Four finalists (决赛者) from the Young Scientist Award competition talk about making a video and giving presentations to the judges.
Maria studied the effects of energy drinks and produced one herself. If you’re having a block, wait a day or two and look at it with fresh eyes. You’ll find inspiration somewhere. But make sure that you have enough time to complete your video! Waiting until the last minute, when you are all rushed, isn’t a good idea.
If you have a plan laid out before you start anything, it helps to keep you moving forward.
Erik invented a material which can be painted on football boots to stop them attracting mud.
I think the best ideas come from everyday life—because that’s where they are going to be put to use after all! Start thinking of ideas with your family and friends and write down every possibility which comes into your head. But make sure your project is realistic.
David has found a way of working out how long bicycle tyres will last.
For your video, pick a concept that you can explain so that it’s visual (形象化的) and interesting. People have different learning styles, so use different methods to explain the same concept. There were some finalists who had memorised a lot more scientific facts than me, but I was able to take a scientific concept and explain it in a simple way.
Anita produced lights which come on and go off automatically and can be attached to a bicycle.
Making a great video, which gets all the ideas across, isn’t as easy as it looks, so it’s good to look at past entries (参赛作品) from finalists and learn what makes them successful. And one of the hardest parts is fitting your information into two minutes. It seems like plenty of time, but it goes by so quickly!
36. What does Maria suggest people do when making a video
A. Draw up a plan first. B. Find new ideas from daily life.
C. Share their thoughts with judges first. D. Finish their videos as soon as possible.
37. What’s Erik’s opinion on best ideas
A. They should be visual. B. They needn’t be realistic.
C. They should be related to daily life. D. They must be discussed with others.
38. How did David explain his idea
A. By introducing a new method.
B. By making it clear and interesting.
C. By presenting various scientific facts.
D. By using the same method to show different ideas.
39. How does Anita prepare to make a video
A. She asks her family for help. B. She searches for a realistic idea.
C. She collects the latest information. D. She learns from past finalists’ works.
40. What does Anita think of the video preparation
A. It doesn’t need to hurry up.
B. It’s easy to make a short video.
C. Collecting information is difficult.
D. It’s hard to put all the information within 2 minutes.
A 37. C 38. B 39. D 40. D

Can you think of a day without music We can hear music everywhere: in the streets and at home, over the radio and on TV, in the shops and in the parks. People all over the world are fond of music. They listen to music, they dance to music, and they learn to play musical instruments.
Music isn’t only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects life. There are a lot of different kinds of music. Some of them appeared long ago, and some are modern. Folk music appeared long ago, but it is still alive. Folk songs are very pleasant to listen to. Classical music is often associated with the music of the past. Rap is a modern musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words in time to music with a steady beat.
Great Britain has produced more popular music stars than any other country. British groups often set new trends in music. New styles, groups and singers continue to appear. Many of the new bands have been able to use changes in technology to develop their music such as computerised drum machines, synthesisers and other electronic instruments.
Tastes differ. So people’s musical interests range from pop and rock music to classical music and opera. My favourite style of music is pop music, because it is full of energy. When I listen to pop music it makes me remember happy times and forget the problems of everyday life. I also enjoy listening to classical music. The music I hate is heavy metal. I find it noisy. When I listen to this style of music it presents to my mind pictures of dark days. My mother and father agree with my tastes in music. Though they prefer to listen to classical, they think that modern music is not too bad.
Music appeals to our hearts. It comforts our souls and enriches (充实) our minds. Music is beauty in sounds; it is our magic source of inspiration.
41. What is the first paragraph mainly about

A. It has produced many popular music stars in the world.
B. It fails to apply new technology in the performances.
C. Many new bands insist on traditional instruments.
D. British groups fall behind the new trends now.
44. Why does the author like pop music
A. It is played with electronic instruments.
B. It is characterised by a steady beat.
C. It is loud and strong.
D. It sounds energetic.
45. What is the author’s parents’ attitude towards his musical taste
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Dissatisfied. D. Unconcerned.

