It was Christmas Eve. When everyone went to bed, Bunny couldn’t fall asleep. He still couldn’t think of what he wanted as a special Christmas present. He wondered how Santa-Father Christmas would know what to bring him if he didn’t know himself.
As he was sitting up in bed, Bunny heard a big noise on the roof and a sound downstairs. It was Santa Claus, he realized. Bunny jumped out of bed and ran down the hall to the stairs. He hoped to take a look at the old man before Santa left for his next stop.
By the time Bunny was at the bottom of the stairs, everything was silent again. Lots of presents were put under the Christmas tree, but Santa was gone. A little disappointed (失望的), Bunny turned to climb back upstairs when he heard a cry.
“Hello,” said Bunny. “Is somebody there ”
He was answered by another cry. Bunny looked around the big pile of presents to see what was making the noise. Right under the tree was a funny looking brown animal with big feet and sad eyes. It also had antlers (鹿角) on its head. Bunny almost mistook it for a dog.
“Are you a reindeer (驯鹿) ” asked Bunny.
“Yes,” replied the brown animal with antlers. “My name is Ralph.”
“And you were pulling Santa’s sled (雪橇) ”
“I was until I got air-sick,” replied Ralph. “Santa had to leave me here and go on with the other seven reindeer.”
“Isn’t it a bit unusual for a reindeer to get air-sick I mean, isn’t flying what reindeer are famous for ”
“Not me, I’m afraid. It makes me frightened. I always feel sick when it comes to flying,” replied Ralph. “But everyone wanted me to pull Santa’s sled, so when it was my turn I gave it a try. I’m afraid I just wasn’t for the job. Now I’m trapped here and I don’t know how to get back to the North Pole.”

My best friend and I made our first trip to Ireland less than a year ago. I wasn’t very excited about it at the very beginning. But my uncle wanted me to visit Ireland and offered to pay for my trip. Then I did. All of the words “magical, charming and memorable” don’t even describe what Ireland is. Our favourites were Kilkenny, Cobh and Killarney. We did a self-driver tour.
We stayed in a castle in Dublin for two days, where my ancestors(祖先) came from. The town we thought we might be bored in was Kilkenny, but we loved every minute we were there. There were so many places to explore and the pictures we took were beautiful.
It was so exciting to see the little village of Cobh and know it was the last stop for the Titanic(a famous ship) at that time. We loved the visitor centre there and the little shops. We never got any bad food there. It was so mouth-watering at every stop! And when we stayed in Westmeath, we saw the Trim Castle through the windows and found some scenes from Brave Heart which was filmed there. We were so excited. Again, more beautiful pictures were taken in that tiny town.
We love the country, the people, the food and the magic. We would go back very soon. I was so thankful for my uncle who had given me the chance to be there.
I have no words to adequately describe our trip. Go, explore the small villages, eat and enjoy! I still look at my pictures and can’t believe I was actually there.

“See I’m too full to care,” the cat said. “Have some more if you want.”
The bird thought for a moment. It flew down and got another piece, flying back to the tree to eat it. The cat smiled, “It’s good, right ”
“Could I have a little more, please ” the bird asked.
The ecat replied, “Help yourself.”
This time, the bird didn’t fly back to the tree. It ate beside the food. The bird was so hungry that it began to eat quickly. After it finished, the bird said, “Thank you. That was a great meal! I’m so full that I can hardly move!”

Smoke fills the sky. The day is as dark as night. Heat makes it hard to breathe(呼吸). This is the world of a wildfire fighter(消防员)!
Wildfires are a part of nature. But, as one firefighter says, “Fire is not a problem. People living near fire—that’s the problem.”A wildfire can destroy(毁坏) everything in its way. But there are ways to fight it.
By air
Smokejumpers(空降森林灭火员) are often the first firefighters to reach a fire. To get closer, they jump from a plane. They are especially important when the area is difficult to walk to. If smokejumpers can’t stop a fire in 24 hours, other firefighters join them. This second group drops water on the fire from an airplane.
On the land
On the ground, firefighters work together to stop the fire. First, one group digs a fire line. This is a long deep ditch(沟). It is difficult for the fire to cross this line.
Then, while those firefighters dig, others start a backfire(回火). They burn the dry grass and leaves between the wildfire and the fire line. When the wildfire comes, there is nothing for it to use as fuel.

