Matthew has retired. He used to be working in a sawmill (锯木厂). Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused his fingers to be injured and bleed all year round. Outside his job, he enjoyed watching baseball games and he was glad that he had more time for it after he retired. In Matthew’s eyes, baseball was a game including details, mental sharpness, and great patience, and he thought instructing young men needed the same abilities.
There were boys on the high school baseball team playing in the neighborhood and Matthew was their regular visitor. Whether on summer evenings under the lights or in the mid-afternoon sun, he was always the one to appear on time. In the beginning, he simply sat and watched them. After a good play, Matthew would give them a praising sign, and a mistake would earn his smile, which meant, “You’ll get another chance!” He communicated with the boys in such a way.
Gradually, the boys got used to Matthew’s presence and became familiar with him. They were curious about his tough hands. He talked about his adventures of working in the forest. They were long and inspiring stories, all about friendship, helping each other, and remaining hopeful even though experiencing hardship, and also about how a boy grew into a man.
Matthew would take time to show them some basic skills to some slow learners and took the trouble to repeat each detail until the players were skillful. What Matthew taught was deeply rooted in the boys’hearts and they could play wonderfully in the races.
Time flew. Matthew thought he was too old to teach them anything. It was time for him to leave. However, the boys told Matthew that his fighting spirit had long been part of their team. Nearly everyone on the team learned to expect a little more from themselves as long as Matthew was there.
4. What did Matthew think of the baseball game
A. It took plenty of patience. B. It needed a lot of strength.
C. It must be based on interest. D. It called for sharp movements.
5. How did Matthew exchange with the boys at first
A. By joining them in playing baseball.
B. By teaching them some special skills.
C. By sharing his past about playing baseball.
D. By encouraging them with body language.
6. What influence did Matthew have on the boys
A He developed the children’s love for the forests.
B. He taught them the skills of making good friends.
C. He helped them keep positive during their growth.
D. He made them learn to search for new adventures.
7. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Matthew’s skills weren’t recognized by the boys.
B. Matthew’s quality would always inspire the boys.
C. The boys thought Matthew became less patient later.
D. The boys learned more baseball skills from Matthew.

Two car manufacturing companies in the US have been developing self-driving taxis, sometimes called “robotaxis”. Before August, their cars have had a human in the driver’s seat, ready to take over if there was a problem, and they could only drive in specific areas, at certain times. In early August, they weren’t required to have safety drivers in their cars. They are programmed to do everything on their own, including obeying the rules of the road, following speed limits, and avoiding people and other cars.
The move was a big step for self-driving cars, and many people were excited about the change. But almost immediately, there were problems coming along. A self-driving car crashed into a fire truck, causing a person seriously injured. Later, another one failed to work in the middle of a crossroad, causing a traffic jam. As a result, the two companies were told to take half of its robotaxis off the roads.
In one recent example, a self-driving car got stuck in wet concrete (混凝土) because it didn’t know that wet concrete was different from a road. In another case, a robotaxi killed a dog. The self-driving system knew the dog was there, but didn’t know how to avoid it. Most people believe that self-driving cars aren’t ready for the real world. Those who are upset about self-driving cars have found an unusual way to be against them: putting traffic cones (路锥) on the hoods (引擎盖) of robotaxis, which can confuse the cars’driving system and leave them unable to move.
In spite of the problems, both companies are planning to expand their self-driving car service to other cities. One of them says its driverless system will soon be able to work in any city, on any kind of vehicle. Though the quality of self-driving cars is improving, it’s likely to be a while before most people view them as safe.
8. What was the biggest change to the robotaxis recently
A. They are limited in their speed.
B. They must obey the traffic rules.
C. They can work at certain times of a day.
D. They can drive without a human driver.
9. What problem has happened to robotaxis
A. They killed a person in an accident.
B. They couldn’t avoid the traffic cones.
C. They sometimes broke down on the roads.
D. They often failed to recognize the directions.
10. How do most people feel robotaxis
A. Concerned. B. Supportive. C. Curious. D. Uncaring.
11. Which is the best title for the text
A. Robotaxis struggled to survive, but failed finally
B. Robotaxis move forward, but far from satisfaction
C. Robotaxis driven by a perfect self-driving system
D. Robotaxis expanding to more cities in America
D
Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However, a Tennessee zoo made headlines recently after it welcomed one of the world’s most uncommon giraffes.
On July 31, a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated (网状的) giraffe, one of the four different kinds of giraffes. Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. At six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother’s care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such as eating rocks.
Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan. A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.
“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. Being single-colored, she may not be able to hide quite as well,” said Mr. David Bright, who runs the zoo, “It will easily be a key target for poachers (偷猎者) because she’s so unusual.”
Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain.
This brown giraffe’s birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. By supporting efforts like this, we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.
12. What do we know about the spots of giraffes
A. They help protect giraffes. B. They are the same pattern.
C. They look like giraffes’ footprints. D. They appear on giraffes occasionally.
13. What makes the young giraffe born at Brights Zoo special
A. Its extremely large size. B. Its light brown fur.
C. Its unusual eating habit. D. Its absence of spots.
14. What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in paragraph 5
A. Recognized. B. Endangered. C. Doubled. D. Balanced.
15. Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe
A. Awkward. B. Worrying. C. Meaningful. D. Foreseeable.

