Many workers have had no choice but to adapt to working from home in recent months since offices shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic And the noisy situation and endless housework may result in a terrible emotion. A new option is waiting for you. That is WFH: work from a hotel.
Hotel Figuero
A special program titled Work Perks aims to reposition some of 94-year-old Hotel Figuero’s 268 rooms as day-use offices.
According to Managing Director Connie Wang, the set-up launched in June and is a great opportunity to get out of their houses with high-speed Wi-Fi, unlimited printing privileges and free parking. The 350-square-foot rooms sell for $ 129 per day, with an option to extend to an overnight stay for an additional $ 20.
The Wythe
A boutique hotel in Brooklyn. The hotel recently announced a partnership with co-working office space company Industrious through which it is recycling 13 second-story guest rooms to serve as offices for up to four people.
Each of the rooms has a small outdoor platform, and dogs are welcome. Pricing starts at $ 200 and goes up to $ 275, depending on how many people use the space.
The Sawyer
The Sawyer, in Sacramento, California, is offering pool cabanas (更衣室) for use as outdoor offices, complete with fast Wi-Fi, free parking and catered lunch for $ 150 per day.
HotelsByDay
Yannis Moati founded HotelsByDay back in 2015. That company has grown to include more than 1,500 hotels, and has seen a significant increase in the number of inquiries for day-use bookings lately.
Moati said the current situation will force hotels to upgrade themselves to stay alive, and he predicted that offering rooms for day-use only is one of the directions they will go.
1. How much should one pay for a 24-hour stay in Hotel Figuero
A. $ 129. B. $ 149. C. $ 150. D. $ 200.
2. Which hotel allows pets in
A. The Wythe. B. The Sawyer.
C. HotelsByDay. D. Hotel Figuero.
3. What do we know about Yannis Moati
A. He started a program titled Work Perks.
B. He has upgraded at least 1,500 rooms.
C. He usually predicts everything correctly.
D. He is optimistic about the WFH trend.

根据Hotel Figuero部分的“The 350-square-foot rooms sell for $ 129 per day, with an option to extend to an overnight stay for an additional $ 20.(这种350平方英尺的房间日租费用为129美元,多花20美元就可以过夜)”可知,在Hotel Figuero在过一夜要花$ 129+$ 20=$149。
根据The Wythe部分的“Each of the rooms has a small outdoor platform, and dogs are welcome.(每个房间都有一个室外小露台,而且可以带狗狗进入)”可知,The Wythe允许宠物进入。故选A。
根据最后一段的“Moati said the current situation will force hotels to upgrade themselves to stay alive, and he predicted that offering rooms for day-use only is one of the directions they will go.(Moati说,当前的形势迫使酒店通过自我改造来维持生存,他还预测,提供专供白天使用的房间将会是酒店业发展的一个方向)”可推知,Moati对WFH的趋势持乐观态度。故选D。
B
It is true that human beings need some rest to stay alive, but it doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps. And that’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Herpin. Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
When the doctors paid a visit to him in his home in New Jersey, he was 90 years old. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason No one could be sure. Herpin died at the age of 94.
4. The main idea of this passage is that_________.
A. large numbers of people do not need sleep
B. a person was found who actually didn’t need any sleep
C. everyone needs some sleep to stay alive
D. people can live longer by trying not to sleep
5. The doctors called on Herpin, expecting_________.

由第一段“but it doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps. And that’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Herpin. Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.( 但一个人什么时候睡,睡多久并不重要。
由第二段“They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made.( 他们认为他肯定有某种睡眠。

