Starting high school is a big step for any teenager, for there are many things about high school that are different from your old school environment, and you will experience many changes.
You will face entering a new school, making new friends in a new class, and getting to know new teachers. These teachers will usually have higher academic expectations than your middle school or junior high school teachers. They want to help you get into college; they expect you to study hard and improve yourself.
Although these are all big changes, they are nothing you can’t handle. There are many different useful resources to help you deal with any problem. Your teachers, parents and friends are there to help you transition (过渡) into this great new time in your life. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to any of these people, there are many helpful hotlines you can call to talk anonymously (匿名地). High school may be a time of change, but these changes should be for the better.
Your high school years are a great time in your life. To fully enjoy your high school experience, try to deal with the situations of your life with which you are not happy. If you are feeling pressured to do something you feel wrong, talk to a friend or parent to find a solution. If you are not succeeding academically, find a teacher or someone else to help you improve. If you feel isolated socially, try to join a school club or group to make new friends.
High school may seem rather difficult at first, but you will come to appreciate everything about your experience at last.

7. For whom is the text written
A. Parents. B. High school freshmen.

31 years ago, Allen Johnson was a passenger in a van when a truck hit it. Johnson survived, but his left arm was crushed beyond repair, and he lost his memory for two years.
His pilot license was removed and he could no longer follow his passion for diving. But he had been sailing since he was 16. So, in 2004, he decided to buy a boat, fitting it out so he could sail it single-handedly. “I didn’t know then if I could sail with one hand.“ he says. ”But I had always thought I could do anything if I put my mind to it.”
Within a year, Johnson had taken on the challenge of being the first one-armed sailor to tour around the British Isles. Then he crossed the Atlantic alone in 2008. Last year he became the first sailor with a disability to tour around the globe.
Sailing single-handed for weeks requires mental, as well as physical, strength, especially when you are alone. So how does he do it It’s a question that makes the yachtsman (帆船运动员) laugh. “When you have seven children it’s lovely to have a little time on your own! It’s awesome,” he jokes.” I do a log every hour, and my diary, and I read a few books. I have very little sleep.” “I’m a sociable person: I do like lots of people around. Answering emails and chatting over Facebook can help stop any loneliness,” he adds.
When Johnson made his first Atlantic crossing, he was disappointed to have his peace and quiet life broken by his arrival on land. But, he says, he threw himself into meeting new people. In between adventures, he likes sailing with people who haven’t tried it before or get involved in yacht races with friends. Perhaps the main reason for his success in adjusting to life after a big adventure, he says, is that he always has an idea for a new one in his back pocket. “It keeps me ticking over—there’s always something new to do. I just like challenges and one leads to another.”
8. Why couldn’t Allen Johnson continue his passion for diving
A. He lost his left arm. B. His license was due.
C. He had a new hobby. D. His memory was poor.
9. How did Johnson spend his time at sea
A. By staying awake. B. By visiting old friends.
C. By attending to his children. D. By keeping himself busy.
10. What mainly leads to Johnson’s successful adjustment to life after a big adventure
A. Socializing with new people. B. Scheduling new adventures.
C. Coaching new yachtsmen D. Organizing yacht races.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Sailing around the world for fun. B. Adapting to life in face of challenges.
C. A childhood dream coming true. D. A terrible accident causing misadventure.
D
Mozart was a genius, but he struggled like an average person during early twenties. He had to work to make ends meet. Underpaid and unsatisfied by his average performances, he felt a burning desire to devote more time and energy to his art. So after a period of doubt and thinking, that's exactly what he did. He quit his job and began what turned out to be the most creative period of his life.
Even if you never hope to reach Mozart’s level of mastery, you may relate to his need to break free from convention (传统). Maybe you’ve done everything right — stood out at school, and got a high-paying job — but you’re tired of being just like everyone else. Maybe you long to achieve something that is unmistakably you.
What, then, is holding you back Rich Karlgaard, the publisher of Forbes magazine and author of Late Bloomers, argues that our culture’s obsession (痴迷) with early achievement discourages us from going after what we love. Instead of having varied interests, studying widely, and taking our time — essentials (要素) for self-discovery — we’re encouraged to pass tests, become specialists right away, and pursue safe and secure careers. As a result, most of us end up choosing professional excellence over personal achievement, and often we lose ourselves in the process.
As you move forward, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, it’s never too late to “become” yourself. Aristotle, for example, didn’t fully devote himself to writing and philosophy until he was nearly 50. There are also benefits to taking a long, winding path to achievement. Remember that age usually brings wisdom, self-knowledge, and creativity. This is one reason the average age of founders of high-growth start-ups is 45.
If you ever get stuck, think of Joanne, a talented and creative woman who bounced from job to job throughout her twenties. She felt like a total failure. But she took that feeling of hopelessness and chose to do what she’d always wanted to do: write fantasy novels for children. As she would later recount, “I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was.”
You’ve probably heard of her. Her pen name is J.K. Rowling.
Now get to work.
12. What does the example of Mozart (in the first paragraph) show
A. Genius is nothing but labor.
B. Suffering makes a man wise.
C. You should stick to what inspires you.
D. You need to be different from others.
13. In Rich Karlgaard's opinion, what prevents people from going after what they love
A. Desire for early achievement.
B. Too wide a range of interests.
C. A waste of time on self-discovery.
D. A wrong choice in professions.
14. What does the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph imply
A. Age can be an advantage in one's life.
B. Failure is of great value to success.
C. 45 is the right age for one to start business.
D. The path to achievement is full of difficulties.
15. What's die main purpose of the passage
A. To share success stories of some famous people.
B. To stress the importance of professional excellence.
C To analyze the reasons for failure to make early achievements.
D. To encourage people to become themselves whatever the age.

