Thailand’s “loneliest tree”, a tree growing on a rock y island only a few meters in diameter, is being seriously threatened by tourists desperate to get a selfie (自拍) with it.
The small pa tch of land located just off the country’s eastern coast in Trat Province has been called “Koh Khai Hua Roh” because it looks similar to the island featured in drawings of funny scenes involving a man and a woman trapped on an island in the popular Khai Hua Rob comic. The uninhabited island is quite a sight to behold, as it is home to a lonely tree that struggle to live despite being surrounded by salt water. Unfortunately, the tree’s popularity might just be the death of it.
On Tuesday, the Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization led a team of Thai reporters to Koh Khai Hua Roh in order to observe the country’s loneliest tree. They knew that photos of the lonely tree. shared on social media had been attracting an increasing number of tourists to the island, but they had no idea how much damage that could produce.
According to The Nation, several small branches of the tree were found broken off, the tree’s exposed roots appeared to have been stepped heavily on to the point where the outer cover has peeled off (剥落), and the trunk appears to be tilting (倾斜) more than it did a few years back.
Koh Khai Hua Roh island is so tiny that it can only accommodate up to five people at a time, but local authorities admit that selfie-addicted tourists sometimes crowd there in much greater numbers, with some even climbing the poor tree.
The Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization plans to kickstart an educational campaign to hopefully teach people to conserve iconic landmarks like Thailand’s loneliest tree. It also plans to take more drastic actions, like restricting the number of tourists allowed to visit the island and making the island only accessible in certain seasons.
24. The name of the island is related to ________.
A. a lonely tree B. a popular comic C. a controversial selfie D. a threatened tourist
25. What do we know about the loneliest tree according to The Nation
A. It is under protection. B. It proves inaccessible.
C. It has become less popular. D. It is in a really bad state.
26. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Ways to establish landmarks. B. Measures to advertise the island.
C. Responses to the damage from tourists. D. Actions to attract more tourists.
27. From which is this text most probably taken
A. A geography textbook. B. A news report. C. A health magazine. D. A travel guide.

Japan recently lowered its voting age from 20 to 18. This decision was in order to help young people feel more engaged in politics. But it may also signal the change of social views regarding the beginning of adulthood.
Adulthood has traditionally been defined by a combination of age and the achievement of social milestones. Most countries have a legally defined age to determine when a person becomes an adult— the age of majority. In Australia, most states consider a person to be an adult in court at 18. The age of 18 is also consistent with other adult privileges, such as the right to purchase alcohol and to marry. However, 17-year-olds can serve in the army and get a driver’s licence. The law defines adulthood on the basis of age and it also recognizes the process of becoming an adult as involving himself gradually in social responsibility. This legal approach to adulthood is mirrored in other countries, where there are differences between the age of majority and social responsibility given to young people.
Socially, determinants of adulthood traditionally focus on a person taking increasing responsibility for their lives in various pleting school, taking full-time employment, getting married and parenthood —these are all observable indicators to determine when a person is viewed as an adult.
Since the 1980s, however, people have achieved some of these observable milestones at later ages. Increased access to education has delayed young people leaving home and developing romantic relationships. Economic changes have also resulted in unstable employment markets and increases in costs of living, prompting many young people to remain at home and dependent on parents.
Due to these social changes, our expectations of young people and their level of social responsibility have also changed. The recognition of a new life stage — emerging (发展初期的) adulthood — has been recommended to account for the changes to social milestones that have traditionally represented adulthood.
28. What can we learn about adulthood from the text
A. People reach observable indicators much later.
B. Age alone is a reliable determinant of adulthood.
C. Participation in politics is a responsibility for adulthood.
D. Economic changes mainly shift people’s views on adulthood.
29. What right can people enjoy at the age of 17 in most states of Australia
A. Voting. B. Buying wines. C. Getting married. D. Driving legally.
30. What does the underlined word “prompting” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Encouraging. B. Advising. C. Forbidding. D. Persuading.
31. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Emerging adulthood reflects a new life stage.
B. Adulthood is defined differently in different places.
C. Social changes are challenging the idea of adulthood.
D. Adulthood is a combination of rights and responsibilities.
D
Goldfish may seem like simple creatures swimming in a glass tank, but they possess a rather complicated navigation system, as discovered by researchers at the University of Oxford. Led by Dr. Adelaid e Sibeaux, the study aims to shed light on our understanding of how fish, and potentially humans, estimate distances using what could be described as an internal GPS.
