The Silk Road ran across China all the way to several Mediterranean (地中海) countries. It opened during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC——AD 24). Silk went west to Rome. And other goods, including vegetable and fruit seeds (种子), came to China through this road.
For example, grapes first grew in areas along the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. They came to China from Dayuan, an ancient country in central Asia, during the Han Dynasty (206 BC——AD 220).
Spinach is native to ancient Persia (today’s Iran). It came to China around the Tang Dynasty (AD 618——907).

Passage2(2023上·全国·七年级专题练习)Chinese food with a twist
I have lived in China for years. I sometimes miss the food back home, such as my mom’s cooking, and Americanized Chinese food.
But why would I miss it when I can get real Chinese food in Beijing Well, American Chinese food has its own charms (魅力).
American Chinese food actually comes from Guangdong. In the early 20th century, thousands of Guangdong people came to the US. They built Chinatowns and brought along their own cooking style (烹饪方式).
But they changed their dishes a lot to appeal to American tastes. American Chinese food is usually sweeter and heavier than traditional Chinese food. My favorites are General Tso’s chicken (左宗棠鸡) and chow mein (炒面).
Every American Chinese takeout meal also comes with fortune cookies (幸运饼干). They are thin, hollow (空心的) cookies. They have a small piece of paper inside. You can read your “fortune” on the paper, along with your “lucky numbers”. However, when I eat takeout in China, I never get these cookies.
