Don’t know how to take care of your plants A little spider-like robot will chase the sunlight, run to shade, dance when it’s doing well and stomp (跺脚) when it needs to be watered.
It’s called the HEXA Plant, a six-legged machine created by Vincross, a robotics company in Beijing, China.
The robot plant will crawl toward the sunlight when it needs it, then will rotate (转动) when it enjoys the sun in order to absorb its rays on all sides. When it needs to cool off, it will look for shade. It also plays with humans and dances when it is happy, moving its legs up and down. But it gets “angry” when it’s thirsty by stomping its legs.
With six legs, the HEXA Plant can move anywhere-in any direction and around any objects in its path. It’s even nimble enough to navigate (导航) unexpected drops, like if it had to suddenly step over a gap between two tabletops. It has a variety of “eyes”, including an infrared sensor (红外线感应器), a distance sensor, and a 720p camera with night vision, which could be very handy if you want it to send it out like a guard dog at night, to go check on any sudden noises. It has a built-in Wifi as well as various ports (USB) to expand its many talents.
So sure, it’ s not as cute as a garden gnome (守护精灵), but it can do a lot more than just stand there and look cute.
The inventor of the cute robot, Sun Tiangi, was inspired by a dead sunflower. He had idea why it died-whether it was because of the lack of sunshine or water. That’s when he had the idea for the walking plant. He says plants are passive. He wants to allow plants to experience movement.
4. What can’t the HEXA Plant do
A. Find a cool place when it feels hot.
B. Play with people.
C. Drink water when it’s thirsty.
D. Move in any direction.
5. What does the underlined word “nimble” in the forth paragraph mean
A. Happy. B. Clever. C. Angry. D. Passive.
6. What inspired Sun Tianqi to invent the HEXA Plant
A. A walking plant. B. A dead sunflower.
C. Sunshine and water. D. A strange animal.
7. Where can we most probably read the passage
A. In an advertisement. B. In a novel.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a storybook.
C
“Lei ming m ming baak ngo gong ge waa ah Do you understand what I am saying ” I stare back at the speaker dumbly, my lips parted, the ideas clear in my mind but a response unable to express itself in a language in my distant range. After an uncomfortable pause, a bunch of words spill out of my mouth, sounding forced and unnatural.
The anecdote (轶事) above is a semi-conversation I had in Malaysia years ago. A three-week stay in Malaysia once every few years was often the highlight of my summers — what more can you ask from a food paradise (天堂) But besides the family, food, and escape that Malaysia offered, trips also brought accompanying feelings of guilt that I just couldn’t seem to translate. For one month every few summers, I got a taste of what it feels to be an outsider in my own culture. I was a girl lost in translation, passively absorbing the various tongues shouted between the stalls (摊位) in the wet markets, quietly nodding along at my grandparents’ huge family dinners.
In America though, I am a different person. I don’t think twice about my grammar when speaking. I don’t struggle with the words and fear that my logic and stories won’t get through to people. So as a native English speaker, I do not have to worry daily about whether I’m judged for having an accent or whether I’m misunderstood across languages. In Malaysia, I naturally burst out “have you eaten ” instead of recalling the Malaysian equivalent “you makan already ” In Malaysia, everything about the way I speak — my accent, intonation, sentence structure, slang — gives me away. My American-ness is seen in the way I talk, dress and act. Maybe my face could pass for a Malaysian local, but once I open my mouth to speak I am so clearly not. It is uncomfortable and awkward, and sometimes I wonder if I did not look Asian at all would it be better, since there would be no more language expectation for me than for a white tourist.
8. How did the author feel in the anecdote
A. Confused and scared. B. Embarrassed and nervous.
C. Curious and surprised. D. Upset and puzzled.
9. Why did the author feel guilty according to Paragraph 2
A. Because she had to stay away from her family.
B. Because she didn’t enjoy speaking the language.
C. Because she had to accept what grandparents said.
D. Because she found it hard to understand the culture.
10. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph
A. She was a good language learner.
B. She didn’t like being an Asian.
C. She was judged unfairly in Malaysia.
D. She spoke English unconsciously in Malaysia.
11. From which column of the website does this article probably come from
A. Culture B. News. C. Education. D. Humor.
D
With digital devices always in hand, we are constantly connected to news, entertainment, and social interactions that seem to fill every moment of our day. It appears that boredom has nearly reached extinction. However, these short-term digital “solutions” may only serve to strengthen the grip of boredom over us. It’s like an addiction where we need more and more intense stimulation (刺激) to fight boredom. And this could finally lead to more boredom in the long run. Rather than fighting a constant battle against boredom, it is easier and more productive to actually embrace it and enjoy the benefits of being bored.
Paula Smith, a psychology professor in the UK, says boredom is an essential part of the creative process and should be applied in our day-to-day lives. During one of her studies into the effects of boredom, Smith’s researchers gave subjects various boring tasks to complete and then asked them to use their creative thinking. The people who had the most boring task — reading the phone book — came up with the most interesting uses plastic cups, which is a standard test of divergent thinking. Smith says that boredom encourages people’s minds to wander, leading them to more associative and creative ways of thinking.
Researchers in Ireland believe that boredom can encourage us to be more altruistic. In other words, boredom makes people more likely to engage in behaviors like donating to the charity and volunteering in the community. In their study, they found that when people are bored, they are less aware of their own activities and circumstances. This, they say, motivates people to search elsewhere to re-establish their self-meaning.
So next time you feel bored, don’t scroll it away on your phones. Not every gap should be filled with something to do. Sometimes less is most definitely more.
12. According to the writer, digital devices ________.
A. enable users to become more productive
B. help people enjoy the benefits of being bored
C. make it harder for users to overcome boredom
D. will eventually lead to the extinction of boredom
13. What is Smith’s research about
A. The possible solutions to boredom.
B. The application of creative thinking patterns.
C. The approaches to stimulate creative thinking.
D. The relationship between boredom and creativity.
14 The underlined word “altruistic” in paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A. active B. generous C. creative D. confident
15. Which of the following statements best summarizes the writer’s opinion
A. Stay busy, stay creative.
B. Keep away from boredom.
C. When you feel bored, be bored
D. Less boredom is more creativity.

