Gerty Cori, the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, was born Gerty Theresa Radnitz in Prague in 1896. Gerty decided at the age of sixteen to study medicine. She entered the Realgymnasium at Tetschen, from which she graduated in 1914, and then went to the Medical School of the German University of Prague. While in medical school, Gerty met Carl Cori, a classmate who shared both her love of skiing and mountain climbing and her interest in laboratory research. In 1920, the two published the results of their first joint research, received their medical degrees, and married each other.
Gerty’s first research position was as an assistant in the Karolinen Children’s Hospital in Vienna. In 1922, Carl Cori moved to the United States to join the staff of the New York State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases in Buffalo, New York. Gerty Cori moved a few months later, starting as an assistant pathologist ( 病理学家) at the Institute and later rising to an assistant biochemist. In 1928, the Coris became US citizens.
In 1931, Carl Cori accepted the position of chairman of the Department of Pharmacology of the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM), while Gerty Cori was hired as a research fellow. In the early 1940s the Coris moved to the Department of Biological Chemistry. Gerty Cori was made an associate ( 副) professor of Research Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology in 1943. She was elevated to the rank ( 级别) of professor of Biological Chemistry in July 1947, the same year she and her husband were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work on the metabolism of glycogen (糖代谢).
In 1947, Gerty Cori began showing the signs of myelofibrosis, an unusual blood disease. She fought the disease for ten years, refusing to give up her research until the last few months of her life. Gerty Cori died on October 26, 1957.

When Alex Petrie went to stay with his father he noticed that the 75-year-old walked around several times during the night. This was worrying: his father lived alone and had recently been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia
“I was feeling quite nervous about it and wondered if he was doing it every night,” says Petrie. “It‘s not nice to think that he's worried or can't sleep properly.”
But Petrie had recently installed (安装) a smart home system, Howz, in his father's flat. It uses sensors to track movements, feeding the data into an app that family members and close friends can access. Once the Howz system has analysed and established someone's habitual way of doing things, it will send alerts (警报) to the app if there are any changes. For example, if a sensor usually senses movement before 8 am each day — signalling the time the person normally gets up — an alert will be sent if there has been no movement by that time. Relatives can then call in to make sure everything is okay.
Using the app, Petrie could see that his father usually got a good night’s sleep and very rarely walked about during the night. With this knowledge, he was able to provide the right kind of support and care when his father did have a sleepless night.
Howz, which was developed by Intelesant, a Manchester-based health tech company, aims to help people live independently in their own homes and provide peace of mind for their relatives.
Petrie set up two sensors in his father’s flat: one on the front door and another in the hall. “The door sensor is important as I can see whether his carers have visited. It doesn’t tell me who has visited but it’s easy to find out by the time of the day. The sensor in the hall covers the most commonly used area of the flat. It gives us a near-continuous view of whether he's up and about. It’s a little safety net,” says Petrie.
8. What was the problem with Petrie’s father
A. He insisted on living alone.
B. He didn't like the care home.

D. He sometimes couldn’t fall asleep at night.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How Howz works.
B. How Howz is tested.
C. Who invented Howz.
D. Why Howz was created.
10. What does Petrie think of Howz
A. It isn’t privacy-friendly.
B. It isn’t safe enough.
C. It is quite helpful.
D. It is big business.
11. What does the author want to tell us in the text
A. Tech shortens the distance between people.

