There is a famous story about how Walt Disney was inspired to build Disneyland. The story goes that during an afternoon visit to Griffith Park located near the Burbank Studios, Walt took a seat while his two young daughters rode the merry-go-round. Walt thought there should be a place where both children and their parents could enjoy spending some time together in an environment that would be both entertaining and pleasing to the eye, so with this thought came the idea for Disneyland.
Walt’s original plan was to build an eight-acre park located near the Burbank Studios that would be a place for his employees and their families. Those plans were put on hold because of the start of World War II. By 1952, Walt had created a special department that was devoted to planning his dream.
Finally in 1953, the first steps in building the park happened when Walt employed the Stanford Research Institute to make a survey to determine the best possible location for the future park. Considering population growth and the future freeway construction (建设), they finally found a location in Anaheim and 160 acres of land were bought for the site of the new park.
The building of the park was very expensive and to collect money for the project, Walt developed the idea of the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” television show. It turned out to be a marvelous idea—not only gaining the money to build the park but also presenting the park to the American public.
Construction officially began on July 21, 1954, and it was an ambitious (野心勃勃的) building schedule of less than one year to complete the new park for the projected opening day. Walt watched over the park’s construction and progress continued with just a few minor hold-ups. Finally, the park was ready for the Opening Day on July 17, 1955.

The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test. “You have passed the test,” he said. “Give me your e-mail address and I’ll send you the form to fill in and the date when you may start.” The man answered, “But I don’t have a computer, neither an e-mail.” “I’m sorry,” said the HR manager. “If you don’t have an e-mail, that means you are not living. And anyone who isn’t living cannot have the job.”
The man left with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do, with only 10 dollars in his pocket. He thought and thought. Then he went to the supermarket and bought 10 kilos of tomatoes. He sold the tomatoes from door to door. In less than two hours, he had 20 dollars. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home with 60 dollars. The man came to know that he could make money in this way, and started to go early every day, and returned home late. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles (运货车队). Five years later, the man was one of the biggest food retailers (零售商) in the US.
One day, one of his friends asked him for his e-mail. He said, “I haven’t got one.” His friend couldn’t believe his ears. “Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e-mail ” The man thought for a while and answered, “Yes, I’d be an office boy at Microsoft!”

C. The HR manager didn’t find the ability of the man.
D. Nothing in the world is impossible if we work hard.

We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water youdidn’t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true
According to Time, of course not, taste has little to do with quality of water.
According to Time, when water is exposed to the air for 12 hours, carbon dioxide interacts with the H O in the water, and the pH value lowers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.
“But it’s most likely safe to drink,” Norwegian expert Truls Krogh told Science Nordic. “If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That’s because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health.”
People in countries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. According to Time, if tap water is drunk within six months, the chlorine (氯气) in the water will be enough to kill any bacteria and keep it safe to drink.
However, there are also some exceptions. If you accidentally put your fingers into water or store water in unclean containers day after day, microorganism (微生物) will enter the water.
With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. Sooner or later, the water will be in the charge of the unfriendly bacteria. And if you drink the water too often, then you’re more likely to be ill.
And what about water in plastic bottles Heat and plastic are a bad combination, US researcher Kellogg Schwab stresses. When plastic bottles are used at high temperatures, they produce a chemical called BPA. BPA is something that affects hormones (荷尔蒙) and research has tentatively linked it to “several health damage, including heart disease and cancer”, Time reported.
Schwab suggests replacing disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles with the refillable containers made of metal or glass to deal with BPA.
32. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.
A. show an example. B. draw a conclusion.
C. analyze a phenomenon. D. introduce a topic.
33. Which of the following may Truls Krogh agree
A. If the water tastes different, we shouldn’t drink it.
B. The water held in a clean container is likely safe to drink.
C. Although kept fresh, water may still have much organic matter.
D. Covered water can last for a thousand years.
34. What can we infer from the passage
A. BPA does little harm to our health.
B. Tap water is always safe to drink.
C. Microorganisms are easy to produce in the heat.
D. Disposable plastic bottles have been banned already.
35. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Why Water is Tasteless. B. How to Get Clean Water.
C. Does Water Really Go Bad D. Learn to Protect Water.

Not knowing they were poor, the kids just thought their mother was strict in money management. Melissa was really glad about that.
Christmas was just around the corner. Although there wasn’t budget for a lot of gifts, Melissa planned to please the kids with a family party. She prepared weeks ahead of time, asking one by one what the kids wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, Melissa managed to spare $80 dollars for the whole family to enjoy the fun of Christmas shopping.
The big day arrived. Mellissa drove the kids to a nearby Walmart and gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill. “Now, my children,” she announced, “you have two hours to pick a gift in the supermarket. Then we will meet back at the gate.” Excited, the children scattered (四散) and rushed into the supermarket.

Driving home, everyone was talking about their gifts in high spirits except the youngest daughter, Ginger. Feeling puzzled, Melissa asked what she had bought for Christmas. “Nothing.” Ginger whispered, lowering her head. Other kids stopped talking and turned to Ginger. “Are you kidding Did you lose your money ” They stared at the little girl, their faces lighting up with surprise. Ginger shook her head and said that she gave the bill to a man who was begging outside the supermarket. The man in rags was standing in cold weather. There was no doubt that he was homeless and had a hard time.
“We have so much, but the homeless man doesn't have anything,” Ginger explained. “I am willing to share my happiness with him. I hope he can buy warm clothes or treat himself to a good dinner.” She added, with eyes shining with excitement. Hearing her daughters’ words, Melissa felt a sense of pride swept through her. “What you did is right, Ginger. You are such a kind child that we are proud of you,” she said. Arriving home, they had a small party and the other kids offered to share their gifts with Ginger. It was the special experience that made the kids realize sharing is important.
