A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded(鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.

The conflict (冲突) between Russia and Ukraine itself may be a questionable topic, yet it is the people who suffer the most. More than 4 million Ukrainians had fled from their homeland one month after it began. It was the biggest migration (移民) wave since World War Ⅱ.
I wanted to help by being a volunteer. However, it was difficult because I don’t speak Russian or Ukrainian. Luckily, after searching on the internet, I was finally able to sign up to volunteer in a modern gallery called Svetova.
The gallery is owned by an overseas Chinese in Prague, Czech Republic, and had over 40 volunteers to provide help for the Ukrainian refugees (难民). During a two-week intensive (集中的) aid program, the gallery provided a place to live and food for up to five people for free and also served as a safe and interesting space for children, where English classes, games and other fun activities were organized.
Because of my busy school and work timetable, I was only able to volunteer there twice. But besides the owner and his family, I was the first Chinese volunteer. My role was to help the refugees fill out registration papers. Sometimes, it was difficult with the language barrier, but there were translators to help.
I was so impressed by one Ukrainian mother and her two kids, who still had such kind smiles and bright eyes, though they must have experienced all the awful things. Some other people may not be able to easily understand their feelings, but I really valued this chance to be with those people in need, doing what I could. Because we are all humans, we should come together in difficult times.

10. What was the writer’s work at Svetova

C. To help the refugees fill out registration papers. D. To deal with the language barrier.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot (智能聊天程序) from OpenAI, an AI technology company In San Francisco. It can produce any kind of writing as required. Many schools are afraid that ChatGPT could result in dishonesty and harm learning. So the tool, called AI Text Classifier from the same maker, is invented. Its task is to decide whether the writing was produced by students or by AI programs.
OpenAI warns that its new tool—like others already in use—is not perfect. The method for detecting AI-written writing “will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike of OpenAI. “Because of that,” he added, “it shouldn’t be only relied upon when making decisions.”
Teenagers and college students were among the millions of people who began experimenting with ChatGPT after it was put into use on November 30. The tool is a free service on OpenAI’s website. Many people have found ways to use it creatively and harmlessly. Still, some teachers are worried that it could be used to cheat.
So far public schools in some cities, such as New York City and Los Angeles, began to block (阻止) its use in classrooms and on school computers. Public schools in Seattle blocked ChatGPT on all school computers but then opened it to teachers. One spokesman Tim Robinson said teachers wanted to use ChatGPT as a teaching tool. “We can’t afford to ignore (忽视) it,” Robinson said. Students could also use the service as a “personal teacher” or to help create ideas when doing homework, Robinson said.
OpenAI talked about its new tool on a blog recently. But the company added that the tool could help to find some mistakes in writing as well as catch cheating. The longer a piece of writing is, the better the tool is at deciding whether an AI system or a human wrote something.
12. Who are more likely to use AI Text Classifier
A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Writers.
13. What is Leike’s attitude towards AI Text Classifier
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned C. Cautious D. Satisfied
14. Why are some teachers worried about ChatGPT
A. It costs the users a lot of money. B. It often makes wrong decisions.
C. They can’t use it as a teaching tool. D. Students will take advantage of it to cheat.
15. What can we learn from the example of ChatGPT
A. Every coin has its two sides. B. Rome was not built in one day.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. A bit is better than nothing.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A

Before long, we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few vehicles on the road and the trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited! As a few hours passed we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later, we found a river not far away from the road. The beach was very wide, and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad turned our car and drove towards it. Soon, we were driving on the sandy beach. Our car wheels were struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it, our car had got stuck in the sand. My dad tried to turn around or move back but the car didn’t move. We were trapped in the middle of nowhere. What was worse, it began raining We got out of the car and tried to push it, but failed. We were tired and our hair and coats were a little wet. But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously, we walked to the road, hoping to stop a vehicle for help. But after waiting for a long time, there wasn’t one vehicle passing. Just when we were helpless, we saw a farmhouse not far away. “Can they help us I asked. My dad was doubtful. Still, we reached there, and found it was a big family. They seemed poor but friendly. 【答案】One possible version:
To our surprise, they nodded without thinking. They quickly found some ropes and tools. And they all, including a sixty-year-old man, two tall sons, their wives and several cheerful children, followed us. When reaching the beach, some of us pushed the car while others pulled it out with all strength. We tried hard, but the car didn’t move. Just then, my father saw that many faces of this family were covered with sweat, but they didn’t leave. Finally, after we tried many times, the car was pulled out of the sand.
My dad was so grateful that he handed some money to the family to thank them. However, they refused. Instead, they invited us to have a meal and offered to dry our coats. At their insistence, we returned to their home again, where the women went to prepare the meal while the men lit a big fire using firewood. The family offered us clean coats and hung our wet ones near the fire. We sat around the fire, and soon felt warm. Later, we enjoyed their delicious meal. That experience made me know that there are many helpful people who don’t expect anything in return.

8. What can we infer from Paragraph 1
A. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine lasted one month.
B. People in Ukraine have suffered a lot in the conflict.
C. More than 4 million Russians left their homeland.

A. register B. compete C. prefer D. expect
10. What was the writer’s work at Svetova
A. To provide food and living place for the refugees. B. To treat the injured refugees.
C. To help the refugees fill out registration papers. D. To deal with the language barrier.
11. Which of the following could be the best title
A A terrible conflict B. A devoted gallery owner
C. A unique chance D. A valuable volunteer experience

A Every coin has its two sides. B. Rome was not built in one day.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. A bit is better than nothing.

My parents decided to drive me to the countryside for relaxation (放松) after a busy month. Then, on a Saturday morning, my dad started his car and we set off with great expectation.
My dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.
