Martin Kocher, an international business student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has always been interested in exploring different cultures and traditions in preparation for a global career. Focusing on global management, he was super motivated (激励) to develop his career about sustainable development.
Kocher is set to graduate in May with a major in international business, expressing his gratitude to the university for training his international ambitions. After he completed the internship (实习) in Australia, he traveled to a small island of Lombok near Bali, Indonesia. A teacher at the local school told Kocher that the English language can empower students and allow them to bridge the cultural gap with people in other parts of the world, but the school lacked the resources.
As a result. when Kocher returned to U’W-Eau Claire, he founded Language 4 Lombok to connect English language resources from Chippewa Valley residents with the Indonesian island. Books from community book drives are shipped abroad to help children learn English.
His non-profit work is not his whole life. He is also a competitive diver, part-time real estate agent, enthusiastic photographer and writer. Dr. Kaishan Kong, a professor of Kocher said he is a real jack of all trades, and was impressed with his ability to connect different languages while maintaining an incredible enthusiasm for learning them.
Having benefited a lot from his own experiences Kocher encourages others to travel and venture internationally, calling it “one of the best investments you can make in yourself.”

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5, 2023, online issue of Neurology. “Our study found that gum (牙龈) disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage (萎缩) in the hippocampus (海马体) , which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer’s disease,” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph. D. of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.
The study involved 172 people without memory problems. Their average age was 67. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for the amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1. 3 years of brain aging.
“These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. “The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is important, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropnate false ones.”
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be applied to other locations.
8. What is Yamaguchi’s study mainly about
A. The function of the hippocampus.
B. Ways of taking good care of one’s teeth
C. The harm and causes of brain shrinkage
D. The connection between dental health and the brain
9. How did researchers conduct the study
A. By collecting and comparing data. B. By referring to previous studies
C. By conducting a chemical experiment D. By doing research into dentists
10. What do the research findings indicate
A. Gum disease is increasing among people
B. Keeping teeth healthy is of great importance.
C Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health
D. Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An advertisement. B. A textbook.
C. A newspaper. D. A guidebook.
D
Scientists have already applied robots like Roomba to work in the agriculture (农业). A Roomba works because it has wheels that function well on flat ground. However, fields are full of rough and rocky environments, which means it is difficult for robots to work in the fields. Luckily, scientists thought of centipedes (蜈蚣). With tens to hundreds of legs, they can move on any places without stopping. If they stop moving their body parts and feet, they basically stop moving instantly.
A team led by Chong developed a theory that proposes that adding leg pairs to the robot increases its ability to move firmly over challenging environments.
To test this, Juntao conducted a series of experiments where he and Daniel Soto built models to simulate (模拟) different natural environments. He then tested the robot by increasing its number of legs by two each time, starting with six and finally increasing to 16. As the leg count increased, the robot could more easily move across the surfaces, even without sensors. Finally, they tested the robot outdoors on real environments, where it was able to move in a variety of environments.
The researchers are applying their discoveries to farming. Goldman has co-founded a company that wants to use these robots to weed (除草) farmland where weedkillers are ineffective. “It’s truly impressive to see the multilegged robot easily moves on both lab-based and outdoor environments,” Juntao said. “Now we are deciding the most suitable number of legs to achieve motion. In the future, we hope to apply them for space exploration, and even search and rescue.”
12. What can we learn about Roomba
A. It can move on any places without stopping.
B. It can not work well in the rough farmlands.
C. It was newly invented and still in its early age.
D. It was inspired when scientists saw centipedes
13. Which of the following best describes the multilegged robot
A. Unpractical. B. Amusing. C. Ineffective. D. Promising.
14. What can we expect of the multilegged robot in the future
A. It will reach consumers soon. B. It will increase farm production.
C. It will be used in many other fields. D. It will take the place of weedkillers.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Centipedes Inspire Multilegged Robots’ Invention
B. Scientists Get a Huge Step in Studying Centipedes
C. Scientists Solved Challenges in Robots’ Creation
D. Multilegged Robots Brought Benefits to Farming

Mum and Her Bank Account
My family had the tradition to sit down by the kitchen table every Saturday night to count out the money Dad had brought home.
These are for the rent, and these for the groceries. “ Mum counted out and divided the big silver pieces.
I’ll need a notebook, “ That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.
After Mum put one or two coins to the side for the notebook, she said that was all we needed to buy for the week and we all relaxed a little. We didn’t have to go downtown and draw money out of Mum’s bank account, which could always give us such a warm and secure feeling for having enough to afford the life.
When Nels graduated from grammar school , he needed some money for high school We sat by the table and I offered my “ Little Bank” which was used for sudden emergencies such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to see a doctor. I laid the box carefully in front of Mum. After counting out the money in the little bank and finding there was not enough, we all agreed not to go to the bank but to find some ways.
Nels volunteered to work in Dillon’s grocery after school and Dad said he would give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We felt relieved.
So many things came out of the little bank that year: Christine’s dress for the school play, Nel’s operation ... Whatever happened , we always knew we still had the bank to depend on. We never used her bank account.
That was twenty years ago.
Last year, I sold my first story. When the money came I thought of Mum’s bank account.

For people with mild gum disease having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth.
C. Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health
D. Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.

I’ll need a notebook “ That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.

【答案】So I hurried over to her home. On arriving, I gave the money to Mum and asked her to save it in the bank. Mum said she was very proud of me and asked me to go with her, because she didn’t know how. I asked how she had done that before. She said actually there was no bank account at all in all her life and she had never been to a bank before.
Knowing that there was no bank account at all, I felt shocked. I just didn’t know how to respond. Mum said seriously that it was not good for the kids to worry about life and she didn’t want us not to feel secure. My tears just burst and stories of these years jumped into my mind one by one...I got to feel how deep the love Mum had been giving us.
Mum said she was very proud of me and asked me to go with her.和She said actually there was no bank account at all in all her life and she had never been to a bank before.,使文章表达更加地道。