Mike insisted the bed must be made every day. He and Linda were newly married, so Linda played along. Linda figured he took after his mother rather than his father. However, she took after her parents, who had the girl make the bed. Linda and Mike had no child, of course. They were young and poor and they made the bed in the apartment early in the morning on weekdays before they went to work.
Their habit of faithful bed making continued through the birth of their three children.Linda learned from her mother that even when she was in the hospital having a baby (which Linda did three times in three years), Mike made the bed without fail.
Finally Linda and Mike made the “Big Move” and arrived in California. When they were invited to neighborhood dinner parties, Linda found most Californians just pulled a quilt (被子) over their messy bed, but she always had a proper bedspread (床单), which she folded neatly over the pillows.
Once, when Linda and Mike were having a quarrel, she refused to make the bed. Without saying anything at all, Mike did the job alone.
Of course, years later the children grew up and moved out. There were a lot of changes. Still, Linda and Mike stood on both sides of their bed every morning, neatly making the bed. Whenever Linda wanted to give up their daily routine, Mike would ask her to help him make the bed with determination. It seemed important to his peace of mind.
After they celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary, it occurred to Linda that the way they made the bed was like a symbol of their marriage. Their style had always been both of them working as a team. Mike painted walls, created vegetable gardens and fixed everything that broke inside the house and out.Linda prepared meals and did most of the childcare. This system worked well for them for many a year.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
However, as they were getting old, Mike’s legs began causing him trouble.

11. From which column of the website does this article probably come from
A. Culture B. News. C. Education. D. Humor.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. A

14. The underlined word “altruistic” in paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A. active B. generous C. creative D. confident
15. Which of the following statements best summarizes the writer’s opinion
A. Stay busy, stay creative.
B. Keep away from boredom.
C. When you feel bored, be bored
D. Less boredom is more creativity.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】However, as they were getting old, Mike’s legs began causing him trouble. His left leg was losing feeling, and his balance suffered. But Mike still stood on his side of the bed with courage and determination every morning. Linda felt sad and asked him to sit beside her while she was making the bed. When doing it alone, she had to move from one side of the bed to the other to fold the quilts. Then she had to continue to make the bedspread, back and forth, back and forth.
They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, and everything slowed down. Walking was difficult for Mike, and Linda did not walk as fast as she used to. There were a number of changes in their lifestyle. They didn’t quarrel with each other any more. They spent most of their time together every day. Their children came to visit them regularly. One day, Mike was ill in hospital, and Linda was very sad. However, she decided to make the bed every morning because she didn’t want to make Mike upset when he came back and saw the messy bed.
