Celebrating the Harvest Around the World
A harvest festival is a celebration of the fall months and the harvest that often accompanies these months. Many countries celebrate harvest festivals in different forms.
Canada
In Canada, people celebrate their harvest on Thanksgiving. This tradition is said to date back to the 16th century. The English explorer Martin Frobisher(1535—1594) came upon the land, searching for the “New World”. As he arrived in Canada in 1578, he celebrated surviving the long journey by holding a formal celebration and eating salt beef and peas. Today, it has become a recognized holiday in the country that falls on the second Monday in October. On Thanksgiving, most return home to gather with their family. One of the highlights(高潮) of the holiday is a big Thanksgiving Day meal, which usually includes turkey and bread, which are prepared and presented in a unique Canadian way.
The United Kingdom
Harvest festival activities are considered a special time for communities to come together in celebration. The harvest festival may start with carrying baskets of fruits and vegetables to a local church where people sing praise songs for a healthy harvest while praying for future harvests. A special effort may be made to give food to the less fortunate. Large dinners may also be hosted where each member brings a special dish to share with each other.
China
In 2023, the Farmers' Harvest Festival was launched in China. It's held on the day of the autumn equinox(秋分), which falls roughly on Sept. 22 or 23. Every year, a range of events are organized nationwide. In Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, farmers brought 100 seed varieties to the main site of the ceremony in Hanhu District and placed them in a wall to mark the achievements of the seed industry. In Heilongjiang Province, the festival was combined with local traditions of the Daur people and the locals danced around bonfires.

As a teenager, Gray would collect mushrooms ( 蘑菇) with her family in Cape Town, South Africa, and after moving to the coast 14 years ago, she fully accepted wild foraging ( 搜 寻 食 物). Gray started experimenting with wild flavors, adding edible flowers and herbs to iced teas and cakes.
She became a personal wild food cook, foraging daily for ingredients down the coast in the summer. “I believe that food that is picked as fresh as possible and as close to your location as possible is the best for you,” Gray says, “and wild foods meet all those requirements.”
Wild foods are considered to be anything not planted by humans. They're sourced depending on the season. There is no shortage of options in the Cape Floral Region — recognized by UNESCO as one of the most special places on Earth for plant biodiversity. More than 9,000 plant species grow in this region.
“Foraging here supplied the main food for the Khoikhoi people, one of the oldest people on Earth,” according to Mark Heistein, CEO of Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve. Hundreds of these ingredients are also believed to have medicinal qualities, says Heistein, “like rooibos tea, considered a health tea, which is exported worldwide.”
Since 2017, Gray has been sharing her love of the edible landscape with locals and tourists through seasonal workshops around 10 kilometers south of Cape Town. She has taught thousands of people how to forage.
When COVID-19 hit South Africa and the country entered lockdown, Gray was unable to run her group workshops in person, but she continued to find a growing fanbase online. She has run 10 online workshops for groups during lockdown.
“It's very ironic (讽刺的) to be able to create this connection for people to nature through a screen,” Gray says. “The true foragers are not on any social media platforms — they're the ones who are doing the work in the mountains and out in the wild.”
24. What does the underlined word “edible” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Poisonous. B. Delicious. C. Eatable. D. Sweet.
25. Why is the Cape Floral Region mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To call on people to protect the environment.

D. To stress the importance of preserving plant biodiversity.
26. What is Mark Heistein's attitude toward foraging
A. Worried. B. Carefree. C. Surprised. D. Favorable.
27. What can be learnt about the workshops run by Gray