C
Scientists believe that one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us is the sense of sound. We are warned of danger by sounds. Sounds serve to please us in music. Sound has a waste product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.
In order to know how noise affects people and animals, scientists have been studying for several years. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully.
Sounds is measured in units called decibels (分贝). At a level of 140 decibels people feel pain in their ears.
Trucks , buses , motorcycles, airplanes, boats, factories---all these things make noise. They trouble not only our ears, but minds and bodies as well.
There is a saying that it is so noisy that you can’t hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don’t, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.
Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that has already faced enough stress.
8. The sense of sound _________.
A. makes us feel excited
B. helps us hear more clearly
C. is something harmful to us
D. helps to know what is happening around us
9. When sound is turned into noise, ______________.
A. people grow worse and worse
B. it makes us forget all the past
C. people don’t know what to do with everyday life
D. it will be a kind of pollution to people
10. Why does the passage say peace and quiet are becoming harder to find
A. Because the world is making more and more noise.
B. Because wars and battles happen here and there in the world.
C. Because all the sounds are becoming over 140 decibels.
D. Because some machines can make noise.
11. Doctors say we can hear ourselves think __________.
A. if we don’t like to hear noise
B. if we have no aches or pains in our bodies
C. if there isn’t too much noise
D. if we can’t be careful of noise
D 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第一句“Scientists believe that one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us is the sense of sound.(科学家认为,我们知道周围发生了什么最重要的手段之一是声音的感觉。)”
根据第一段的句子“Noise has been called unwanted sound(噪音被称为不必要的声音)”.和第二段的句子“Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully.(噪音污染是一种应该认真对待的威胁)”可知,噪音对人来说是一种污染。
根据第一段的句子“Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.(噪音越来越大,在情况好转之前可能会变得更糟。)”和第四段的句子“Trucks , buses , motorcycles, airplanes, boats, factories---all these things make noise.(卡车、公共汽车、摩托车、飞机、船只、工厂——所有这些东西都会产生噪音。)” 故选A.
根据倒数第二段的句子“There is a saying that it is so noisy that you can’t hear yourself think.(有一种说法是,它太吵了,以至于你听不到自己的想法。)”
D
On Christmas Eve a few years ago an English couple received a very special telephone call. It was only a 20-second call but it was very important. The Haydens’ 15-year-old daughter had disappeared six months before. On Christmas Eve she rang them. “I’m phoning to wish a happy Christmas, ”she said, “I love you.”
Ronals and Edwine Hayden were so happy that they started a special telephone service called “Alive and Well”. The service helps parents to get in touch with children who have run away from home.
Young people can phone “Alive and Well” and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child of making him return home.
Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home, so children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses.
The Haydens and their helpers write down the tape recorded telephone messages and connect the address given. Many of the 30,000 British teenagers who have left home are probably in London. For only two pence they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents. They can dial 5675339 and stop a parent’s worry: Is he dead or alive
12. The Haydens’ daughter rang her parents_________.
A. because she knew she had done something wrong
B. in order to give them her address
C. to say she was coming home soon
D. in order to comfort her worried parents
13. If you ring “Alive and Well”, _________.
A. you will get the information you want
B. your message will be passed over to your parents
C. your information will be kept a secret
D. your parents will know where you are
14. Which of the following is NOT true
A. The Haydens received an “Alive and Well” call from their daughter before Christmas.
B. An “Alive and Well” call usually costs only two pence because it is quite near and short.
C. In this text at least 30,000 British teenagers don’t want to live with their parents.
D. The “Alive and Well” call is far less important than the message it sends.
15. Through “Alive and Well”, parents of runaway children_________.
A. often fail to persuade their children to return home
B. know nothing from their children
C. can say nothing to their children
D. can ask the police to help them to find lost children
D 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第一段“On Christmas Eve a few years ago an English couple received a very special telephone call. It was only a 20-second call but it was very important. The Haydens’ 15-year-old daughter had disappeared six months before. On Christmas Eve she rang them. “I’m phoning to wish a happy Christmas, ”she said, “I love you.”(几年前的平安夜,一对英国夫妇接到了一个非常特别的电话。那通电话只有20秒,但很重要。海登夫妇15岁的女儿在六个月前失踪了。圣诞节前夕,她给他们打了电话。“我打电话是想祝你圣诞快乐,”她说,“我爱你。”)”和第三段“Young people can phone “Alive and Well” and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child of making him return home. ( 年轻人可以打电话给“Alive and Well”,给他们的父母留言。电话由答录机接听。所以没人能劝那孩子回家。)”和第四段“Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home, so children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses.( 18岁以下的离家出走儿童的父母可以要求警察把他们的孩子带回家,所以孩子们不想告诉父母他们在哪里。
根据第四段“Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home, so children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses.( 18岁以下的离家出走儿童的父母可以要求警察把他们的孩子带回家,所以孩子们不想告诉父母他们在哪里。通过“Alive and Well”,他们可以给父母打电话,而不用担心这个或给出他们的地址。)”可知,本段讲述了“Alive and Well”专线电话的功能及操作,如果拨打这个专线电话,你可以得到你想要的信息,把你的信息传递给父母,信息被保密,但是你的父母不会知道你在哪里。故D项正确.
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Ronals and Edwine Hayden were so happy that they started a special telephone service called “Alive and Well”. The service helps parents to get in touch with children who have run away from home. (罗纳斯和埃德温·海登非常高兴,于是他们创建了一项名为“Alive and Well”的特殊电话服务。这项服务帮助父母与离家出走的孩子取得联系。)”可知,该专线是Ronals and Edwine Hayden夫妇在圣诞节前接到了离家出走的女儿的电话后创建的,设立的,所以圣诞节前,海登夫妇接到了女儿打来的电话不是通过这个专线打来的。A项错误。故选A项。
根据第三段的“The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child of making him return home.(电话由答录机接听。所以没人能劝那孩子回家。)”和第四段的“Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses.( 通过“Alive and Well”,他们可以给父母打电话,而不用担心这个或给出他们的地址。)”