This year, I visited Ancoats Canal (运河) in Manchester with my two friends, Jack and Ben. where we could film lots of beautiful scenes. At the end of the visit, we managed to seek out a place to have a rest. Suddenly, we saw a man lying and struggling with a leash (狗链) over a wall. When we got closer. we realized the man was in trouble. At that time, I just took my camera to film some beautiful scenes.
The man held tightly to the leash to try to keep his dog from being dragged away. The dog fell into the canal. struggling to catch the leash. Obviously, the man was panicking (惊慌). With the camera putting on the wall, we quickly jumped in to help. We couldn’t let that dog down and not help. I climbed down the canal first. However, the wall of the canal was too high, so I was not enough to get the dog. We noticed the man in pain and the dog desperately moved his back legs in search of the ground.
Finally, my friend, Jack, was seized by a sudden inspiration.
“I am the tallest of us. I am dangled(悬挂)upside down by the legs and you can drag my legs so I could reach the dog,” Jack said excitedly.

A. He developed the children’s love for the forests.

A. Concerned. B. Supportive. C. Curious. D. Uncaring.

14 What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in paragraph 5
A. Recognized. B. Endangered. C. Doubled. D. Balanced.
15. Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe
A. Awkward. B. Worrying. C. Meaningful. D. Foreseeable.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

I am sorry to hear that you have been ill for days. As an exchange student, you have been so absorbed in study. It is really harmful to your health. I feel it more beneficial to your health if you could take more exercise in the future.
In fact, exercise can contribute to your health and refresh your mind. Only when you have a strong body can you keep on studying. Otherwise, your study will be interrupted from time to time by sickness.

Dogs can do so much for us, whether they’re service dogs that can help with mental health problems or search and rescue dogs saving lives during a natural disaster. However, sometimes dogs are the ones who need a helping hand from us.
“That is a good idea,” the man said happily.

【答案】范文:
We carried out our plan immediately. Jack was dangled upside down by the legs and we dragged his legs so that he could lower into the canal and then get hold of the dog’s collar with his right hand, and placed his left hand under the dog’s front legs for support. Jack was then pulled up by us, and the dog was safe and sound. The crowd who had gathered around clapped and cheered for us. Afterwards, both the dog and the owner were so happy that they ran around the canal in celebration. At the same time, I realized my camera had filmed the whole event. All of us felt excited.
The video of the moving rescue was posted online after we came back home. We found it had raised much attention and many people watched it and left comments. It has earned over75,000 likes, with dozens praising the efforts of us who put ourselves in danger to save the dog, which made us surprised and delighted. It was a precious experience and left us with wonderful memories. We only did what anyone else would do.
