When White met the pit bull puppy in 2018, Darby was young, playful, strong as an ox. Then, in the summer of 2019, came Darby's date with destiny.
White was fishing in Northern Caledonia’s Bodega Bay. He left Darby, then a year old and 100 pounds, in the parked car with windows down, while he cast his line a few yards away. The fish weren't biting, White recall, until, suddenly, they were.
At first, White thought he had hooked a stingray. But as he reeled (绕线) it in, he realized it was a sevengill shark, about 6 feet long. Not uncommon but still dangerous He brought it close and carefully unhooked it, expecting it to swim away. It didn't. The shark bit his ankle.
“All of a sudden there was blood everywhere,” says White. He yelled for help, hoping the fishermen down the beach could hear. But they didn't seem to know what was going on. Fortunately, Darby did. He jumped out of the car and ran toward the water. He ran right up to the shark and sank his teeth into its gills (鱼鳃).
“That just made the shark bite down harder,” White says. Darby backed off, then regrouped and attacked the shark’s tail. The shark released its grip (紧抓), and White managed to push it into shallow water, where it swam off. “The whole thing took less than a minute,” White says, “but it left plenty of damage.” White was able to stop the bleeding and get to a hospital, where he learned that the wound was very severe.
That would've been the end of it, had Darby's story not gone viral. White was contacted by NBC News and CNN. That's when the countless cash offers started to come in. But the big dog was not for sale.

In the US only about 3% of early childhood teachers are male. Experts say this may have a great influence on young children whose understanding of gender roles and identity is rapidly forming. Research has found that getting access to different teachers is beneficial for children. This means the youngest learners are more likely to be exposed toa wide variety of games and communication. It can also help them develop healthy ideas about gender.
“In our society and world, we tend to have very specific stereotypes (刻板印象) of gender roles,” said Mindi Reich-Shapiro, an assistant professor in the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and one of the authors of a recent study. “It's necessary for the kids to see other possibilities and paths they can choose.”
Although they largely felt supported by colleagues and families, many male teachers surveyed stated that in their career as early education teachers they did face social and cultural resistance. Some even noted that the parents were surprised or concerned when they found a male teacher with their kids. Moreover, the male teachers were sometimes advised not to hug children.
Reich-Shapiro and other researchers have made some suggestions to increase the number of male early education teachers. Low wages have long been considered as a major problem in this field. More than 70% of male teachers said they intended to stay in the early education workforce, and pointed out that the major motivator for their commitment to their long-term career was an increased salary. Thus, the report recommended that all preschool educators be paid as much as the primary school teachers. The government should establish support groups and provide guidance and professional advice for male early education educators.
Reich-Shapiro said that traditional recruitment methods for early childhood teachers could not solve the gender gap in the field. He proposes providing young individuals with opportunities to stay and work with children either through training or voluntary programs, targeting groups of men who are considering changing their jobs, such as fathers and fathers-to-be.
28. Mow is the early childhood education in the US
A. It lacks male teachers. B. It neglects gender roles.
C. It influences kids' understanding. D. It exposes kids to adventure
29. What is learned about the male teachers in the study
A. They find it awkward to hug children. B. They fail to meet the parents' expectations.
C. They can't keep up with female colleagues. D. They feel prejudiced socially and culturally.
30. What is essential for men to be devoted to early childhood education
A. Social recognition. B. Job security. C. Higher pay. D. Better workplace.
31. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Early education: a specific target B. Early education: a challenging field
C. Male preschool teachers: a vital necessity D. Male preschool teachers: a potential career
D
A new study suggests that mindfulness education—lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body—can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.
After finding that students who self-reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades, researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.
They designed a study focusing on sixth-graders in a Boston school. The study showed that sixth-graders who participated in an eight-week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn't. Practicing mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment, expanding students' capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.
Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices, like focusing on a rock for a minute, then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock. Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. The students were randomly assigned between the groups.
At the end of the eight weeks, the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education, and better able to practice self-control. And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. The group who attended coding classes didn't see the same benefits.
The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students' attention skills, as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress. The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students' ability to succeed.
32. What was the purpose of the study
A. To examine the techniques for practicing mindfulness.
B. To study the effects of group mindfulness training on students.
C. To see how students help themselves to perform better on tests.
D. To understand why mindfulness training calms the mind and body.
33. How was the study conducted
A. By listing benefits of mindfulness education.
B. By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions.
C. By teaching different students different mindfulness skills.
D. By comparing two groups of students attending different classes.
34. What change took place after the students practiced mindfulness work
A. They felt easier to stay focused. B. They were better at computer coding.
C. Their mind was wandering more actively. D. Their brains were more aware of negativity.
35. Who are the most possible target readers of the passage
A. Stressful parents. B. Mindful instructors.
C. Emotional students. D. School educators.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business-a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don't have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here. " Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

I was completely knocked out by the news. Without Emma's voice to guide me, I would definitely mess up and this was not how everything was supposed to go! As I stood there, feeling at a loss, a gentle touch on my shoulder brought me back to reality. It was my mom, wearing a comforting smile. After having a brief idea of my story, she said in a firm tone, “You've worked so hard. You can make it on your own. "Memories of countless rehearsal came flooding back, drowning my fears and losses. Swinging into action, I adjusted my performance to a solo, practicing in no time.
Finally came the big moment. Taking a deep breath. I stepped onto the stage, enveloped in the glow of the lights. At first, my voice trembled with nervousness, but as the song progressed, my confidence soared. I poured my emotions into the performance, letting my voice carry my feelings into the air. The crowd watched in awe, their applause and cheers echoing in the hall. Facing the overwhelming response, I knew that I had conquered my fears. Yes, the unexpected discouragement can be a blessing in disguise if we have a belief in ourselves and never give up our dreams.