Have you ever had a problem you couldn’t solve Maybe you went to a shop to look for a solution, but came home empty-handed. More and more, when this situation appears, people are creating their own devices (设备) as the solution. It’s all part of the Maker Movement, made up of thousands of resourceful people who make and fix things, rather than buy them in shops. Makers do all kinds of hands-on projects, from building pizza oven (烤箱) to designing their own drones. For makers, the do-it-yourself way is more affordable, green and satisfying.
Thanks to technology, it’s easier than ever to turn a thought into reality. Many makers use the same tools, just in different ways. For example, Arduino allows people to do anything from creating a talking clock to studying DNA, with very easy-to-use and free hardware (硬件) and software. Raspberry Pi is another popular maker tool. It is a low cost, bank-card sized computer drone that connects to computers or TVs, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing. This minicomputer is as powerful as some full-sized computers. People are using Raspberry Pi for a wide variety of uses, from creating video games to powering robots.
Another key piece of technology for makers are 3D printers, which allow a normal person to create just about anything. You can even use a 3D printer to build your own 3D printer!
The availability of these technologies encourages people to be creative, but technology is only one part of the Maker Movement. Collaboration – whether online or in person – is just as important. This is clear from the growing popularity of Maker Faires, events where people come together to experiment in the areas of art, science, engineering and technology.
So, do you have what it takes to become a maker You need to be creative and willing to play around with some new technologies. You should also want to share your ideas with others. Perhaps most importantly, you can’t be afraid of failure. Creators hardly ever get it right on the first try. Be brave, be creative, be co-operative and have fun!
58.What can we infer from Paragraph 2 ( )
A.Raspberry Pi helps realise makers’ ideas more easily than before.
B.Full-sized computers are much more powerful than Arduino.
C.People can communicate with their clocks through Arduino.
D.Many free video games can be created with Raspberry Pi.

3-D films are not new. They first appeared in 1903. The inventors wanted viewers to feel like they were really inside the film they were watching! When you watch a 3-D film, you feel as if the people on the screen are close enough to touch and that the airplane flying at you is flying right off the screen. To watch 3-D films, you may need to wear special glasses. Usually, people buy or borrow the glasses in the cinema. But have you ever thought of making one pair by yourself
Here are tips for making your own 3-D glasses.
① Get some card boards. Cut out the shape of glasses. Make sure you can see through each hole when you hold it up to your eyes.
② Get some red and light blue acetate (醋酸透明塑胶片).
③ Glue the blue acetate on the right hole and the red on the left one.
Next time when you go to watch a 3-D film, don’t forget to take your own handmade glasses!

Dr Martin Luther King was one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. There are many lessons we can learn from him about being a better person and a better leader. Take these 4 points of his wisdom (名言) for example.

★ Believe that you are somebody. King said,
“Don’t allow anybody to make you feel that you’re nobody. Always feel that you are people of great worth, and always feel that your life has meaning.”
★ Happiness comes from making others happy. Bring joy to someone else’s life without thinking about what you can get in return. King explained,
“Those who are not looking for happiness are most likely to find it, because those who are looking for it forget that the best way to be happy is to find happiness for others.”
★ Let hope last forever. Research shows that hope helps patients live longer. Wake up with hope every day even if you’ve lost a job, money, your home or loved ones. King said,

In many places the weather changes during the year. These changes are called seasons. In the north and south there are four seasons in a year. At the North Pole and the South Pole, there are only two seasons. In tropical(热带的)places near the earth’s equator(赤道), there are two seasons: a “wet” season and a “dry” season. Each season brings changes. They are important for plants and animals that live in different parts of the world.
Spring starts when the day and night are the same length. The weather gets warmer and sunnier. Trees and plants start to grow. Many animals have their babies in spring.
Summer begins on the longest day of the year. In the north this is on June 21st or 22nd. Summer is usually the warmest and sunniest time of the year. Fruit grows faster on trees and plants. Young animals grow bigger and stronger.
Autumn starts when the day and night are the same length again. During autumn, the leaves change color and fall down from the trees. Some animals collect food before winter comes.
Winter begins on the shortest day of the year. In the north this is on December 21st or 22nd. The weather is colder and in some places there is lots of snow. Plants and trees stop growing. Some animals, like bats and bears, find places to hide and sleep. This is calledhibernation.

There are different kinds of museums in the world. A new museum, I think, may turn you off your dinner. It is the Disgusting (令人作呕的) Food Museum. It opened in October in 2018 in Malmo, Sweden. The ticket for adults is about $19 and for children and the aged it’s about $15. The museum collects 80 of the world’s “most disgusting foods”, like sheep eyeball juice, stinky tofu, cooked guinea pigs and Jell-O salad.
You might remember the museum’s founder, Dr Samuel West, who set up the Museum of Failure, which is also located in Sweden. “When I opened the Museum of Failure, I was amazed at the influence (影响) it had. If a simple fun exhibit could change people’s ideas about failure, what other assumptions (设想) could an exhibit change ” Dr West once said. He told the reporter why he opened the Disgusting Food Museum. He said he was studying the influence of meat on the environment. This made him think about other sources of protein(蛋白质), like bugs (昆虫). “If you ask people to eat bugs, they may say ‘that’s disgusting’, but maybe I can make them think differently.” said Dr West. The museum changes people’s ideas about food that looks disgusting. It might also make them think about other food sources.
When it comes to “disgusting” food, some people may think it is disgusting. However, people in other parts of the world may think the food is totally normal. That’s because the food is their usual diet and they often eat it.
“We could eat any food, but our culture tells us what is delicious and what is not. I hope the opening of the museum can make people know and try to accept the ‘disgusting’ food from all over the world.” Dr West said. “You can see, touch, smell and taste it in our museum. One of my worries is that it will smell bad here.”

