For thousands of years, people have been fascinated by dolphins. Dolphins have developed a number of similar personality qualities to humans’, such as curiosity and sociability, despite having developed in vastly different environments, researchers have found. Recently, a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the coast of Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The researchers found that these dolphins are more willing to walk with partners that like the same tool. Other parts, like family closeness or sex, have no impact on this relationship.
“It suggests that dolphins form social relationship based on shared interests,” UK biologist Simon said. Apart from dolphins, elephants, horses and bats are also known to form friendships. Are friendships only limited to the same species Of course not.
In 2015, a goat Timur was originally left in the tiger Amur’s enclosure (围场) as a meal. But instead of eating Timur, Amur likes to play with Timur. I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral (珊瑚). They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only one percent of Australia’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine (海洋的) life is particularly important because the reefs (暗礁) have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic (数据) is depressing so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.

What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.
The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning—what is called “wakeful rest”.
A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.
If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!
Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well”. It also says, “Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information.”
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.
Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it—a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
11. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The importance of sleep. B. The good ways to get a rest.
C. The reason for having a rest. D. The types of resting activities.
12 Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying
A. Reading a newspaper. B. Playing a video game.
C. Sitting there doing nothing. D. Having a nice sleep at night.
13. How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF
A. Less than 7 hours. B. Just 7 hours.
C. No more than 9 hours. D. Around 9 hours.
14. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Low-cost Tips on Working B. Good Things to Do After Your Study
C. Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep D. How Long Should We Rest After Learning
【答案】11. C 12. C 13. D 14. B

Easton retired(退休) as a school teacher, and he didn’t have enough savings. What’s worse, his wife, Cassandra, had heart disease that needed expensive treatment.
To save his wife’s life, Easton didn’t have a choice but to take up a job, and he found one as a pizza delivery(递送) man at Rooster’s Pizza. On his first day on the job, his co-workers judged him because the sight of an 84-year-old pizza delivery man was undoubtedly a rare one. But Easton didn’t care.
After delivering the first two orders that day, Easton was on his way to deliver the third one, when he realized his car was low on gas. He stopped at a gas station, worried he would be late for his next delivery. Determined to make it on time, Easton grabbed the steering wheel and drove as fast as he could. However, as he reached one of the main roads, a police car stopped him.
When Officer Jenkins and Officer Matthew walked up to Easton’s car, they were shocked to see an 84-year-old behind the wheel of a pizzeria car. Moreover, they didn’t expect an old man to be speeding.
“You see,” Easton said nervously, “I am running late for pizza delivery. We have a policy of delivering pizza within 45 minutes, or I’ll have to pay for it out of my pocket, and I need money for my wife’s treatment. I hope you understand…”
Officer Matthew looked at Easton’s teary eyes and trembling hands and felt deeply sad for him. However, he couldn’t go against his line of duty. They had to give him a ticket anyway. Easton was late for the delivery that day, prompting his manager to deduct(扣除) it from his salary. He was also warned that he would have to leave if he repeated the mistake.
Not losing heart, Easton set out for his deliveries the following day. “Rooster’s Pizza!” he shouted as he rang the doorbell of one of the houses on his list.

I spoke to your boss, and he agreed that your pay wouldn’t be deducted. Take care of your wife, and I appreciate the pizza!” Officer Matthew smiled and went inside.
Easton couldn’t believe what had just happened and was surprised by what Officer Matthew did for him. With trembling hands, he opened the envelope and found several dollar bills and a note that read: “Our duty is to protect and serve, but we are still humans at the end of the day. Have a wonderful day!” His eyes filled with tears, Easton rang the doorbell and thanked Officer Matthew again. Then he got into his car and drove away.

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita is an elite (精英) climber and has climbed Mount Qomolang-ma and Chogori (the second highest mount in the world). In 2016, she was chosen as Nation-al Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year. Since the birth of her son, her climbing has taken a back seat, but she would like to set out to inspire him.
Pasang is a skilled climber, having climbed Mount Qomolangma and Chogori. But to get there she had to overcome unbelievable adversity, as in Sherpa culture climbing is seen as a male activity. People would say she shouldn’t be with men and climb that rock.
Then when she had her first child, Eichan Nurbu, she faced fresh challenges because she was expected to stay at home and look after him as this was viewed as the mother’s responsibility. It’s difficult for her to balance (平衡) this with the climbing. But Pasang said that she wanted to inspire her son and show him that he should follow his dreams, so on his second birthday, November 14, 2019, she climbed Cholatse — a 6,440-meter-high mountain in the Qomolangma region.
Pasang said, “I learned so many things from my mother. She was single. She raised two kids by herself. She never went to school. From her, I saw how a woman can be strong. I have big respect for all the mothers, because the mothers are very strong. They’re always there for their children. They sacrifice (牺牲) their dreams for children.

This statistic (数据) is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them.
7. What can we learn about the author from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1
A. He seldom went sailing at the sea.
B. He forgot his experiences about the ocean.
C. He never went back to his hometown.
D. He had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay.
8. What is Australian marine life like according to the second paragraph
A. It is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually.
B. It depends on reefs for living greatly.
C. It may be faced with danger.
D. It is protected better than that in other oceans.
9. What is the aim of the Protect Our Coral Sea activity
A. To contribute to a complete ecosystem.
B. To prevent more marine species being endangered.
C. To set up a large nature reserve for reefs.
D. To raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness.
10. Why do Angus and the author create a little video
A. To ask more people to take action to protect the marine species.
B. To inspire more people to study the secret of the ocean.
C. To share their childhood experiences about the ocean.
D. To bring back to people their memory of ocean species.
12. Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying
A. Reading a newspaper. B. Playing a video game.
C. Sitting there doing nothing. D. Having a nice sleep at night.
13. How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF
A. Less than 7 hours. B. Just 7 hours.
C. No more than 9 hours. D. Around 9 hours.
14. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Low-cost Tips on Working B. Good Things to Do After Your Study
C. Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep D. How Long Should We Rest After Learning
