Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That’s right - during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin.
But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted past them. “Running at an amazing pace,” Cassidy told Runner’s World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!”
At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物) in a backyard.
No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they’d seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site - and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush and right into the arms of campus police, who’d joined the chase shortly behind the runners.
The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. “Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat,” Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities.”
1. Why do the group members gather together
A. To do some stretching. B. To have a regular run.
C. To deliver a lecture. D. To cover some topics.
2. We can infer that the success of the chase is mainly due to ______.
A. the assistance of the runners B. the owner of the row house
C. the campus police on patrol D. the joint efforts of the people
3. Which of the following best describes Cassidy
A. Athletic and generous. B. Courageous and ambitious.
C. Helpful and humorous. D. Thoughtful and demanding.
【答案】1 B 2. D 3. C
根据第一段“The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog(宾夕法尼亚大学的同事和其他社区成员每周聚会三天,进行大约30分钟的慢跑)”可知,团队成员聚集的目的是为了定期跑步,故选B项。
根据第三段“The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物) in a backyard(赛跑选手分开追。卡西迪跑到现场的另一边阻止小偷,而其他人则在附近徘徊,希望他把赃物扔在后院)”以及倒数第二段“As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush and right into the arms of campus police, who’d joined the chase shortly behind the runners.(当店主打开门时,嫌疑人从灌木丛后面冲了出来,直接投入到校园警察的怀抱中,校园警察在跑者后面不久就加入了追捕)”可知,在大家的合力之下成功地抓住了小偷,故选D项。
根据第二段“Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!”(卡西迪发现了为什么这位短跑运动员如此敏捷,这时另一名男子跑过,大喊:“救命!他拿走了我的手机和笔记本电脑!”)”以及第三段“They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site(他们奔跑,在费城的街道上追逐嫌疑人,直到他躲进一个建筑工地)”可推理出卡西迪乐于助人。根据最后一段““Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat,” Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities.”(“跑步通常是一项无用的运动,你会把脂肪细胞转化为热量。”“但偶尔也会有用,这就是其中一个机会。”)”可推理出卡西迪很幽默,故选C项。

In my everyday life, I am on an ongoing journey to figure out different ways to reduce my carbon footprint on the planet. A carbon footprint is the measure of influence our activities have on the environment, in particular climate change. It is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gas we produce in our daily lives. Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices than, let's say, 20 years ago. But one question has been on my mind a lot lately: is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced goods
After doing some research, I have decided that some things are better new and others are better used. Let me try to explain.
A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide(CO2)from the burning of fuels, including household energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use-those related to their production and breakdown.
Based on this understanding, we have a good deal of control and responsibility over our carbon footprint. Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production. However, for the car and the other appliances(设备)that we need we can go with new, energy-saving models. I heard somewhere that electronics and appliances give off 90% of their carbon footprint after they leave the factory. So it seems most reasonable to go for the energy-saving models. The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you.
4. What is the text mainly about
A. What appliances to buy to save energy.
B. What a carbon footprint means in our life.
C. How to identify different carbon footprints.
D. How to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices.
5. What do we know about the secondary carbon footprint
A. It is related to our consumption of fuels.
B. It is made when we are buying the products.
C. It is less harmful than the primary carbon footprint.
D. It is counted as ours though not directly made by us.
6. Which of the following helps reduce our carbon footprint according to the author
A. Using second-hand textbooks. B. Using old and expensive cars.
C. Buying new but cheap clothes. D. Buying new wooden furniture.
7. "The footprint" underlined in the last sentence refers to the CO2 produced in _________.
A. using the product B. recycling the product
C. making the product D. transporting the product
D 5. D 6. A 7. A
文章第一段中“Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices(幸运的是,现在更容易选择环保的生活方式)”以及困扰作者的一个问题“is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced ones (新型环保产品,使用过的传统生产的产品,选择哪一种更好?) ”再根据第二段一整段的内容,作者通过研究得出答案,有些时候是新型环保产品好,有时候是另一种更好。文章接下来的段落就是分析了作者这个答案是怎样找到的。由此可知,文章主要是关于怎样选择更环保的生活方式的。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use-those related to their production and breakdown.(第二种足迹是表示我们使用的产品在整个生命周期中间接排放的二氧化碳,这些是和他们的生产和排放有关的) ”可知,第二种碳足迹虽然不是我们直接产生的,但是也是我们使用的产品释放出来的,也是要归结到我们身上的。
根据第四段中“Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production.” 故选A。
根据第四段中“The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you. (主要问题是这些投入在制造新产品时的能源以及这种额外的碳是否值得它到你手里以后,所产生的碳足迹) ”可知,footprint在其后定语从句the product will make once it gets to you充当make的宾语,意思是“这种碳足迹就是产品到你手里之后,你使用中所产生的”。由此推知,划线词组the footprint指的是“产品使用过程中产生的二氧化碳”。故选A。
C
Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a“vocabulary”of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges.
Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they intentionally sent a message to another group member.
“That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.”
Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices deliberately to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said.
Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signalling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mother’s back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species out there that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter.
Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”.
“The unclearness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,”she said.“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains.”
8. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter
A. Memorizing specific words. B. Understanding complex information.
C. Using voices to communicate. D. Communicating messages on purpose.
9. What did Dr Shultz think of the study
A. It was well designed but poorly conducted.
B. It was a good try but the findings were limited.
C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.
D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.
10. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthrough
B. Chimpanzees developed specific communication skills
C. Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdom
D. Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated
根据第二段“Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they intentionally sent a message to another group member.(她说,只有人类和黑猩猩有一个沟通系统,他们有目的地向另一个群体成员发送信息)”可知,人类和黑猩猩的共同之处是有目的地交流信息,故选D项。
根据倒数第二段“Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”(曼彻斯特大学的进化生物学家苏珊娜·舒尔茨博士表示,这项研究在丰富我们对人类语言进化的知识方面值得称赞。但是,她补充说,结果“有点令人失望”)”可知,苏珊娜·舒尔茨博士认为这项研究这是一次很好的尝试,但发现有限,故选B项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a“vocabulary”of 66 gestures.(研究人员表示,他们已经翻译了野生黑猩猩用来交流的手势的含义。他们说,野生黑猩猩通过66个手势的“词汇表”相互传递19种特定信息)”、第二段“this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they intentionally sent a message to another group member.( 这是动物王国中唯一有记录的有意交流形式。她说,只有人类和黑猩猩有一个沟通系统,他们故意向另一个群体成员发送信息)”、第四段“the animals do not appear to use their voices deliberately to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures( 但这些动物似乎不会故意用声音来传达信息,这是通话和手势之间的显著区别)”以及最后一段“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains.(此外,这些含义似乎并没有超出其他动物通过非语言交流所传达的含义。因此,鸿沟似乎仍然存在)”可知,本文主要讲的是人类对黑猩猩的手势的翻译的研究现状以及存在的问题。由此可知,D项“Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated(黑猩猩语言:交流手势翻译)”适合作本文标题。故选D项。
第二节 语句排序(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
11. 将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D和E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。
A.These activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
B.When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory.
C.When you learn a foreign language, you need to remember lots of words. To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term.
D.Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized. When you put away a book —or memory—you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find the word again.
E.How can you do this The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can write new sentences that include it, or you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is“height”, you can think of the tallest person you know.
【详解】短文首先引出话题,C选项“When you learn a foreign language, you need to remember lots of words. To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term.(当你学习一门外语时,你需要记住很多单词。为了更好地记住单词,你需要了解记忆是如何工作的。记忆有两种:短期记忆和长期记忆。)”能够引出话题,人们在学习外语的时候要记住单词,进而引出记忆单词的两种方式:短期记忆和长期记忆,所以C项列在第一位。
接下来分别介绍短期介绍和长期介绍,B选项“When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory.(当你看到、听到或读到某样东西时,它首先会进入短期记忆。但短期记忆只能持续几秒钟。如果它进入长期记忆,你只会记住更长的时间。)”按照首段列举记忆方式的先后顺序,首先介绍短期记忆,所以B项位列第二。
接下来按照首段列出记忆方式的顺序,继续介绍另一种记忆方式——长期记忆,D选项“Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized. When you put away a book —or memory—you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find the word again.(你的长期记忆就像一个很大的图书馆,有很多很多的书。就像一个图书馆一样,它也很有条理。当你把一本书或记忆放下时,你不能把它放在随便一个地方。你必须选择一个你可以再次找到这个词的地方。)”介绍的是长期记忆的特点,与首段呼应,所以D项排在第三位。
接下来会继续介绍如何才能做到长期记忆,E选项“How can you do this The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can write new sentences that include it, or you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is“height”, you can think of the tallest person you know.(你该怎么做呢?答案是要使用这个词,并以新的方式来思考这个词。你可以写一些包含它的新句子,或者你可以发明一个关于这个词的小故事,和你认识的人或地方在一起。另一种方法是用这个词在你的脑海中想象出来。例如,如果这个词是“身高”,你可以想到你认识的最高的人。)”开篇就引出了本段介绍的是如何做到长期记忆,所以E选项承接了上文中对长期记忆的讲述,所以E选项排在第四位。
最后总结长期记忆对记忆单词的影响,A选项“These activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.(这些活动都是思考单词的好方法。它们使单词的意义在你的长期记忆中更强烈。当你需要的时候,他们就会设法找到一个词。)”与第一段内容呼应,尤其是“这些活动”与上一段中的内容衔接,所以A选项排在第五位。
综上所述,正确的顺序为CBDEA。
第三节 选句填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

“The unclearness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,”she said.“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communication.
