Doss said the flight last month from Washington, D. C. to Madrid was not only the first time he and his mom had worked on a flight together, but also the first time his mom had been on a flight that he piloted.
“That was the first time I had been able to fly my mom ever,” he said. “In flight school, she was a little nervous about the small planes, so I was never able to fly with her there.” Doss said his mom typically works on Asia-bound flights, but when she learned he was piloting a flight to Spain, she switched (调班) schedules with a fellow flight attendant so she could be on the same flight.
On the day of the flight, Doss, having been a United Airlines pilot since February 2022, and his mom also worked on the return flight back to Washington, D. C. together. “I wanted to do something special to pay back my mom and let everyone know that this was a really cool event for both of us,” he said.

Some of the world’s best Coffea arabica is grown on Mount Kenya. This variety of the plant produces beans that are tastier than those from its poor cousin, Coffea canephora (known as robusta), which often ends up in instant coffee However, global warming may reduce the total area that is most suited to growing arabica beans by about half by 2050.
Some farmers are trying to adapt to warming by moving uphill. Yet this pushes them into areas long used for growing tea. Not only is there less space higher up; the move stresses how warming also threatens to harm the tea crop, which supports about 10% of Kenya’s population. Warmer weather will push tea itself higher up area.
Kenya’s government-funded Coffee Research Institute is trying to find other ways of helping farmers adapt, such as encouraging them to plant trees to shade their coffee bushes, or to grow hardier (适应性更强) robusta plants. It is also trying to plant a hybrid, Arabusta, which would combine the hardiness of robusta with the flavour of arabica. Coffee snobs may turn up their noses at it, but they may have no other choices.
However, such adaptations may bring social costs. Many smallholder farmers are at risk of being pushed out of the industry altogether because they cannot afford the money needed to protect their crops.
Another option may be entirely new varieties. Researchers in London are studying a wild type of coffee, Coffea stenophylla. It is delicious and can also take the heat. But it produces lower harvest than existing varieties and it may be years before it is widely grown. Without a breakthrough of some sort, caffeine addicts may face a future too unpleasant to imagine. “If we don’t have the innovation (创新) to respond to climate challenges,” Vern Long of World Coffee Research says, “we’re just going to be drinking man-made coffee.”
8. In what way is Coffea arabica better than Coffea robusta
A. Flavor. B. Harvest. C. Hardiness. D. Sales.
9. What does the underlined “it” refer to in Paragraph 3
A. Robusta. B. Arabica. C. Arabusta. D. Stenophylla.
10. What might be the impact of the government’s policy
A. Good money will be brought in.
B. The areas of tea crop will be reduced.
C. The cost of coffee-planting may drop.
D. Smallholder coffee farmers may disappear.
11. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To give suggestions to coffee farmers.
B. To recommend new varieties of coffee.
C. To introduce coffee industry under threat.
D. To list possible solutions to climate changes.

The 37-year-old artist, Kelly McKernan, from Nashville, Tennessee calls her works “surreal (超现实的)”. She says they are “dealing with discomfort in the human journey”. Living as an artist is difficult enough. Now McKernan faces another challenge: artificial intelligence (AI).
About a year ago, McKernan began seeing online images (图像) strangely similar to her own. She soon learned that companies were feeding artwork into AI systems to train software programs to create similar images. McKernan said, “I didn’t give my agreement for my name or works to be used this way.”
McKernan said she even tried to contact some of the companies to say “Hey, little artist here, I know you’re not thinking of me at all, but it would be really cool if you didn’t use my work like this.” But there was no answer.
In January, McKernan, and two other artists, Karla Ortiz and Sarah Andersen, started action by law against three image-generator companies: Stability AI, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney. They also included the online gallery DeviantArt in the case.
The artists are seeking to protect their copyrighted works and their careers. They say the AI image-generators violate (侵犯) the rights of millions of artists by using their artworks for training and then producing similar works that compete against the originals (原作). The artists are seeking damages and a court order to stop AI companies from using their works without being allowed.
Karla Ortiz works in the entertainment industry. Her work has been used in several well-known movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Jurassic World. She feared that film companies would think artworks from artists cost too much. Why, she asked, would film companies buy artworks from artists if they can pay $30 a month for AI-created works
McKernan agreed: “Will I even have any work a year from now ”
12. What troubles artist Kelly McKernan
A. The great similarity in her works.
B. The competition among the artists.
C. Her works being recreated without her agreement.
D. Her customers’ increasingly high requirements.
13. How were McKernan’s words dealt with by some of the companies in paragraph 3
A. They were treated properly. B. They were given timely attention.
C. They were regarded as impolite. D. They were answered with silence.
14 What may make film companies use AI-created works according to Karla Ortiz
A. Their low prices. B. Their better quality.
C. Their higher safety. D. Their good service.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Human Artists Lose Their Jobs B. Artists Fight Back Against AI
C. Artworks Can Be Created by AI D. Artists Should Accept AI Works

14. What may make film companies use AI-created works according to Karla Ortiz
A Their low prices. B. Their better quality.
C. Their higher safety. D. Their good service.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Human Artists Lose Their Jobs B. Artists Fight Back Against AI
C. Artworks Can Be Created by AI D. Artists Should Accept AI Works
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第二段“About a year ago, McKernan began seeing online images(图像) strangely similar to her own. She soon learned that companies were feeding artwork into AI systems to train software programs to create similar images. McKernan said, ‘I didn’t give my agreement for my name or works to be used this way’(大约一年前,McKernan开始在网上看到与自己的画相似的奇怪图片。她很快了解到有公司正在将艺术作品输入人工智能系统,以训练软件程序来创造类似的图像。McKernan说:‘我没有同意这样使用我的名字或作品。’)”可知,McKernan在网上看到与自己绘画作品相似的图,一些公司将艺术作品输入人工智能系统,从而训练软件程序创造风格类似的画,但McKernan并没有允许他们这么做。由此可推测出,她感到困扰的是她的作品未经她的允许而被复制。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“McKernan said she even tried to contact some of the companies to say ‘Hey, little artist here, I know you’re not thinking of me at all, but it would be really cool if you didn’t use my work like this.’ But there was no answer.(McKernan说,她甚至试图联系一些公司说:‘嘿,这里的小艺术家,我知道你根本没有想到我,但如果你不这样使用我的作品,那就太酷了。’但是没有得到答复)”可知,她给一些公司联系并反映自己的意见,但没有得到回复,故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段的“She feared that film companies would think artworks from artists cost too much. Why, she asked, would film companies buy artworks from artists if they can pay $30 a month for AI-created works (她担心电影公司会认为使用艺术家作品的费用太高。她问道,如果电影公司可以每月支付30美元购买人工智能创作的作品,为什么还要买艺术家的艺术作品呢?)”可知,Karla Ortiz认为,艺术家的作品花费多,如果能花30美元买人工智能创作的作品,可能就没有电影公司园艺花大价钱买艺术家的作品。由此可推测出,人工智能创作的作品价格低廉,这是电影公司可能使用它们的原因。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据第四段的“In January, McKernan, and two other artists, Karla Ortiz and Sarah Andersen, started action by law against three image-generator companies(1月份,McKernan和另外两位艺术家Karla Ortiz和Sarah Andersen开始对三家图像生成公司采取法律行动)”和第五段的“The artists are seeking to protect their copyrighted works and their careers.(艺术家们正在寻求保护他们的版权作品和他们的事业)”可知,文章主要谈论的是画家Kelly McKernan联合另外两位画家对三家图像生成公司提出诉讼,以此来捍卫自己被人工智能图像生成器侵犯的权益。