Writing in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Sibeaux and colleagues report how they created a tank in their experiment with 2cm-wide black and white vertical stripes (条纹) on the walls, connected by similar stripes across the floor. The team trained nine goldfish to swim a set distance of 70cm and then return to their starting point when waved at. The experiment aimed to investigate how the fish would estimate this distance without any gestures, under different patterns.
Over multiple trials, the goldfish averaged a swim distance of 74cm, give or take 17cm, when presented with the vertical 2cm-wide stripes. However, when the stripe pattern was altered to either narrower vertical stripes, checked patterns, or horizontal stripes, the fish’s behavior changed significantly. Narrower vertical stripes led them to overestimating the distance by 36%, while horizontal stripes resulted in highly inconsistent estimations.
According to the researchers, the goldfish appeared to be using an “optic (光学的) flow mechanism” based on the visual density of their environment. They kept track of how frequently the vertical pattern switched between black and white to estimate how far they had traveled. The study suggests that different optic flow mechanisms are used by mammals, including humans, based on angular (有角度的) motion of visual features. The study implies that the use of visually based distance information could have emerged early in the evolutionary timeline.
“This study is novel because, despite knowing that fish respond to geometric information regarding direction and distance, we don’t know how they estimate distances,” Professor Colin Lever, although not involved in the study, said, “it’s exciting to explore fish spatial mapping because fish navigation evolved earlier and better than most mammals.”
32. Why did Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux conduct the study on goldfish
A. To uncover how an inbuilt GPS helps goldfish estimate distances.
B. To create an advanced navigation system for humans.
C. To test the accuracy of goldfish’s internal GPS.
D. To explore the relationships between goldfish and humans.
33. What can we learn about the experiment
A. People gestured the goldfish throughout the experiment.
B. The tank was decorated with colorful background patterns.
C. Goldfish tended to underestimate distances with horizontal stripes.
D. The change in the tank setting led to the goldfish’s incorrect judgment.
34. It can be concluded from the fourth paragraph that ________.
A. optic flow mechanism is unique to humans
B. mammals developed flow mechanism long before goldfish
C. goldfish evaluated the distance with multidimensional visual information
D. visual density of the environment strengthened the locating ability of goldfish
35. What attitude does Professor Colin hold towards the study
A. Neutral. B. Ambiguous. C. Disapproving. D. Favorable.

Comfort foods are typically energy-dense, high-fat, and sweet, such as chocolate, ice cream and French fries. They provide pleasure or temporarily make us feel better. 36
There seems to be a consistent connection between negative emotions and unhealthy foods, a phenomenon called emotional eating. In a bad mood, people are drawn to unhealthy foods (sugary and fatty) as a coping mechanism. 37 . However, one study found that although comfort foods provide some relief from negative moods so do other foods or even eating no food at all.
The need to belong.
We tend to associate certain foods with members of our family, social gatherings and people taking care of us. So when we feel lonely we desire these foods to give us comfort and security. 38 . For example, for a college student away from home for the first time, comfort food s may serve as a reminder of family or friends in times of stress or isolation. Evidence showed that people with positive family relationships were more likely than others to reach for comforting foods on the days when they felt lonely.
Special occasion.
39 . The excuse reflect a dilemma. From a short-term perspective, the indulgence (纵情享受) is the best choice; but from a long-term perspective, healthy eating is the best choice. The ideal solution is to somehow do both. 40 . If the situation can be framed as the “last time”, then the dilemma disappears, since the person can say to himself that a new and better life will begin tomorrow.
A. This is impossible except in one situation
B. This is because we feel comforted when we are full
C. However, as it is ideal, it’s impossible for most people
D. Here are some factors that can contribute to comfort eating
E. In contrast, people in a positive mood tend to choose healthy foods
F. We tend to go for special, often unhealthy, foods on celebratory occasions
G. Namely, comfort food’s power may lie in the associations it calls to mind

At first, Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbor’s home. He and his wife were just having a dinner in their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they heard someone screaming: “The house is on fire!” He went to investigate. That’s when he saw two women and a girl crazily at a loss on their porch (走廊). It was his neighbor’s house.
“The baby’s inside there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, who always called him Uncle Surrell. She was the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell’s three youngest kids, 8, 10, and 12. The other two on the porch were Tiara’s aunt and cousin.
Entering the burning house was like running into “a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Surrell to walk blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible for him to breathe. He felt his throat and lungs burned, and every blink stung his eyes. The conditions would have been very dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病) and was in hospital just half a year ago, they were life - risking.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house searching but in vain, he ran outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara ” he asked desperately.
