The lucky result was a flat and thin pancake that was made of wheat appeared, and wheat later became the key ingredient in traditional crepes. According to another story, crepes date back to the fifth century. The Roman pope (教皇) offered them to French visitors at that time.
The word “crepe” comes from the Latin word “crispa”, which means “curled (弯曲的)”. The food can be served in many different ways. Sweet crepes can include fruit, chocolate or cream. Did you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them quickly. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can't remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you The reason for this problem is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don't have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. For example, every time you learn a new word from an English lesson, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, its English definition or translation (翻译), one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create (创作).
Imagine you now learn the word “generous”, and write it in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adj.), definition — giving or willing to give freely, example sentence one from the article: “Thanks for paying for my dinner. You’re very generous”, and then example sentence two that you create: “My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends”. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it better. These two simple steps — writing the word and using it at once— help you remember and use new words better.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook If not, start now.
38. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. The problem. B. The new word. C. The conversation D. The dictionary.
39. What’s the correct order of the following steps of taking vocabulary notes
①Make your own example sentence.
②Write the word, its English definition or translation.
③Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
④Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A. ②③①④ B. ②③④① C. ③④②① D. ③②①④
40. How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer
A. By asking for help from friends. B. By explaining words' definitions.
C. By connecting them with our life. D. By adding words from the article.
41. What's the best title for the passage
A. Tips for Translating Words B. Advice on Using Grammar
C. Abilities of Creating Examples D. Ways of Learning New Words

Sometimes I really doubt (怀疑) whether there is love between my parents. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious (奢侈的) for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. And my father has a bad temper.
One day, mom was sewing a quilt (被子). I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Is there love between you and Dad ” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn't answer immediately.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. But at last I heard my mother say these words.
“Lily,” she said, “look at this thread(线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable(耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is inside.”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed that they were the most harmonious couple. The sun gently glistened through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.
The doctor said my father would recover in two months. But after two months he still couldn't walk by himself. All of us were worried about him.
“Dad, how are you feeling now ” I asked him one day.
“Lily, don’t worry about me,” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
42. Why does Lily sometimes doubt whether there is real love between her parents
A. Because they are very busy earning money.
B. Because they often act in unpleasant ways.
C. Because her father is easy to lose his temper to her mother.
D. Because his father often say “I love you” just to his children.
43. Which of the following is similar to the underlined phrase “out of the question” in Para. 1
A. Possible. B. Impossible. C. Necessary. D. Unnecessary.
44. What made her father change so greatly
A. The real love from her mother. B. The thread of the quilt.
C. The beautiful scenery of the country road. D. All the other members of the family.
45. What's the main idea of the passage
A. We should understand our parents however old they are.
B. Love is something we can't see and that makes life strong and warm.
C. We really need love because it makes our life meaningful.
D. Love is so important to everyone that we must love everyone.

Success does not belong to a select group of individuals. Success belongs to those who are willing to go after it and try their best to do what they have to do. Here are some useful practical ways for you if you want to be a success.
Desire. Desire is the strong wish to achieve a goal. Without desire, you have nothing. Before you can run with desire, your goal must be plain, clear, and it must also be exciting.
Show up. Seventy percent of success in life is showing up. You can’t have a best seller if you have never written a book. You can’t get your dream job if you're afraid to turn in an application. Showing up doesn’t guarantee (保证) success, but if you don’t show up, you will never succeed.
Fail. If you’re not willing to have a try, fail unhappily, and have another try, success won't happen. To have success, you have to do things the right way, but often the only way to do something right is to first fail at it. As Thomas J. Watson said, a simple formula (公式) for success is to double your rate of failure(失败). So welcome failure, become a student of failure, learn from failure, and soon you will succeed.
Work harder. Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day. Success is not about doing what the common person can’t do. It's about doing what the common person is unwilling to do. And on a deeper level, it’s about creating habits that the common person is unwilling to create. It’s the habit of doing things with excellence that causes success.
Enjoy the journey. Success is a journey, not a destination(终点). Success is not a certain car or a certain house or a certain happy marriage. Success is the enjoyment of the journey. You have to enjoy the journey.
Someone once said, “Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.” You have to change, you will change, and you will succeed.
46. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in achieving success
A. Good education. B. Working hard. C. Strong desire. D. Enjoying failure.
47. What does the writer really mean by saying “Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day.”
A. It's not easy for people to develop their health.
B. Keeping working harder is necessary when you go after success.
C. You are sure to meet with some difficulty in your life.
D. Most people don't want to spend too much time running.
48. What does the writer mostly want to tell us in the fourth paragraph
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Every dog has its day. D. Actions speak louder than words.
49. Which of the following is TRUE about success according to the passage
A. If you want to succeed, you should have special talents.
B. If you want to succeed, you'd better not show up.
C. Success means the enjoyment of your gain or loss on the journey.
D. Success is about doing what the common person can't do.

As an old Chinese saying goes, the Spring Festival comes right after the Laba Festival, so get ready for a bowl of Laba porridge.
Today, people across China are celebrating the Laba Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival. It’s on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. It is an important festival for Chinese people. To us, it means the traditional start of celebrations for the Spring Festival.
The Laba Festival is a day of thanks for a good harvest. On this day, people usually eat Laba porridge, a porridge with eight kinds of mixed grains (谷物). Today many temples in some areas still have the tradition of giving out Laba porridge to the public. The porridge is believed to bring luck and joy.
The festival is also the day for people to put garlic (蒜) in vinegar (醋). This Laba garlic will be eaten with dumplings on Chinese New Year’s Day. While in the past, it was used to let people remember to pay back the money they had borrowed, as Laba is near the end of the year and in Chinese garlic sounds the same as ‘calculate’ (算).
Customs are quite different across the country. People in Qianxian, East China’s Anhui Province, eat the Laba tofu a few days before. In Xining City, Northwest China's Qinghai Province, people eat porridge with beef and mutton.
