As early as 1894, the newly formed International Olympic Committee(IOC) considered ice skating as a possibility for the first modern Olympic Games which would be held in 1896.
In 1911, a member of the IOC suggested that winter sports should be staged as part of the 1912Olympics in Stockholm. Some opposed the idea. At last, the IOC decided to hold Winter Olympic Games in 1916. However, World War I broke out in 1914. After 1920, the national governing bodies for winter sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics.
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned to hold a winter sports festival in 1924; at the same time Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the IOC, suggested that the festival be formally recognized as the “Winter Olympic Games”. The IOC didn't go that far, but did agree that Chamonix could call its festival an “Olympic Winter Carnival”.
The festival drew 258 athletes from 16 countries to compete in bobsledding (雪橇比赛),figure-skating, hockey, Nordic skiing and speed skating. Charles Jewtraw from the United States won the first gold medal in the 500-metre speed skating, but the festival's hero was Claus Thunberg from Finland. He won five medals, three of which were gold in speed skating.
Weather has often been a major story at the Winter Olympics and so it was at Chamonix. The festival opened with rain and the unseasonably warm temperature turned snow and ice to mud. Then temperature dropped as far as 25 below zero and the mud became ice.
Despite the weather, more than 10,000 people showed up. In 1926, the IOC recognized the Chamonix festival as the first Winter Olympics and decided that the Winter Games would be held every four years, just like the Summer Olympics.
28. Why were the first Winter Olympic Games not held in 1916
A. Because the IOC didn't agree to it. B. Because it was still under discussion.
C. Because World War I broke out in 1914. D. Because some people disliked the idea.
29. We can know from the passage that_________.
A. economy has often been a major story at the Winter Olympics
B. people from 16 countries watched the first Winter Olympics
C. Charles Jewtraw won the most medals in the first Winter Olympics
D. Finland got 3 gold medals in speed skating in the first Winter Olympics
30. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. The Winter Olympics depend much more on the weather.
B. The 1924 Winter Olympics and Summer Olympics were held in the same city.
C. The Winter Olympics were held every two years in the beginning.
D. The IOC agreed to recognize the festival as the first Winter Olympics in 1924.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. The development of the speed skating. B. How the Winter Olympics came into being.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, as a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they start worrying, it actually uses up their attention and memory resources(资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers were given ten minutes to write about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a bi ology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, and who'd done our writing intervention(干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and grades. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
32. What do the students start worrying about before an exam
A. Whether they can pass the exams. B. What other students do during the test.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials. D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
33. What is the solution developed by researchers
A. Making the students focused on the test.
B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C. Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
34. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test.
A. became less nervous after the test
B. were better at controlling their feelings
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit.
B. We can only write about our worries right before an exam.
C. The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.
D. It doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam.

There was a girl named Emily. Although her singing was pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never sings in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I'm afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It's okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mom's ad vice and decided to have a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What's worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics(歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward(胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!” Emily didn't argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl, don't cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily told her mother what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn't matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don't be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”

Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mom's suggestion. The next day, she began to practice singing outside. Gradually, her courage became greater and greater, and the sound of her singing was also louder and louder. Months later, she could sing as she was walking. A naughty boy who had laughed at her before cried to her, “Emily, coward! Emily, coward!” However, she chose to ignore his behavior.
Going on singing, she walked into the park. Many people were singing and dancing. Hearing her beautiful voice, some stopped to listen to her singing and clapped for her. A grandma smiled to her and said, “Oh, little girl, you sing really well!” Emily said thanks to her. Emily felt pleased that she could sing confidently in front of strangers. The second year, the neighborhood held the singing competition again. This time, Emily walked onto the stage bravely, and her loud and beautiful voice of singing moved all the people. Hello, everyone. I'd like to tell you something about the student clubs in our school. Let's begin with our reading club. It was first started in 2008, and has 90 members now. Every Thursday afternoon, students gather together to exchange their ideas on books. And you may join them to share your views. If you are a music lover, come to our music club. This club has a total of 85 members. They usually meet on Saturday. Sometimes they go to concerts together and sometimes they give performance by themselves. For those who enjoy outdoor sports, bicycle club can be a good choice. Trips are usually organized on Wednesday and last at least two hours. Together with our 50 cyclists, you can not only see the beautiful nature, but also make yourself stronger. Of course, there are also many other clubs in our school.
