On October 1, 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was officially established. Since its inception, NASA has been interested in exploring outer space. However, in the face of climate change, NASA’s most important task might be its exploration of the earth.
Although it’s not as historic as a moon landing, NASA has been collecting valuable information about the earth for decades-since at least 1968, when Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders took his “Earthrise” photo of the earth from the moon. Soon after, in 1972, NASA launched (发射) the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS). Later known as Landsat 1, it was the first earth-observing satellite to be launched in order to observe and study the earth.
Karen St. Germain, director of NASA’s Earth Science Division, said, “For nearly 50 years, Landsat satellites have provided continuous and timely data, which can help us understand the earth and plan for the future in a changing climate.”
50 years later, Landsat 9 was successfully launched from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base. Landsat 9 features two sensors (传感器) that will measure 11 wavelengths of light appearing on the surface of the earth. The first sensor, a camera known as the Operational Land Imager 2 (OLI-2), will take pictures of the earth. The second, the Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 (TIRS-2), will measure the heat from the earth’s surface.
“Landsat 9 will be our new eyes in the sky when it comes to observing our changing planet,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for science at NASA.“By working with the other Landsat satellites, we’ll have observations of any given place on our planet every two days. This is very important for tracking things like crop growth and helping decision-makers observe the earth and its natural resources.”
“Launches are always exciting, and today was no exception,” said Jeff Masek, NASA Landsat 9 project scientist. “But the best part for me, as a scientist, will be when the satellite starts delivering the data that people are waiting for.”

Mary Lyon was a leader in women’s education in the nineteenth century. It was a time when women’s education was not considered important in the United States. The States did require each town to provide a school for children, but there were not enough teachers. Most young women were not able to continue their education. If they did, they often were not taught much except French, how to sew (缝) clothing, and music.
Mary Lyon felt that women’s education was extremely important. She believed women were teachers both in the home and in the classroom. Mary opened a school for young women in Buckland. She suggested new ways of teaching, including holding discussion groups for students.
Then, Mary began to raise money for her dream school for the higher education of women. This school would own its own property. Its finances would be the responsibility of the directors. It would not depend on any person to continue. And, the students would share in cleaning and cooking to keep costs down.
In 1837, Mary Lyo n founded Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. In 1893, 44 years after her death, under a state law, Mount Holyoke Female Seminary became the first college to offer women the same kind of education as men. Bookstores are fascinating places. That’s because the books on the shelves can take you away to magical lands, help you learn a foreign language, or cook a delicious meal. But when your community is too small to house a real brick bookstore, sometimes you have to make a compromise. A mobile bookstore that brings books around the country was the result. That is the case for Rita Collins, 70, who dreamed of opening a used bookstore after retiring from teaching.
A business planning class from the American Booksellers Association convinced Collins to abandon her idea that opening a bookstore in the small town where she lives, which would not be sustainable. Eureka, Montana, located just seven miles from the Canadian border, only has a population of 1,517. Collins asked her instructors about a traveling bookstore on wheels and they were skeptical. But she persevered.
Collins was inspired by Dylans Mobile Bookstore, a traveling bookstore in Wales run by Jeff Towns. She contacted Jeff for advice but she was largely on her own when it came to building her bookstore. First, she had to find a vehicle large enough to stand in. Then she had to have it refitted with shelves that would hold the books at a 15-degree angle so that they would stay in place while in transit. Collins named her bookstore St Rita’s Traveling Bookstore, which has been on the road since 2015.
At first, she drove through Montana and then she made her first cross-country trip in 2016. After she retired in 2017, it became a full-time job all year round. Collins and her mobile bookstore have visited 30 states, stopping at festivals and events along the way. While the locations change, some things always stay the same. Collins loves meeting people and making connections. While she loves what she does, Collins doesn’t think she can keep doing it. In several years, she hopes to pass her traveling bookstore onto another bibliophile who shares the same interest and will keep it on the road.

A.It would cost a lot of money. B.It was not promising.

Thin, average, and undisciplined, I was the underdog of the boys’ basketball tryouts (选拔赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me. Although I was extremely nervous, I truly thought I would make the team. But I went in overly optimistic, and quickly faced a cruel reality check.
When on the court, I huffed and puffed like an old man on his last legs; clearly, I was out of shape and having trouble keeping up. When it hit me that this was only the first day, and that there was a second to follow, I realized I would have to step it up in order to gain a spot on the team.
Unfortunately, day two went exactly like day one: I missed shots, passed badly like an out-of-breath fool. Hoping the coach was not watching all my bad moves, I had trouble keeping a positive attitude. Finally, Coach-who at five-foot-four usually seemed small, posted the lists of the Boys A and B Teams. Everybody quickly ran to catch a glimpse of the chosen few.
After scanning the list once, twice, three times, my name was nowhere. Although I had predicted the disaster that had now settled on me, with my head hanging. I slowly walked to the car. This experience definitely had not gone as I planned.
On the way home, I complained “How could that foolish boy is a better choice than me And…”
“Adam!” my mom cut me off. “Why don’t you realize maybe you need a little more practice You’d better go to basketball camps next summer.”
Although I did not want to believe her, I knew it was true. Failing to make the team was nobody’s fault but mine. Right then and there, in the middle of my anger, I realized I had to get my act together.

67. Then I threw myself into as many basketball opportunities as I could find. Every day, I insisted on running 10 kilometers and jumping ropes 1000 times after school to increase my energy level and physical strength. Additionally, I practiced passing, dribbling and shooting with my friends every day to improve my basketball skills. When the summer holidays came, I signed up for a basketball camp, where I got a lot of professional basketball knowledge and training from the coaches. Gradually, I found myself making great progress.
When I took part in the eighth-grade basketball tryouts, I was moderate, swift and strong. When on the court, I kept running without any trouble, dribbling freely and passing the basketball accurately. As long as I got the chance, I would try to shoot. One, two, three… I scored ten goals at last. There was no doubt that I succeeded in becoming a member of the basketball team. It was my determination and efforts that helped me achieve my dream.
