Passage 1
Sam and Joe were astronauts. There was once a very dangerous trip and the more experienced astronauts knew there was only a small chance of coming back alive(活着). Sam and Joe, however, thought it would be exciting though a little dangerous. “We’re the best men for the job,” they said to the boss. “There may be problems, but we can find the answers.” “They’re the last people I’d trust,” thought the boss. “But all the other astronauts have refused to go.”
Once they were in space, Joe had to go outside to make some repairs. When the repairs were done, he tried to get back inside the spaceship. But the door was locked. He knocked but there was no answer. He knocked again, louder this time, and again no answer came. Then he hit the door as hard as he could and finally a voice said, “Who’s there ” “It’s me! Who else could it be ” shouted Joe. Sam let him in all right but you can imagine that Joe never asked to go on a trip with Sam again!

Passage 2
Some people remember the things by writing notes to themselves. Then they leave the notes in obvious places, such as on the table or on the floor in the middle of the living room. I don’t think I like to write notes to myself. Most of the time I lose them or forget to look at them until it’s too late.
I prefer to use an alarm clock(闹钟)to tell me what I should do. I have ten alarm clocks in my house. They could tell me about things. For example, if I have to make a telephone call at a certain time, I’ll set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the telephone. Or if I want to watch a certain television program, I’ll set an alarm clock at the right time and put the clock on top of the TV set. I can remember almost anything if I use my clocks. However, sometimes an alarm clock goes off and I don’t know what it means. I always remember setting it, but not why I set it. If the clock is by the telephone, I know I may have set it to tell me to call someone, but I can’t be sure. I might have set it to tell myself that somebody was to call me at a certain time.

Several days ago, some students from the US visited our school. When we talked, I discovered 36 differences in school life between the US and China. For example, each class 37 fifty minutes in the US. It is a little 38 than that in China. We usually have forty-five minutes in each class. Another difference is that they have less break time between 39 . Besides, although most schools in both countries finish their 40 classes at 12 o’clock, the students in the US only have an hour-long break, so they 41 eat lunch quickly. Their afternoon classes begin at 1:00 pm and school is over at 42 3:00 pm. Then they take part in club activities or play sports.
Many Chinese students don’t work during their high school years, while the US students like to find a part-time job in 43 free time. They don’t have a dream job in mind. They think 44 is no difference between jobs. Working is a useful experience for them and they make money at the same time. Some of them even take one-year full-time jobs 45 they leave high school and then go to college.
