I held my breath until we went out.
The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape. Some were nicer than others, but the same wrinkly people waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked me as I hurried to get out of there. I was sweaty and tired, and my clothes had smelt of the food and old houses.

Paragraph 1:
By the end of the day, it was obvious that I wasn't very comfortable about the job.
