三、阅读单选
Miss Martha kept a little cake shop. Two or three times a week a customer came in who she began taking an interest in. He was a middle-aged man. His clothes were worn but he looked neat, and had very good manners. He always bought two loaves of stale bread. Never did he call for anything but stale bread.
Once Miss Martha saw a red and brown mark on his fingers. She was sure that he was a very poor artist.
She wanted to add something good to eat to his stale bread, but her courage failed at the act. She knew the pride of artists.
One day the customer came as usual, laid his coins on the showcase, and called for his stale bread. While Miss Martha was reaching for them, a fire-engine came lumbering past. The customer hurried to the door to look. Suddenly inspired, Miss Martha took the chance.
On the bottom shelf was a pound of fresh butter. With a bread knife Miss Martha made a deep cut in each of the stale loaves, put in a lot of butter, and pressed the loaves tight again. When the customer came again, she was tying the paper around them. When he had gone, Miss Martha smiled, not without a slight beating fast of the heart.
For a long time that day she imagined the scene when he discovered her little kind trick.
Suddenly the front doorbell jangled viciously. Miss Martha felt a little scared and hurried to the front. A young man and her artist were there. His face was very red, his hat was on the back of his head, and his hair was in a mess.
“Silly!” he shouted loudly. “You have destroyed me!” He held his two fists and shook them angrily at Miss Martha.
“Come on,” the young man said, “you’ve said enough.” He pulled the angry one out, and then came back. “He’s an architectural draftsman,” he said. “He’s been working hard for three months drawing a plan for a new city hall. It was a prize competition. He finished inking the lines yesterday. You know, a draftsman always makes his drawing in pencil first. When it’s done, he rubs out the pencil lines with stale bread. That’s better than erasers. Well, today — well, you know, that butter isn’t — well, his plan isn’t good for anything now.”

Meeting Anne
Matthew Cuthbert was on his way to Bright River on his horse and carriage. He was a quiet man who didn’t speak much, especially to strangers. So, he enjoyed the journey and the smell of the apple trees in silence. He reached Bright River but there was no sign of the 5:30 train which he’d come for. Matthew asked the station manager if it would come soon.
“It came half an hour ago,” answered the manager. “There was one passenger. She’s sitting over there.”
“I don’t understand. I’m not expecting a girl,” said Matthew. “It’s a boy that I’ve come for.”
“Guess there’s some mistake,” he said. “Talk to the girl. ▲ That’s for sure.”
Matthew looked at her. She wore an old brown hat which covered two braids of very long, thick, red hair. Her face was small and thin with lots of freckles (雀斑). Her big green eyes looked back at him.
Matthew began walking over but as soon as she saw him walking her way, she started the conversation.

This girl was different.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” he said shyly. “Come on. Give me your bag.”
As they rode home, Anne talked on and on. Normally, too much talking would make Matthew angry, but from Anne, he didn’t mind. She apologized but Matthew didn’t want her to stop.

Bicycles have long been used for transportation in China. But recently, cycling has become popular because of the result of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic has made cycling more popular as officials closed some gymnasiums or places for exercise.
Linda Mo could not exercise indoors in May because of the pandemic. So, she started cycling and soon loved the sport. “I realized a racing bicycle was quite different than a regular bike,” she said, adding, “It’s very fast and exciting ...”
For cyclist Yang Lan, the sport also provides an escape from the daily difficulties of life. “With the pandemic ... it seems to be the only way for us to run away from the terrible city life ...” she said.
Naturally, the growth in cycling has increased the demand for bicycles. Beijing stores’ sales rose 20 to 30 percent from March to June, compared to the same period last year. Zhou Fuyuan, the founder of Magic Cycling, said China’s bicycle market was a $12 to $15 billion industry in 2021. Research and Markets predict that the sales could reach $16.5 billion by 2026.
Because of increasing demand and worldwide supply chain problems, people must wait weeks or months to get one. For every Specialized bicycle sold in Beijing at least 10 customers are waiting for their bicycles to arrive, Joanna Lei chose to pay more for bicycle available. She said the money was better spent than on a luxury bag. “What you are investing in is your own body and a very good habit,” she said. Lei added, “I think it is more valuable than clothes that you wear or handbags that you use.”
People will have more choices for sports and entertainment when the pandemic is over. But Feng says he expects cycling to remain popular because of China’s growing health concerns and awareness of environmental protection.
“Such a lifestyle is probably healthier and is more beneficial to society,” Yang said. She added, “I think people now have a good sense of environmental protection and hope to do good for society.”
34.Which of the following is NOT the reason why cycling has become popular in China

Sam, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog.
In one video, for example, Sam shared how he had learned the Chinese word “dongxi”, he translated each part separately into “east west”. And he introduced one theory about how “dongxi” came to mean “things”. He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say “qu mai dongxi”, you’d be saying, “Tm going to buy things.”
Some other videos show his reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in Chinese traditional custom, which are quite welcome among his 40, 000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese,” Sam said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.”
Like many foreigners, Sam once believed that all Chinese could perform kung fu, flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that developed. But after he got a scholarship (奖学金) to study in China in 2019, his view changed. “China has entered a new period, but many people’s impressions of China are still stuck in the 1970s,” Sam said. “That’s why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019.”
Until now, Sam has posted more than 40 Chinese culture vlogs online. But making these vlogs is not easy. Take reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo as an example.
“I can understand and read every word in the poem,” Sam said. “But to touch readers, I need to use proper feelings while reading.” So he needed to look for much background information and make his feelings suit each part of the poem.
Though shooting these vlogs takes lots of time, the young man feels proud that his vlogs have inspired many people. Sam said that he wanted to continue bridging the differences between two cultures. “This goal may not be achieved easily, but I will spare no efforts to do my part.”
