However, one autumn, things changed. It began with a tiny disagreement about a horse, which grew into a major difference. The difference led to angry words, followed by weeks of silence between the brothers.
One morning there was a knock on Paul's door. He opened it and saw a builder holding his toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days' work, " the builder said. "Are there any jobs I could help with "
"Yes, " answered Paul, extremely pleased to see the builder. "I do have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek(小溪). That's' my brother's farm. “Stop! Stop!”
The police officer ran down the street as fast as he could. “Stop!” he said again. But it was no use. The car kept going. The officer said to himself, “They must be going ten miles an hour.”
There weren't many cars on the road in the early 1900s. Most people thought driving ten miles an hour was too fast for safety. And since police officers didn't have cars of their own, they could only run after speedsters(快速驾驶者).
The early cars were faster than the horse drawn buggies(马车) that most people still used. And they frightened (使惊恐) the horses. One car maker tried to keep the horses cool. He made the car with the horse's head. He hoped real horses would think it was a horse and buggy. They didn't. It frightened them just as much.
The car with the horse's head wasn't the only early car that would look strange today. Some looked like buggies without a horse. Others had three wheels (轮子). A few even had their steering wheels (方向盘) in the back seat.

Then, Paul, with tears in his eyes, said to the builder…‘Thank you so much.’”可知,兄弟两人在建筑工修建的桥上意识到各自的错误,重归于好。故选C。
39.判断推理题。根据第五段“The builder said thoughtfully, ‘I think I understand the situation and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you.’”和第六段中“Instead of a fence, there was a bridge, stretching from one side of the creek to the other.”以及倒数第二段中“As Paul stood on the bridge, staring in amazement, his younger brother Jason, came across, and took Paul's hand. ‘You are a good man to have built this bridge after all I've done,’ said Jason.”可知,Paul要求建筑工做栅栏,可建筑工却建了桥,两兄弟重归于好,所以建筑工建桥的目的就是让两兄弟和好。故选D。