During the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. To make the time go faster, they sang “field hollers(叫喊)” that they used to sing in Africa. After the Civil War, African American music began to take new forms. It also adapted dance music, called "jump-ups", which had great rhythm(节奏). By the early 1900s, the guitar had become the main instrument of the blues.
Northern Mississippi, also known as the Delta, was the center of the blues tradition. By the 1920s, the Delta had many blues clubs called “juke joints”. African Americans listened and danced to music in these clubs. Some of the greatest blues singers and players performed in them.
Blues have a soulful(深情的) sound that listeners can easily recognize. The musical notes are often “bent”. This means that players change the notes slightly to give a song more strength. Whatever their origin, these bent notes most often define the blues.
Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe everyday life. The lyrics are often very intense and personal. They tell about sad times and hard work. They describe people who find or lose love, people who have money or wish for more, and people who feel happy or sad and lonely. The lyrics may use humor to describe life’s trials and joys. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech.
By the 1940s, large numbers of African Americans had left the Delta and moved north to find work. Many settled in Chicago. A new kind of blues, called “electric” or “Chicago” blues, began there. It used many of the same themes as the original blues. However, the new style of blues was played with electric guitars that “wailed” and with mouth instruments called harmonicas. The music often included a steady, strong drumbeat. The loud, intense Chicago blues was excellent dance music. Chicago blues led to the creation of a new music style: rock and roll.
28. What can you conclude about the blues music from the article?
A. It has been successful only in the American South.
B. It became a way to communicate and express feelings.
C. It would not have started without the juke joints of Mississippi.
D. It has spread in America due to several African musicians.
29. Why probably did African Americans move to Chicago?
A. They liked Chicago blues. B. More jobs were available there.
C. The South was too hot in the summer. D. People in Chicago appreciated their music.
pared with the Delta blues style, the Chicago blues style .
A. used more bent notes. B. used humor in the lyrics more often.
C. was louder and used some different instruments. D. was much more popular.
31. Which of the following would the author probably agree?
A. Blues music can communicate many human emotions.
B. Blues music focuses mainly on the sadness of everyday life.
C. Delta blues music is the only real blues music.
D. The musicians of blues music were mostly in poor conditions.

As a Chinese native religion, Taoism has a close relationship with Chinese folk customs. With the development of Taoism, it has become deep-rooted in, and the practices of, the ordinary people. This can be seen both in Taoist religious festivals and sacrifice-offerings.
There are many Taoist festivals, and quite a few of them have evolved into folk festivals. For example, the Double Ninth Festival on September 9 of lunar calendar came from the Taoist festival. It is said that in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), there was a Taoist immortal named Fei Changfang, who was resourceful enough to drive all devils away. At that time, he had a pupil called Huan Jing. One day, Fei Changfang foresaw a disaster on September 9 in Huan Jing's family, and told Huan Jing to fasten a bundle of dogwood onto his arm, and drink chrysanthemum wine in an elevated place so as to prevent the disaster. Having done what he had been told, Huan Jing's family was indeed safe and sound. Along with the spreading of Taoism, this legend has evolved into the Double Ninth Festival. When the day comes, people will carry dogwood and drink chrysanthemum wine in elevated places.
Many immortals in Taoism came into being on the basis of earthy folk gods, and thus the Taoist god-worshiping system has much in common with the earthy folk god-worshiping. On the one hand, a number of earthy folk gods such as Caishen(mammon), Chenghuangshen(city god), Dongyuedadi(god of East Mountain) and Guanshengdi(god of Saint Guan) have become part of the pedigree of folk gods; on the other hand, Taoist immortals such as Laojun(Holy Lord), Yuhuangdadi(Jade Emperor) and Baxian(eight immortals) have become widespread and part of people's life.
Moreover, some Taoist taboo tricks have an extensive influence on the folk society, especially in the countryside; or rather, they have constituted a necessary part of folk customs. The combination of Taoism and Chinese folk customs is in various aspects, but it is mainly embodied in celebrations of festivals and seasonal changes and spirit worshiping.

A. By analyzing causes and effects. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By following time order.
34. What is the genre or type of literature of this article
A. A story. B. An argumentation. C. An exposition. D. A news report.

When I arrived at 6 a.m. in the large hospital kitchen, Rose was already checking name tags on the trays(托盘). “Hi, I'm Janet.” I tried to sound cheerful, although I already knew Rose's reputation for being impossible to work with. “I'm scheduled to work with you this week.”
Rose stopped what she was doing and peered over her reading glasses. I could tell from her expression she wasn't pleased to see a student worker. “What do you want me to do Start the coffee ” I asked.
Rose coldly nodded and went back to checking name tags.
I filled the 40-cup pot with water and began making the coffee when Rose yelled,“That's not the way to make coffee.” She stepped in and took over.
Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.
Totally exhausted, I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third-year university student working my way through school, I had never before met anyone like Rose.
Fighting back tears, I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. “What shall I do ” The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.
Working with Rose the next morning, I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked, I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love.
Over the next few days, an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.
Throughout the rest of the summer,we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman, I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems. She even told me everything about her plan of finding a proper new job in secret.
The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.
Paragraph 1:

Good morning, my fellow students! I am Li Hua from Senior Three.
Welcome to high school! Two years ago, I was sitting where you are now, while today I want to tell you that it is the starting point of a new term, a three-year journey, a promising future, and growth.
High school is of chief importance. With time and effort, you will see how this period adds colour to your life, shapes your understanding and defines your eternal happiness through gradually realizing your potential, which is the natural ability you are born with. To realize it, always remember to trust yourself, to explore yourself, and believe me, you will surprise yourself sooner or later.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
One day, while I was working alone in one of the hospital kitchens,Rose entered the room without wearing her blue uniform. Instead of that, she was wearing street clothes. I looked at her in surprise. “Aren't you working today?”“I've got another job and won't be working here any more,” she said as she walked over and gave me a quick hug. “I just come here to say goodbye. You are the one person I will truly miss. You are the one person I wish I could take with me, my dearest friend.” Then she turned abruptly and walked out of the door.
Paragraph 2:
Although I never saw Rose again, I still remember her vividly. That summer, I learned a lesson I've never forgotten. The world is full of people like Rose: annoying demanding, unlovable on the outside, yet hurting inside. Just as the saying goes every rose has its thorn, and every man's character has a part of you that you can't stand. I've found that a warm blanket of love is the best way to nurture a rose, to develop a friendship.

W: Wow, you got us tickets for the show tonight
M: Yes, I thought it would be a nice surprise. It starts at 8:00.
W: Okay, we’ll still go out for a meal at 6:30 and make sure we’ve left at 7:30.
(Text 2)
M: Hi Sue. Are you free for lunch today
W: No, Jake. My son David is feeling under the weather. He couldn’t go to school.
(Text 3)
M: Where did you go last week
W: I went up north to see my grandma for a few days. She cooked me some delicious food and I did lots of little jobs around the house for her.
(Text 4)
W: I’ve had a lot of trouble sleeping lately.
M: Have you tried drinking warm milk
W: I have. It helped a little but I’m going to do more exercise.
M: If that doesn’t work it might be worth changing your diet.
(Text 5)
M: I’m going to the Medical College if I get through Class 12.
W: Oh! Are you going to be a doctor
M: Yes. My father is a doctor, and I have always wanted to follow his footsteps.
(Text 6)
M: How much is a haircut
W: A simple one is $20, with styling is $35, and a wash is an extra $5.
M: Oh, in my city it costs about half that. Do you have any deals
W: Fifteen percent discount on a color if you get anything more than a simple cut.
M: Okay, I’ll have a cut, style and wash.
W: No problem.
(Text 7)
W: Thanks for watching the kids again. What’d I do without you
M: Probably go crazy!
W: I know, but they love coming over. I’m so busy with work and need a break sometimes.
M: I love having them over, Mary, but you work too much and miss good quality time with them.
W: Yeah, I know, but I have to work, and childcare is so expensive.
M: Don’t worry about that. Me and Mum are happy to help. We just worry about you.

M: We do in Sweden, but they aren’t common at all.
W: In Ghana, we would never send elderly people to a nursing home. Never, not in a million years. When people get old, they live with their children or their grandchildren, and everyone is happy with this situation.
M: Really I can’t imagine it.
W: Yes, this is what happens and everyone expects it.
M: Old people are quite independent in Sweden. They live in their own flats.
W: Well, I guess the English are different again. But the nursing homes are pretty good. They provide a community, enough food for old people. Obviously, some nursing homes are terrible, but not all of them, and they’re allowed visitors.
(Text 9)
W: Hey Daniel!
M: Mia, what’s up
W: I’m organizing a charity run next weekend and was wondering if you’d like to join. It’s for a great cause, the local kid’s hospital. I think it would be a fun way to get some exercise and do something good for the community.
M: That sounds like a fantastic idea!
W: Great, are you in
M: Yeah, I’d love to help out and do my part to support them!
W: Wonderful, I’m glad to hear it! Can you help me promote the event and encourage others to join in
M: Maybe. What do you want me to do
W: Just speak to your friends, and reach people you know. And I’ll speak to the neighborhood.
M: No problem, I can do that.
W: We just want to make sure as many people as possible know about it, and have the opportunity to join in and support.
M: Absolutely. I’ll share the details and talk to some of my friends about it. I’m sure we can get a great turnout for it.

M: When I left the United States for Mexico, I was excited but worried. Although I had a job waiting for me there and I had met my new boss, I had to learn a new culture, make friends, and I also had to learn a new language. Despite the challenges, I was determined to make the most of the opportunity.
Shortly after arriving, I kept a rescue dog that I named Marley. She helped me find my footing in the new country and kept me company when I was homesick. She was afraid of loud noise, and it took time and effort to help her become more comfortable in a new environment. This taught me patience.
I was determined to learn Spanish. I took classes and practiced the language by talking to the locals. As I slowly began to pick up the language, I realized that understanding the culture and the history was exciting and it was more than just remembering vocabulary and grammar. Soon, it was about making the most of the experience.
I’ve been in Mexico for a few years now, and I can confidently say that I am doing well here.