Many of you know that when we are under stress, our brain requires a certain amount of hand-to-body touching. However, when circumstances are not only stressful but threaten us, the brain causes certain neck behaviors, which are protective, relieving and totally unique.
I first observed the significance of neck behaviors early in my life when my grandmother was almost hit by a car in Miami Beach. At that instant, she immediately covered her neck with her hand. I was surprised that her hand went to her neck and not toward the car.
At university, I saw this same behavior in anatomy (解剖学) classes as we examined animals. Both men and women would cover their necks as they looked down at the smelly animals for the first time. But I also noticed that men and women did it differently. Men tended to grab (抓住) their necks more robustly (用力地), or even massage (按揉) their necks. Women tended to respond conversely. They would do it more delicately (优雅地), using their fingers to cover a very specific area.
Aware that when people are troubled, scared, concerned, worried, or nervous, they cover or touch their necks, I never appreciated the potential use of this very telling behavior until I joined the FBI.
In 1979, while working in Yuma, Arizona, my partner and I went to talk to the mother of a dangerous person. When we knocked on her door, she seemed tense but allowed us in. I asked her many questions about her son and she answered all of them without hesitation.
However, when I inquired, “Is your son in the house ” during that interview, she put her hand to her neck and said, “No, he’s not.” Her body was speaking to me more honestly than her words. The words “son” and “house” together were a threat to her and she touched her neck in the same way my grandmother had done 14 years earlier. That early lesson taught me to pay attention to the neck because few people do.
12. What did the author’s grandmother do when a car was running toward her
A. She placed her hand on her neck. B. She showed her hand to the driver.
C. .She cried out loud. D. She was glued to the spot frightened.
13. What does the underlined word “conversely” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Directly. B. Properly. C. Emotionally. D. Oppositely
14. What can we infer about the mother of the dangerous person
A. Her words showed hesitation.
B. Her neck behavior gave her away.
C. She was completely honest with the author.
D. She was perfectly calm under great threat.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. To show body language secrets of the neck.
B. To describe how officers use body language to detect lying.
C. To introduce different types of body language.
D. To explain why men and women react differently to stress.
A 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第二段中的“I first observed the significance of neck behaviors early in my life when my grandmother was almost hit by a car in Miami Beach. At that instant, she immediately covered her neck with her hand. (我第一次观察到脖子行为的意义是在我年轻时,当时我的祖母在迈阿密海滩差点被车撞到。那一刻,她立即用手捂住了脖子。)”可知,当汽车朝作者祖母撞去的时候,祖母立刻用手捂住了脖子。故选A。
根据第三段中的“But I also noticed that men and women did it differently. (但我也注意到,男性和女性的做法不同。)”可知,男性和女性把手放在脖子上的方式不同。再根据第三段中的“Men tended to grab (抓住) their necks more robustly (用力地), or even massage (按揉) their necks. (男性往往更用力地抓脖子,甚至按摩脖子。)”和“They would do it more delicately (优雅地), using their fingers to cover a very specific area. (她们会更优雅地做,用手指覆盖一个非常特定的区域。)”可知,男性用力抓脖子和女性优雅地抓脖子是两种相反的行为。由此可推测出,conversely意为“相反地”,与oppositely意思最接近。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“However, when I inquired, ‘Is your son in the house ’ during that interview, she put her hand to her neck and said, ‘No, he’s not.’ Her body was speaking to me more honestly than her words. (然而,在那次面谈中,当我问‘你儿子在家吗?’时,她把手放在脖子上说:‘不,他不在。’她的身体对我说的话比她的话要更诚实。)”可知,当作者询问她的儿子是否在家时,这个女士一边说不在家一边把手放在脖子上,作者通过她的肢体动作明白了真正的答案,她的这一脖子行为出卖了她。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“However, when circumstances are not only stressful but threaten us, the brain causes certain neck behaviors, which are protective, relieving and totally unique. 故选A。

Chemical Versus Organic Farming
Chemical pesticides and artificial ______21______have been in widespread use in farming since the middle of the 20th century. When they were first introduced, many farmers welcomed them as a great way to fight crop disease and increase production. Over time, however, what some scientists have found is that their long-term use can sometimes harm both the land and people’s health.
For example, pesticides can damage the land by killing not only harmful bacteria and insects, but also helpful ones. _____22_____, these chemicals can stay in the soil and underground water sources for a long time. This affects the crops _____23_____ on the land and, in turn, the animals and humans who digest them. Many people worry that these chemicals may make them ill and even cause cancer. In fact, some pesticides like DDT have been prohibited in most countries because of the damage they cause to people and the environment. As for chemical fertilisers, crops grown with them usually grow too fast to be rich in _____24_____. They may look beautiful on the outside, but inside there is usually more water than ____25____ minerals, and they often have less flavour as well.
As an alternative, some farmers have _______26_______ organic farming, and many customers have turned to organic food when they shop at the local grocery. Organic farming is simply farming without using any chemicals. Organic farmers ______27______ keeping their soil rich and free of disease through natural means. For example, many organic farmers use _______28_______ from animals as fertiliser. This makes the soil in their fields richer in ______29______. It also keeps the air, soil, water, and crops ________30________.
Organic farmers also use many other methods to produce rich soil. They often change the kind of crop grown in each field every year. For instance, they may grow corn or wheat in a field one year, and then grow beans there the next. Why different crops are grown is because they put important minerals back into the ground, making it ready again for the next batch of crops. Organic farmers also plant diverse crops that used different ______31______ of soil to help keep it rich. For example, peanuts grow on the ground’s surface, but many other vegetables put down deep roots. The goal of using different organic farming methods is to grow good food while _______32_______ damage to the environment or to people’s health.
Some people would prefer to stop the use of manmade chemicals in agriculture entirely. What keeps them from doing so is the fact that chemical farming ______33______ the high demand for food around the world. Organic farming is nowhere near able to _____34_____ that need. ______35______, there is still a long way to find a suitable solution that puts sufficient food on the dinner table while keeping people and the environment as healthy as possible.

When Alex Petrie went to stay with his father, he noticed that the 75-year-old walked around several times during the night.

A. It isn’t privacy-friendly.
B. It isn’t safe enough.
C. It is quite helpful.

11. What does the author want to tell us in the text

Many of you know that when we are under stress our brain requires a certain amount of hand-to-body touching.