People all over the world are fond of music. They listen to music, they dance to music, and they learn to play musical instruments.(你能想象没有音乐的日子吗?
根据文章第二段“There are lot of different kinds of music. Some of them appeared long ago, and some are modern. Folk music appeared long ago, but it is still alive. Folk music appeared long ago, but it is still alive. Folk songs are very pleasant to listen to. Classical music is often associated with the music of the past. Rap is a modern musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words in time to music with a steady beat.(有很多不同种类的音乐。
根据文章第三段“Great Britain has produced more popular music stars than any other country. British groups often set new trends in music. New styles, groups and singers continue to appear. Many of the new bands have been able to use changes in technology to develop their music such as computerised drum machines, synthesisers and other electronic instruments.(英国产生的流行音乐明星比其他任何国家都多。 It has produced many popular music stars in the world(它在世界上产生了许多流行的音乐明星)正确。故选A项。
根据文章倒数第二段“My favourite style of music is pop music, because it is full of energy.(我最喜欢的音乐风格是流行音乐,因为它充满活力)”可知,我喜欢流行音乐因为它听起来精力充沛。
根据文章倒数第二段“My mother and father agree with my tastes in music. Though they prefer to listen to classical, they think that modern music is not too bad.(我的父母认同我在音乐方面的品味。虽然他们更喜欢听古典音乐,但他们认为现代音乐还不错)”可知,我的父母认同我在音乐方面的品味,他们虽然更喜欢古典乐,但是认为现代音乐还不错。由此推知,作者的父母对他的音乐品味很支持。故选B项。
C
As a teen myself, I’ve seen first-hand the pleasing effects of poetry. Not too long ago, I went on stage to read my poetry at a writing workshop (研讨班), thinking anxiously to myself: Would the audience understand me I felt anxious about what my voice would sound like. At the time, I was 14, and still suffering from a speech disorder (语言障碍) that had affected me since I began talking. As I stood, I experienced a sudden appreciation for the blinding lights. I couldn’t see everyone’s face! That made things much easier. I opened my book and began to read.
After the writing workshop, I gained the confidence to read my own work aloud. I learned that writing wasn’t about pronunciation, but about style and the author’s voice. This lesson helped me grow on endless occasions in my life, convincing me that poetry can have an astonishing influence
One organization that I am part of, WriteGirl, through monthly creative writing workshops, gives girls the skills they need for a brighter future. Although WriteGirl doesn’t only focus on poetry, the organization still uses poetry to teach, inspire girls all across Los Angeles. While the high school graduation rate in Los Angeles is only 80 percent, every year 100 percent of WriteGirl teens not only graduate from high school, but move on to college.
But are these advantages becoming needless with the fast development of technology
It seems the answer is quite the opposite: technology has opened a whole new world for young poets and writers. On KidBlog, young students can post their poems as a blog post on which others can leave their opinions. The Internet makes it easier for viewers to read poetry. Many people are discovering or rediscovering that poetry is fun and creates many opportunities for self-expression.
As I stepped up to read my writing at the workshop, I learned that poetry is about having a voice, and the courage to use it. With this courage, we free ourselves and become able to influence others.
46. What does the word “that” in the first paragraph refer to
A. The blinding light. B. The speech disorder.
C. She couldn’t see others’ faces. D. She felt anxious about her voice.
47. How did the workshop influence the author
A. It aided her in making a long speech.
B. It helped her find her own strengths.
C. It improved her communication skills.
D. It made her begin to take speech disorder seriously.
48. What can we learn about WriteGirl
A. It is beneficial to girls’ studies.
B. It brings out girls’ poetic skills.
C. It encourages girls to teach poetry.
D. It helps girls become famous writers.
49. Which of the following may the author agree with
A. Poetry is old-fashioned in modern times.
B. Technology makes creating poetry easier.
C. Technology serves as a useful tool for poetry.
D. The Internet slows down the development of poetry.
50. What is the best title of the text
A. How poetry gave me a voice B. Why teens don’t read poetry
C. Approaches to learning poetry D. Influence of technology on poetry
