September usually marks the start of a new season—but what you call that season depends on where you are and whom you ask
In the UK, people will tell you it’s “autumn”. However, cross the Atlantic and you'll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” interchangeably (可互换地) when talking about this time of year. In the English language, the season has two widely accepted names. However, many people don’t understand why there are two words. Why does it have to be bewildering
According to Dictionary. com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname that followed the more traditional “autumn”. The two terms were actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.
Before either word appeared in the word list of English, the seasons separating the cold and warm months didn’t have common names. The main thing people did during the pre-winter period was collect crops, so it was called “harvest” in Old English.
Then, in the 1600s, more and more people left their farmland and moved into cities. Without farming, the term “harvest” became less useful to city dwellers (居民). Some English speakers needed another name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during that season, so people called the season “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short. But at the end of the 1600s, “autumn”, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, was introduced into England and overtook “fall” as the standard term for the harvesting season.
At the same time, British settlers were making their first long journey to North America. They brought the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. Today, using both words to describe the season is a uniquely American behavior.
4. What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean
A. Confusing. B. Interesting. C. Shocking. D. Inspiring.
5. Why was a new word "fall" created
A. To better describe crops.
B. To replace the term “harvest”.
C. To mark the move into cities.
D. To celebrate the harvesting season.
6. What do we know about “autumn”
A. It is a French word. B. It is preferred by farmers.
C. It means harvesting crops. D. It appears later than “fall”.
7. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Harvest and Weather B. Fall and Autumn
C. The Season of September D. The Origin of Autumn
A 5. B 6. D 7. B
根据划线词bewildering前的内容“In the English language, the season has two widely accepted names. However, many people don't understand why there are two words.(在英语语言里,这个季节有着两个广泛使用的名字。但是,很多人不理解为什么有两个词。)”可知,前文提到很多人不理解为什么有两个词表示“秋天”,故此处划线词bewildering与A项“令人困惑的”意思相近,很多人不理解为什么有两个词表示“秋天”,那为什么它这样令人困惑呢,故选A。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Without farming, the term "harvest" became less useful to city dwellers (居民). Some English speakers needed another name for the season.(没有农业,“收获”这个词对城市居民就没那么有用了。一些说英语的人需要为这个季节取另一个名字。)”可知,“收获”这一词没有作用了,因此需要另外一个词来替代它,故人们需要一个新名字替代“收获”。故选B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“But at the end of the 1600s, “autumn”, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, was introduced into England and overtook “fall” as the standard term for the harvesting season.( 但在1600年代末,来自法语单词“autompne”和拉丁语“autumnus”的“秋天”被引入英国,并取代“fall”成为收获季节的标准术语。)”
根据文章第二段“In the English language, the season has two widely accepted names. However, many people don’t understand why there are two words.(在英语语言里,这个季节有着两个广泛使用的名字。但是,很多人不理解为什么有两个词。)”以及全文对这两个词的来历的介绍可知,文章主要介绍了表示“秋天”一词的两个单词autumn和fall的来历,故B项“Fall and Autumn”符合本文标题,故选B。

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30-year-old man.
Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”
8. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with
A. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
9. Why is traveling alone challenging
A. It will finally build your character. B. You have to make things on your own.
C. It is hard for you to prove yourself to others. D. You can only depend on yourself whatever happens.
10. What can we infer about Chris Richardson
A. He started traveling alone at an early age B. He used to work as a salesman.
C. He was once shot in the arm. D. His website inspires others a lot.
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. Travel Abroad. B. Travel Light. C. Travel Alone. D. Travel Wide and Far.
A 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第二段中的“Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.(来自加利福尼亚州的Kristina Wegscheider在大学时第一次独自旅行,她认为这是每个人一生中至少应该做一次的事情。)” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging.(在国外,没有人帮你看地图,生病时没有人照顾你,钱包被盗时没有人借钱,这很有挑战性。)”
根据第四段中的“Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year.(Chris Richardson去年决定辞去在澳大利亚的销售工作去旅行。)”
通读全文可知,第一段“Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.(现在许多年轻人独自环游世界,不是因为他们没有人可以一起旅行,而是因为他们更喜欢独自旅行。)”引出了独自旅行的话题;接着文章举了Kristina Wegscheider和Chris Richardson的例子说明了他们对独自旅行的感受;最后一段用19世纪的探险家约翰·缪尔的话“Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.(只有在沉默中独自前行,才能真正进入荒野的中心。)”

For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic (基因的,遗传学的) risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
12. How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A. By analyzing a mass of data.
B. By conducting genetic research.
C. By comparing various levels of activity.
D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
13. What does the study show about depression
A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
14. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Harmful. B. Complex. C. Unusual. D. Common.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. To discuss a disease.
B. To introduce a method.
C. To analyze a genetic risk.
D. To explain a phenomenon.
A 13. B 14. D 15. B

根据第三段内容,尤其是“On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.(平均而言,每天大约35分钟的额外体育活动可能有助于人们降低患抑郁症的风险,并预防未来的抑郁症发作)”可知,该研究表明体育锻炼可以帮助人们降低患抑郁症的风险并防止未来抑郁症的发作。

通读全文,尤其是第一段的“For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise.(对于患有抑郁症的人来说,他们应该使用一种纯天然的治疗方法——多锻炼)”可知,全文主要讲的是锻炼有助于减少和预防抑郁症的发生。

September usually marks the start of a new season—but what you call that season depends on where you are and whom you ask.

C. It means harvesting crops. D. It appears later than “fall”.
7. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Harvest and Weather B. Fall and Autumn
C. The Season of September D. The Origin of Autumn

10 What can we infer about Chris Richardson