Julia Donaldson is an English writer and she is famous for her stories for children.
She has written over 150 books and more than 20 plays, and won many awards (奖项) for her work.
In 2013, people placed a large number of paper dolls (洋娃娃) in London. They tried to set the Guinness World Record for the longest paper doll. The lovely paper dolls were made by children from around the world to celebrate the publication of the book Paper dolls, one of Julia Donaldson’s best-selling books.
Julia was born in London in 1948. Julia’s mother was a singer and her father played the cello (大提琴). She grew up with her younger sister Mary. Julia and Malcolm got married in 1972 and moved to Brighton in 1974. Julia sent a tape of her songs to the BBC and began writing songs for children’s TV programmes. Her big break came in 1993, when a company asked to turn her songs into children’s books.
Julia’s most famous book, The Gruffalo, was written in 1999. The book has been translated into over 40 languages, sold more than 10 million copies and has appeared in both theaters and cinemas.

Homework is your teachers’ way of knowing how much you understand in class. But sometimes there is much homework. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.
Make a Homework Plan
Understand the assignment (作业). Write it down in your notebook, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher in or after class than to remember later that night,
Start right away. Homework doesn’t mean you have to do it at home. Use your free time in school. The more you do in school, the less you have to do at night.
Arrange (安排) your time. If you don’t finish your homework in school, think about how much homework left and what else is going on that day. Most junior high school students have between 1 and 2 hours of homework a night. But if there is too much homework the day, you’ll need to spend more time on homework.
Watch Where You Work
Find a quiet place. The kitchen table was OK when you were younger and homework didn’t require too much concentration. But now you’ll do best if you can find a place to get away from noise, like a bedroom or study.
Avoid studying on your bed. Sit at a desk that is comfortable to work at. Put away your devices when you study. Just placing your phone where you can see it can be a distraction (干扰). That makes homework take longer.
Get to Work
Do with the hardest assignment first. You have the most energy and focus when you begin Later, when you’re tired, you can focus on the simpler things.
Keep moving ahead. Don’t spend too much time on a very difficult problem, because this can mess up (搞糟) your homework schedule for the rest of the night. If you need to, ask an adult for help. Just don’t pick someone you’ll chat with all night, or you’ll never get it done!
110.What is the writer’s opinion (看法) on the homework
A.All the homework must be done at home.
B.All the homework must be done in school.
C.Some homework can be done in school.
D.Most of the homework should be done at home.
111.Where do you think we should do our homework according to the passage
A. B. C. D.
112.If you meet with a very difficult problem, what will you do
A.Think it over until you finish it. B.Have a good sleep after finishing it.
C.Ask our parents or others for help. D.Choose someone to chat with to relax.
113.What’s the best title for the passage
A.How to Make Homework Less Work B.How to Make a Study Plan
C.How to Do Your Homework D.Where to Do Your Homework
A blog by Sascha Marr, aged 14
My hobby is making shoes. I’ve always liked designing things. I remember drawing clothes and shoes when I was eight, and I made my first skirt aged nine. At eleven, I started making shoes, and I now spend my free time doing that.
I became interested in making shoes when my cousin told me about an online shoemaking course that he was doing. I immediately wanted to do one, too. Mum booked (为……预约) me on a four-day course at the I Can Make Shoes School in London to see if I liked it, and then I did a ten-day course there in the summer holidays.
I loved the courses. I made four pairs of shoes! I couldn’t believe it. The teachers were excellent. That’s the best thing about the classes. They made us work really hard but they wanted all their students to have fun, too.
I’ve made about 15 pairs of shoes now. At the moment, I’m making a pair of training shoes using an old pair of jeans, but I’ve used all kinds of different things before, from old leather(皮革)handbags to old cotton dresses!
Making shoes has changed my plans for the future. I know now that I want to be a designer(设计师), but not a shoe designer. I’ve decided I’ll do home design. I’ve designed lots of shoes and also some clothes, so I’d like to try something new.