46. C 47. B 48. A 49. C 50. A
根据文章第一段中的“I felt anxious about what my voice would sound like.(我很担心我的声音听起来会是什么样子。)”及划线词之前“As I stood, I experienced a sudden appreciation for the blinding lights. I couldn’t see everyone’s face!(我站着的时候,突然对这耀眼的灯光产生了感激之情。我看不见每个人的脸!)”以及划线词之后“made things much easier. I opened my book and began to read.(让事情变得容易多了。我打开书开始读。)”可知在上台之前作者还非常担心自己的声音,但是耀眼的灯光让作者看不到每个人的脸,所以作者才开始大胆地读起来,由此可以推测是看不清众人的脸这个事实让作者敢于开口读自己的诗歌,所以划线词that指代的是C项She couldn’t see others’ faces.(她看不清别人的脸。)
根据第二段中的“After the writing workshop, I gained the confidence to read my own work aloud. I learned that writing wasn’t about pronunciation, but about style and the author’s voice. This lesson helped me grow on endless occasions in my life(在研讨班之后,我获得了大声朗读自己作品的信心。我明白了写作不在于发音,而在于风格和作者的声音。这一课在我生命中无数的场合帮助我成长。)”可知,在研讨班朗诵诗歌后,作者收获了信心,这次经历在生活中无数次地帮助她成长,由此可知,在研讨班朗诵诗歌的经历有助于作者的自我成长。故选B项。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“While the high school graduation rate in Los Angeles is only 80 percent, every year 100 percent of WriteGirl teens not only graduate from high school, but go to college.(虽然洛杉矶的高中毕业率只有80%,但每年都有100%的少女不仅从高中毕业,而且上大学。)” 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中的“technology has opened whole new world for young poets and writers. On KidBlog, young students can post their poems as a blog post on which others can leave their opinions. The Internet makes it easier for viewers to read poetry. Many people are discovering or rediscovering that poetry is fun and creates many opportunities for self-expression.(科技为年轻的诗人和作家打开了一个全新的世界。在KidBlog上,年轻的学生可以把他们的诗作为博客贴出来,其他人可以在上面发表他们的意见。互联网使观众更容易阅读诗歌。许多人发现或重新发现诗歌是有趣的,并创造了许多自我表达的机会。)”可知,科技为年轻的诗人和作家创造了一个全新的世界,互联网使观众更容易阅读诗歌,这说明作者认为科技是促进诗歌发展的有力工具。故选C项。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据第一段中的“As a teen myself, I’ve seen first-hand the pleasing effects of poetry.(作为一个青少年,我亲眼目睹了诗歌带来的愉悦效果。)”以及最后一段中的“As I stepped up to read my writing at the workshop, I learned that poetry is about having a voice, and the courage to use it.(当我在研讨会上站起来阅读我的作品时,我了解到诗歌是关于有一种声音,以及使用它的勇气。)” 故选A项。
I need to arrive at work at 6 am, which means I have to leave my house at 5 am. Yes, it is quite difficult to wake up at 4 am. Our firm arranges for cab drivers to pick up employees from their homes before 5:30 am. But since we don’t have consistent cabs, the drivers end up having to roam around to pick up the fifteen people.
An employee comes to the office early regularly. He usually gets picked up first by the drivers. So he happens to know the addresses of most of the employees. He usually helps the drivers pick up the rest employees. He patiently directs the cab drivers while also calling each employee to inform them the cab is a few minutes away from their home.
Yesterday, I was wondering how this person can do this every day, without complaint, even though it’s neither part of his job, nor giving him any added advantage. I thought: “This is a person who definitely deserves a thank-you note.” So I just wrote a card to him yesterday evening, telling him that he has a great attitude and that all the employees really appreciate his act of service. Then, I put the note in an envelope, along with some chocolates.
Today, when I was supposed to hand my envelope to him, I felt a rush of fear and confusion pass over me. Maybe it was because I had never spoken to him or I was uncertain about how he would react — whether he would doubt my intention. However, when he was getting out of the cab, I thought: “I know my intention is good, and that’s the reason why I should give it to him. What he thinks of it is his own decision. I should do what I feel is right.” So I handed the envelope to him. And now, I feel happy! Maybe I made someone’s day today.

54. How did the author feel when thinking of handing the envelope to the employee (no more than 5 words)
__________________________________________________________________________
55. What message is carried in the passage (no more than 25 words)

I should do what I feel is right.(我知道我的意图是好的,这就是我应该给他的原因。 Do what you feel is right and ignore others’ reaction because what they think of it is their own decision.

B It’s easy to make a short video.
C. Collecting information is difficult.
D. It’s hard to put all the information within 2 minutes.

I need to arrive at work at 6 am which means I have to leave my house at 5 am.
