The whale, as big as a locomotive (火车头), jumped out of the water, spinning (旋转) as though for joy, before jumping back under the waves. We watched silently in astonishment, never having been so close to such a huge, fast-moving creature. It seemed almost possible to count the small shellfish on the whale's skin.
In early December, gray whales, blue whales, and others had just started heading around the tip of Baja California, Mexico, moving as a community from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. It's in that protected waterway that pregnant whales give birth to their babies. Other whale babies, born the year before, could be seen sailing behind. All whale babies get two trips like this with their mom before they're ready to start having babies of their own and making the journey on their own.
We're in one of several small powerboats, sent out by ScubaCaribe, which carries on such tours in Cabo San Lucas, the whales seemed to be, at times, less than 100 feet from our boat when they rushed out of the water. At other times, they would get much closer and swim beside the boat.
“What if one lands on us ” a woman next to me wondered. Fernando Del Toro, the Destination Manager of ScubaCaribe said, “We haven't had any incidents (事件) of whales jumping over our boats as we always keep our distance. We're sure they themselves are probably careful not to crash into boats. Such an accident would probably also cause them much harm.”
“Everyone can enjoy this magical trip,” said Del Toro. “However, we do not recommend (推荐) it for kids under 5 years old,” he added.
Though conditions on the water vary, our trip was wonderful. Even when the boat sped up to catch up with the whales, there was little need to “hang on”, and some of us remained standing throughout most of the trip. Still, you may want to pack medicine for those who might get seasick while bouncing (颠簸行进) along the waves.
41. How does the author start the text
A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions.
C. By describing a scene. D. By giving background information.

A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Amazed. D. Discouraged.

C. An introduction to the travelling of whales. D. A suggestion on taking a whale-watching tour.
44. What does Del Toro say about whale-watching
A. It is suitable for all ages. B. It is much too dangerous.
C. It may cause serious damage to wildlife. D. It should be done from a proper distance.
45. How was the author's trip
A. It was smooth. B. It was exhausting.
C. It was destroyed by a storm. D. It was terrible due to his seasickness.

What is your calling What is your purpose in life What did you come to this world to do Every day we read about how we should find our purpose and pursue it throughout our lives in order to find meaning and contentment. There are even scientific studies that show people who view their work as a calling rather than just a career or a job have a higher life and work satisfaction. So, what exactly is this calling
I’ve personally struggled with this concept for many years. I knew that happiness not only came from a present state of joy, but also from the pursuit of an objective that gave me something to pursue. That is, until I found myself feeling empty despite my achievement of those goals.
And as I reflected on these feelings of emptiness and boredom that had arisen despite my successes, I realized something. Meaning and satisfaction come from a personal devotion to what we do and the intrinsic (固有的) fulfillment we get from it. It has nothing to do with financial gain, social advancement or any other type of external reward or motivation. It is about doing something that we love. It is about focusing our efforts and spending our time on passions that light the spark inside of us and allow us to share with the world the unique gifts we possess.
I had never before stopped to think about what I found intrinsically rewarding or fulfilling. Financial gain and external recognition were pretty much the only drivers I knew. More so, I thought this calling meant having one passion we were born with to pursue relentlessly (不懈地).
So, I spent some years trying to find this long-lost purpose of mine. I discovered during that time passions I had no idea I even had. Yet, I wasn’t sure how to make them into my life purpose. I searched for an answer but couldn’t find it. It wasn’t until I came to understand the truths about our purpose in life that I was able to find my place in this world.
Our purpose can consist of various things that make us feel alive. As we grow and evolve throughout the different stages in our lives, we may discover new passions and desires that change our sense of purpose and calling.
We all have a longing for lives that give meaning to our existence. The difference lies in how we go about accomplishing this. We must each find our own “shine” and then shine on.
51. According to the passage, the calling refers to________.
A. one’s view about careers
B. a task one has to carry out
C. a life-long career one chooses
D. a strong desire or sense of duty to do a job
52. Which of the following belongs to the author’s previous drivers for finding fulfillment
A. Financial gain and external recognition.
B. Pursuing passions relentlessly.
C. Discovering new passions.
D. Finding purpose in life.
53. What is the real purpose in life according to the author
A. Trying to do everything that you can.
B. Trying to achieve your ambitious goals.
C. Doing meaningful things with your passion.
D. Doing something that can be successful easily.
54. According to the 5th paragraph, we know that________.
A. the author spent some years making changes
B. the author used to think he had no passion at all
C. the author didn’t know how to search for the life purpose
D. the author has known his passions since he started to work
55. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage
A. It’s wise to give up discovering our one true passion.
B. It’s useless to pursue financial gain and external recognition.
C. It’s necessary to find our own calling and pursue it with vigor.
D. It’s important to share our passion with the world without stopping.
I had always been unhappy with my weight before I managed to lose weight. As a kid, I was bigger than everyone else around me and gained more weight after college.
One day, when I looked at myself in the mirror, I really disliked how I looked. I knew I had to make a change. Besides, my health was rapidly declining. I thought I should try something to lose weight.
I changed something I ate and made the gym my top priority. However, it was not easy. I had tried medication(药物治疗) before I tried to lose weight in the correct way. Coming off my medication was hard. My body was fighting itself and I had many weight-loss plateaus(停滞期). I also struggled at the gym sometimes and had a hard time pushing myself through workouts.
Luckily, my trainer kept me motivated. He was driving this bus to success for me. He was my constant supporter and biggest fan. Thanks to him I saw results within two months after starting my journey. 20 months later, I lost 160 pounds.
Now I can walk more than 50 feet without having to sit down. I can do laundry and clean my house. I can go to the grocery store without having to drive myself in the “fat cart”. I can do anything I want to without stressing about it. I am finally free!
If you also want to lose weight, my advice is to take small steps every day to reach your goal. When I started, 160 pounds seemed so overwhelming to me, but I took small steps and made changes every day to get where I am now. It is not about a quick fix. You can’t climb Mount Everest in one day. You have to do it one step at a time!
56 Why did the author want to try something to lose weight (No more than 10 words)
57 How did the author try to lose weight at last (No more than 10 words)
58. What did the author think played a key role in helping her lose weight (No more than 5 words)

1. —I will never go back to school again. It's a tough period in my life.
— ________. Who knows what may happen tomorrow.
A. Forget it B. I hope so C. Never say never D. I totally agree
A. forget it 忘了吧;B. I hope so 我希望如此;C. Never say never 永远不要说绝不;D.
2. The money will be used to help the people________ homes were lost in the earthquake.
A. what B. whose C. whom D. which
3. The young couple will have to rent a house, for their newly bought one ______.
A. is being decorated B. was decorated
C. will decorate D. had decorated
【答案】A

4. ______ for two days Steve managed to finish his report on time.
A. To work B. Worked C. To be working D. Having worked
5. Mr. Jones accepted our suggestion and tried every means to ______ himself to his new conditions.
A. suit B. adapt C. adopt D. regulate

C. By describing a scene. D. By giving background information.

C. An introduction to the travelling of whales. D. A suggestion on taking a whale-watching tour.
44. What does Del Toro say about whale-watching
A. It is suitable for all ages. B. It is much too dangerous.
C. It may cause serious damage to wildlife. D. It should be done from a proper distance.
45. How was the author's trip
A. It was smooth. B. It was exhausting.

I changed something I ate and made the gym my top priority.