“The second floor.” her aunt shouted back.
Surrell knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. So he uttered a little prayer: “Well, God, this is it. You got to help me, because I’m not coming out without that little girl.”

Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. He ran blindly in the blackness, and finally made it to the second floor, where he was met by intense heat. “Tiara, where are you ” He cried desperately. All he could hear was the popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. He quickly crawled towards the sound. Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara towards him, scooped her into his arms and struggled to fight through the smoke and ran to the front door. The moment they got outside, he passed out. People around sent them to the hospital right away.
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. Having suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs, he spent another two weeks in the hospital. The fire worsened Surrell’s pulmonary condition. As a result, he took extra medication that helped open his airways. Tiara recovered soon and was released from the hospital after two days. She went to visit Surrell every day, talking with Surrell. “Thank you for saving my life, Uncle Surrell.” Tiara offered her heartfelt gratitude, tears filling her eyes. “It’s a small price to pay,” Surrell said, “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. 【23 题详解】数字计算题。根据第二个表格可知三张插图需要 80 美元,再结合最后一段 Entries must be
registered no later than Jan. 13, 2023.Entries registered after that date will be charged a fee of $ 10 each.(在此日期之后报名的作品将被收取 10 美元的费用。)
根据第二段中“The small patch of land located just off the country’s eastern coast in Trat Province has been called “Koh Khai Hua Roh” because it looks similar to the island featured in drawings of funny scenes involving a man and a woman trapped on an island in the popular Khai Hua Roh comic.(这片位于泰国东部海岸的小块土地被称为“Koh Khai Hua Roh”,因为它看起来很像广受欢迎的漫画《Khai Hua Roh》中一个男人和一个女人被困在岛上的有趣场景)”可知,这个岛的名字与广受欢迎的漫画《Khai Hua Roh》有关,故选B项。
根据第四段中“According to The Nation, several small branches of the tree were found broken off, the tree’s exposed roots appeared to have been stepped heavily on to the point where the outer cover has peeled off (剥落), and the trunk appears to be tilting (倾斜) more than it did a few years back.(据《国家》杂志报道,这棵树的几根小树枝被折断了,暴露在外的树根似乎被人重重地踩到了,以至于外层的覆盖物都剥落了,树干似乎比几年前倾斜得更厉害)”可知,据《国家》杂志报道,这棵树处于一个非常糟糕的状态,故选D项。
根据最后一段中“The Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization plans to kickstart an educational campaign to hopefully teach people to conserve iconic landmarks like Thailand’s loneliest tree. It also plans to take more drastic actions, like restricting the number of tourists allowed to visit the island and making the island only accessible in certain seasons.(Koh Mak Tambon行政组织计划启动一项教育活动,希望教会人们保护标志性建筑,比如泰国最孤独的树。它还计划采取更严厉的措施,比如限制游客人数,以及只在特定季节开放)”可推知,最后一段主要讲的是Koh Mak Tambon行政组织对于景点遭到游客破坏的应对措施,故选C项。
27.推理判断题。通读全文可知,结合第三段中“On Tuesday, the Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization led a team of Thai reporters to Koh Khai Hua Roh in order to observe the country’s loneliest tree.(周二,Koh Mak Tambon行政组织带领一个泰国记者团队来到Koh Khai Hua Roh,以观察该国最孤独的树)”可推知,本文报道了泰国东海岸的Koh Khai Hua Roh岛上一棵孤独的树受到了游客的追捧,但最近前去观察这棵树的泰国记者却发现它已经被涌入的游客严重损坏的新闻事件。
根据第一段“Japan recently lowered its voting age from 20 to 18. This decision was in order to help young people feel more engaged in politics. But it may also signal the change of social views regarding the beginning of adulthood.(日本最近将投票年龄从20岁降至18岁。这一决定是为了帮助年轻人更多地参与政治。但它也可能标志着关于成年期开始的社会观点的变化。)”和第二段“The law defines adulthood on the basis of age and it also recognizes the process of becoming an adult as involving himself gradually in social responsibility. (法律根据年龄对成年进行了定义,并承认成年过程是逐渐参与社会责任的过程)”可知,成年了需要参与社会责任,说明政治是成年人的责任,故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, 17-year-olds can serve in the army and get a driver’s licence.(然而,17岁的人可以在军队服役并获得驾驶执照。)”
根据第四段最后一句中的“Economic changes have also resulted in unstable employment markets and increases in costs of living(经济变化也导致就业市场不稳定和生活费用增加)”和“many young people to remain at home and dependent on parents(许多年轻人呆在家里依赖父母)”可知,此处是指糟糕的社会环境促使许多年轻人呆在家里依靠父母,所以prompting意为“促使”,故选A。