D 17. E 18. G 19. A 20. C
根据上文“Books have a beginning, a middle and an end.(书有开头、中间和结尾)”以及后文“To properly read a book, you should pay attention to its importance.(要正确地读一本书,就应该注意它的重要性)”可知,上文提到了书的结构,后文则说正确地阅读一本书,可知本句与上文构成因果关系,指出一本书应该从头读到尾。
根据上文“Choose a well-lit and quiet place to read your book.(选择一个光线充足、安静的地方读书)”以及后文“You are more likely to concentrate on the words on the page if you are not affected by noises or other things.(如果你不受噪音或其他事物的影响,你就更有可能把注意力集中在书页上的单词上)”可知,上文提到了阅读的地方,后文则提到不受噪音或其他事物的影响,可推测本句是在说明如何处理容易干扰读书注意力的事物,故E选项“关掉你的手机和电视,这样你的注意力就不会受到干扰”符合语境,故选E。
根据上文“Decide how much time you want to devote to the reading. You may want to adjust this time allotment according to how long and difficult the reading material is.(决定你想在阅读上花多少时间。你可以根据阅读材料的长度和难度来调整时间分配)”可知,本段主要是关于阅读的时间分配问题,本句为本段最后一句,应承接上文举例说明如何安排一本书的阅读时间,故G选项“例如,花4小时详细阅读一本250页的书,1小时做笔记”符合语境,故选G。
【19题详解】
根据后文“If you own your book, use note-taking symbols in the paragraphs. For example, if you find something that is important, put a star or a few words next to it. If you are unsure of something and it needs more research, put a question mark next to it.(如果你有自己的书,在段落中使用笔记符号。例如,如果你发现了重要的东西,在它旁边画个星号或几个字。如果你对某件事不确定,需要更多的研究,在旁边打个问号)”可知,本段主要是关于在书上做笔记的问题,故A选项“在你的书里做笔记”符合语境,故选A。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Write answers to questions at the end of your reading and give definitions of important terms. For every 100 pages of text you should have at least three to five pages of written notes.(在阅读结束时回答问题,并给出重要术语定义。每写100页的文章,你至少要有3到5页的笔记)”以及后文“If you are using a computer to take notes, don’t copy and paste text from your reading.(如果你用电脑做笔记,不要复制粘贴阅读材料中的内容)”可知,上文提到了阅读结束时回答问题,后文强调不要复制粘贴,可推测回答问题要用自己的话进行表述。

The Sawyer
The Sawyer, in Sacramento, California, is offering pool cabanas (更衣室) for use as outdoor offices, complete with fast Wi-Fi, free parking and catered lunch for $ 150 per day.

C Because all the sounds are becoming over 140 decibels.
D. Because some machines can make noise.
11. Doctors say we can hear ourselves think __________.
A. if we don’t like to hear noise
B. if we have no aches or pains in our bodies
C. if there isn’t too much noise
D. if we can’t be careful of noise
