Since the age of three, Chelsie Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer. That dream nearly ended one
night in 2010. Hill was in a car accident, which put the 17-year-old girl in hospital for 51 days and left her
paralyzed (瘫痪). For most people, that would mean the end of their dreams. But for Hill, it was the
beginning. Her wheelchair encouraged her to think a lot about her life. “I want to tell everyone including
myself that I m still normal ” she said, “whatever normal means”.
For her, “normal” meant dancing. With half of her body taken away, Hill had to move it with hands.
It took a lot of learning and patience, but she still made it in her wheelchair with her non-disabled high
school dance team.
After graduation from high school in California. Hill hoped to reach more people in a larger city. She
moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities and she named it the
Rolettes. Every year, Hill holds a dance camp called the Rollettes Experience for wheelchair user to help
them show out their acting talent. In 2019, 173 competitors from ten countries attended it. For many, it
was the first time they had felt a sense of belonging. Edna Serrano said. “I didn t know I could do so many
things that my teammates had taught me. It s so powerful to have my teammates in my life, because
they re my teachers. I have more confidence.”

dream in the wheelchair. The Rollettes has helped challenge her to be more independent. “It even gives
me the courage to take up driving.” she said.

Do you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar If you have good
vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if your grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is leaning new words and then forgetting them. So, when you
want to use a new word in a conversation, you can t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen
to you The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying word lists
and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don t have a very good
memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and
use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Each time you learn a new word, for
example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is
more active than just reading a definition(释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or
translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you
create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”, write in your vocabulary notebook: generous
(adjective), definition﹣giving or willing to give freely. Example One, from the article: Thanks for
paying for my dinner, you re very generous. Example Two, my example: My brother is generous
because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It s best if your example sentences are true to
your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your
vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It s helpful
for you to remember it. These two simple steps﹣writing the word and using it at once﹣help you
remember and use new words.
38. Who is the text mainly written for
A. English teachers. B. Book lovers.
C. Language learners. D. Worried parents.
39. What does the writer think of remembering words by studying dictionaries
A. It is the best way to learn new words.
B. It helps people communicate successfully.
C. It helps people to use new words correctly.
D. It s a good way for those with excellent memories.
40. According to the text, which of the following is the correct order of taking vocabulary notes
a. Make your own example sentence.
b. Write the word, its English definition or translation.
c. Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
d. Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A. b﹣c﹣a﹣d B. b﹣c﹣d﹣a C. c﹣d﹣b﹣a D. c﹣b﹣a﹣d
41. The writer thinks the best examples are those ▲ .
A. from the dictionary B. connected with people s life
C. from the articles D. copied from others notebooks

Lonely You re hardly alone. Because of COVID-19, few teens have been able to spend as much
time at school or with friends as they used to. But even before the COVID-19, loneliness was becoming a
growing problem for teens. And the trend (趋势) appears throughout some nations across the world.
That s the finding of a new study. The study connected rising loneliness to a greater use of smartphones
and the Internet over the same years.
“Smartphones can help keep us connected with friends,”says Jean Twenge, a psychologist, who took
part in the study. “But they can also make people feel left out. “Girls, especially, may feel this way. One
reason may be that they like to post more photos and selfies than boys. Studies have shown that if those
pictures don t get a lot of “likes”, it can affect a teen s mental health.
And there s “phubbing”, a mixture of “phone” and “snubbing (冷落)”. It s that moment in which a
friend or family member takes out a phone and keeps looking at it, paying no attention to everybody else,
including you. Phubbing is one way that technology can affect you, even when you re not the one using it.
The new study is mainly according to a survey called the Program for International Student
Assessment (PISA). Its questions mostly dealt with education. But they also included six statements about
loneliness, such as “I feel embarrassed and out of place in my school”. The good news: most teens around
the world still felt liked and included at school. But the fact that so many were reporting loneliness is a
worrisome trend.
If technology causes loneliness, should we stop using it “No, not at all, “argues Twenge.
“Everybody of all ages is trying to figure out how we can best use these technologies and stay mentally
healthy.” Her advice is to “use your smartphone for what it s good for. Then put it away.” That includes
putting it away overnight -- ideally in another room.
42. According to the study, more teenagers feel lonely mainly because of ▲ .
A. the influence of COVID-19
B. the greater use of technologies
C. more communication with friends
D. more educational problems at school
43. How do girls differ from boys in smartphone use
A. Girls post more pictures with it than boys.
B. Girls depend more on phones to connect with others.
C. Boys don t expect “likes” for their photos they post.
D. Boys make more use of their phones for their study.
44. Why does the author discuss “phubbing” in Paragraph 3
A. To introduce an interesting situation.
B. To give an example of communication.
C. To introduce another term of the smartphone.
D. To show another bad influence of the smartphone.
45. Which of the following would Twenge probably agree with
A. Smart phones are not good for teenagers.
B. Parents shouldn t buy phones for their kids.
C. It s bad to leave the smartphone at the bedside.
D. People who use smartphones are less healthy.

Dear Tim,
I'm so excited about your interest in the Double Ninth Festival, a traditional festival in my country.
The Double Ninth Festival is a very old festival, with a history of over 1,700 years. It was set up for
people to show respect to the old. On that day, people usually eat double ninth cakes, climb mountains
and go outing with their family.
As for me, I often visit my grandparents who live in the countryside. I will talk to them, help them
with the housework and cheer them up. In fact, I always try my best to be nice to the old. For example,
when I see them on the bus, I will offer them my seat. I also volunteer to look after the old who live alone
in our neighborhood.
If you have the chance, you can come to China and experience it for yourself.
Yours,
Li Hua

Hi, everyone. My name is Jack. I’m going to tell you something about my wonderful holiday. Last
month, I went camping. The place was very pretty. To the west of the place there was a lake. We went
boating on it. We could also walk across a little bridge to an island where many fishermen lived. To the
east there was a farm, where many kinds of green vegetables were grown. The farmers were really
friendly, and we bought fresh eggs and milk from them. Near the farm there was a hill. It was hard work
climbing up it, but I’m glad we went there. At the top there was a historical building. We guessed it
might be an old school. We also walked to the local village, which was about 2 km south of the place. It
was small but had everything we needed --food, drink and a tea room!
