Mike White wasn’t too concerned when his five-year-old dog, BuzzMan, hadn’t returned last February. Si, it had been a few hours, so using his cell phone, White followed the sound from the GPS on the dog to a narrow cave entrance just large enough for a dog like BuzzMan. There were fresh dog prints outside. Now White was much more concerned.
Brewington and Mirza were called in for help. They arrived at once and set about enlarging the entranceway by hand. The passageway was just three feet high, forcing the two men to slowly crawl(爬行), the only light coming from headlamps attached to their helmets(头盔). They stopped when they hit a tight space and returned to the outside world.
When BuzzMan hadn’t appeared by Sunday afternoon, smaller volunteers were called in. At 5:00 p.m., four new cavers, two men and two women, moved through the entrance. What added to their difficulty was the dangerous cave floods. “If it rains,” Mirza says, “the cave will kill people.” That night’s weather forecast: rain.
After an hour or so, they reached a difficult situation and could go no farther. Still, one of them, Romanak, decided to push a bit farther before quitting. He crawled 30 feet more, and the passage gave way to a large room. And there was BuzzMan, standing on a narrow rock. Romanak gently attached a chain to his collar, helping him off the rock and out.
At 9:30 p.m.—30 hours later, BuzzMan got out of the cave, running straight to Mike White and licking him by wet kisses.
In total, eight cavers answered the request to rescue Buzz Man on a volunteer basis and were thought highly of by the community. Mirza laughed off the praise. After all, going into tight spaces was their hobby. “What we consider fun,” he said, “often makes most people frightened.”

Many adults in South Korea have chosen either not to have children or not to marry. A South Korean government agency announced in September that the total fertility rate reached 0. 81 last year. The total fertility rate is the average number of babies born to each woman in their reproductive years. South Korea5s fertility rate has been the world’s lowest for three years now.
The population decreased for the first time in 2021. It raised concerns for severe damage to the economy. Some observers expect labor shortages and high spending on retirement payments as the number of older people increases while the number of taxpayers decreases. President Yoon Suk Yeol has ordered policymakers to find better ways to deal with the problem. The fertility rate, he said, is still decreasing although South Korea spent $ 210 billion over the past 16 years to increase it.
Many young South Koreans say that they don’t want to have a family. Reasons some say for not having children include: a difficult job market, costly housing, inequality between the sexes, and social inequality. The high cost of raising children in a competitive society is also a reason. Some women say men expect them to do much of the childcare while they face discrimination at work.
Lee So-Young is a population policy expert at the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. She said, “People think our country isn’t an easy place to live.” And she added, “They believe their children can’t have better lives than them.” Choi Yoon Kyung is an expert at the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. She said many people who fail to enter good schools and get good jobs feel they have become “dropouts” who “cannot be happy”.
South Korea has been offering different incentives (刺激) and support programs for those who give birth to many children. But Choi said the fertility rate has been falling too fast to see any real effects.
8. Why does the author mention the number in paragraph 1
A. To present a fact. B. To explain a rule.
C. To clarify a concept. D. To make a comparison.
9. What could be a result of low fertility rate
A. More citizens fail to be happy.
B. Retirement payment falls down.
C. People have to pay higher taxes.
D. Less people are available for work.
10. Which is a cause of the decreasing fertility rate in South Korea
A. The gender equality.
B. The loss of government support.
C. The ever increasing life pressure.
D. The high expectation of children.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. The rising stress among young South Koreans.
B. The government^ effort to improve fertility rate.
C. The continuous low fertility rate in South Korea.
D. The severe economic damage of less new-born babies.
D
Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics(工作狂). How could a person tell that he/she is a workaholic A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: when work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working—or doing something to promote their work—they feel anxious and guilty. They hang onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to make sure they’re essential.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a respectable pursuit(追求) doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease.
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study published in the American Journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising, since if you’re married to your work, it can be difficult to be married to anything, or anyone, else. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of workaholic fathers experienced more depression and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feelings of self-worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life, you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a solution.
12. What can we infer about workaholics
A. They put work in the first place.
B. They usually have life outside work.
C. They often get pleasure from work.
D. They win respect from their workmates.
13. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A Bad influences of workaholism.
B. Reasons for being workaholics.
C. How people deal with their addictions.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
14. What can we do to help workaholics in life
A. Force them to join family activities.
B. Reward them for their hard work.
C. Help them find self-worth and confidence.
D. Try to understand and support them.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.

13. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about
A. Bad influences of workaholism.
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.
A 13. A 14. D 15. B

上文“we feel refreshed after a holiday is the break from routine.(我们在假期后感到神清气爽的部分原因是可以从日常生活中解脱出来。)”提到routine,即我们日常例行公事一般的生活;下文“So doing things differently might take a bit of effort at first, but you'll soon feel the benefits. Whether it's learning a skill, or visiting somewhere new, these all require different ways of thinking.(所以,一开始用不同的方式做事可能需要一点努力,但你很快就会感受到好处。无论是学习一项技能,还是参观一个新的地方,这些都需要不同的思维方式。)”提出用不同的方式做事情可能需要一些努力,这里“不同的方式”指的是与上文的routine不同的方式,所以空处应该选择带有routine“常规”、“例行程序”近义或同义的选项。A项“我们天生是有习惯的生物。”符合文意,“习惯”和“常规”为近义词。故选A项。
上文“Lifelong learning requires us to have a growth mind set, to up size our knowledge of the world.(终身学习需要我们有一种成长的心态,要增加我们对世界的了解。)”提出要终生学习,下文“It’s the learning that makes the difference, firing up our curiosity and engaging our minds.(真正起作用的是学习本身,它激发了我们的好奇心,激发了我们的思维。)”
上文“Many people decide that the best way to keep their minds feeling younger is to really change up their life and train for a new job.(许多人认为,保持头脑年轻的最好方法是真正改变生活,为一份新工作进行训练。)”
后文“When starting a new journey, ask yourself what you hope to gain, why you want to make this move, and what you expect to get out of it at the end.(当开始一段新的旅程时,问问自己,你希望得到什么,为什么要做出这一举动,最后你希望从中得到什么。)”的连续发问都是大家在做每件事情之前需要问自己的问题;而上文“Although it will most likely be challenging at times, if your reason why is strong enough, you will always gain the benefits.(虽然有时很可能会很有挑战性,但如果你的理由足够充分,你总会从中受益。)”
上文“But, mentally, a new skill also provide you with motivation and increase your confidence.(但是,在心理上,一项新技能也能给你动力,增加你的信心。)”和下文“And, of course, learning will open new opportunities in life that will boost your happiness.(当然,学习也会给你带来新的生活机会,让你更快乐。谁不想变得更快乐呢?)”都提到了学习新技能对情绪的改善,提高自信和幸福感,所以空处也需要填写相应选项,表达学习能如何对情绪做到改善。D项“因此你可以克服任何恐惧和焦虑。”符合文意。故选D项。