根据第一段最后一句“But it may also signal the change of social views regarding the beginning of adulthood.(但它也可能标志着关于成年期开始的社会观点的变化。)”和最后一段第一句“Due to these social changes, our expectations of young people and their level of social responsibility have also changed.(由于这些社会变化,我们对年轻人的期望和他们的社会责任水平也发生了变化。)”

根据第一段“Goldfish may seem like simple creatures swimming in a glass tank, but they possess a rather complicated navigation system, as discovered by researchers at the University of Oxford Led by Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux, the study aims to shed light on our understanding of how fish, and potentially humans, estimate distances using what could be described as an internal GPS.(金鱼可能看起来像在玻璃鱼缸里游泳的简单生物,但它们拥有相当复杂的导航系统,正如牛津大学Adelaide Sibeaux博士领导的研究人员所发现的那样,这项研究旨在阐明我们对鱼类以及潜在的人类如何利用一种可以被称为内部GPS的东西来估计距离的理解)”可知,Adelaide Sibeaux对金鱼进行这项研究是为了揭示内置GPS如何帮助计算距离。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Over multiple trials, the goldfish averaged a swim distance of 74cm, give or take 17cm, when presented with the vertical 2cm-wide stripes. However, when the stripe pattern was altered to either narrower vertical stripes, checked patterns, or horizontal stripes, the fish’s behavior changed significantly. Narrower vertical stripes led them to overestimating the distance by 36%, while horizontal stripes resulted in highly inconsistent estimations.(在多次试验中,当看到垂直的2厘米宽的条纹时,金鱼的平均游泳距离为74厘米,误差为17厘米。然而,当条纹图案被改变为较窄的垂直条纹、格子图案或水平条纹时,鱼的行为发生了显著变化。较窄的垂直条纹导致他们高估了36%的距离,而水平条纹导致高度不一致的估计)”可知,鱼缸设置的改变导致了金鱼的错误判断。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“According to the researchers, the goldfish appeared to be using an “optic (光学的) flow mechanism” based on the visual density of their environment. They kept track of how frequently the vertical pattern switched between black and white to estimate how far they had traveled. The study suggests that different optic flow mechanisms are used by mammals, including humans, based on angular (有角度的) motion of visual features. The study implies that the use of visually based distance information could have emerged early in the evolutionary timeline.(根据研究人员的说法,金鱼似乎使用了一种基于环境视觉密度的“光流机制”。他们记录了垂直图案在黑色和白色之间切换的频率,以估计它们走了多远。这项研究表明,包括人类在内的哺乳动物基于视觉特征的角度运动使用了不同的光流机制。这项研究表明,视觉距离信息的使用可能在进化的早期就出现了)”可知,本段可得出结论,金鱼使用多维视觉信息来评估距离。故选C项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段““This study is novel because, despite knowing that fish respond to geometric information regarding direction and distance, we don’t know how they estimate distances,” Professor Colin Lever, although not involved in the study, said, “it’s exciting to explore fish spatial mapping because fish navigation evolved earlier and better than most mammals.”(“这项研究是新颖的,因为尽管我们知道鱼类对方向和距离的几何信息有反应,但我们不知道它们是如何估计距离的,”科林·利弗教授说,尽管他没有参与这项研究,“探索鱼类的空间映射是令人兴奋的,因为鱼类的导航进化得比大多数哺乳动物更早,也更好。”)”

Text 10
The last few years have been difficult for our country's tourism industry. Not just here in Spain, but in the entire world. We missed an increase in our economy during Christmas and New Year's several months ago.And currently, we are not even close to our regular travel rates during the spring. That's why we're starting our travel program now to prepare ourselves for the summer months coming soon.
I've talked to many workers in tourism.Hotel owners, bar servers, tour guides, and all else in this industry have suffered. But now, most of the world is opening again for travel.Soon, not only do I expect tourism in our country to increase heavily, but I believe this will help our country to recover fully!
So,along with other top government leaders in my group,we plan to offer practical assistance for tourism businesses. We'll spend more money on advertising for Spanish tourism around Europe. And we are also considering increasing borrowing for businesses, which is the most important thing.Hopefully, companies can clean and fix their places while hiring staff before the summer tourist season. Before COVID-19,Spain was one of the world's most visited countries. With our plans,we'll return to this previous success!