This is the evidence for each question’s answer.
Step 2 ___19___.
This will help you remember your notes visually. Write questions in red, definitions in blue, conclusions in green.

B. Suffering makes a man wise.

A. Desire for early achievement.

14. What does the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph imply
A. Age can be an advantage in one's life.
B. Failure is of great value to success.
C. 45 is the right age for one to start business.

When you do start writing, design your notes as a series of questions raised by the teacher’s lecture, filling your own answers. This way, you’re recording the importance of the teacher’s saying and not just raw facts. When you do need to include data, add only the most important points under each question. This is the evidence for each question’s answer.
Step 2 ___19___.
This will help you remember your notes visually. Write questions in red, definitions in blue, conclusions in green.

前文“Note-taking is an important skill in and out of school, you can make the difference between passing and failing a test, being good at a job or even enjoying a complicated movie. (在学校内外,记笔记都是一项重要的技能,它关系到考试的及格和不及格,关系到你是否擅长一项工作,甚至关系到你是否喜欢一部复杂的电影)”引入记笔记的话题,说明其重要性,后文“We’re taught from a very young age that when a teacher starts delivering a load of information, we should write down as much what they are saying as possible. This is rather inefficient way to take notes. (我们从小就被教导,当老师开始传递大量信息时,我们应该尽可能多地写下他们所说的内容。这种记笔记的方法效率很低)”说明我们从小被教育的记笔记方式效率很低,因此D项“But unluckily, most people don’t know how to take notes (但不幸的是,大多数人不知道如何记笔记)”符合语境,点明很多人不会记笔记,和前文构成转折,后文是对其具体说明。故选D。
【17题详解】
前文“Note-taking should actually act as a form of learning. (记笔记实际上应该是一种学习方式)”说明记笔记的作用,因此F项“It helps you work your way through the lesson as the teacher is giving it (它可以帮助你在老师讲课的过程中摸索出自己的思路)”符合语境,解释其作用是帮助摸索思路,承接前文,其中的It指代前文的Note-taking。故选F。
前文“Don’t worry about catching every single thing your teacher’s saying. (不要担心听懂老师说的每一句话)”提醒不必担忧弄懂每句话,后文“trying to understand the lecture (试着理解讲座内容)”建议去理解,因此C项“Spend more time listening (花更多的时间倾听)”符合语境,建议去倾听,起到过渡的作用,后文的understand建立在其中的listening上。故选C。
【19题详解】
空处是段落标题,需统领段落内容。后文“This will help you remember your notes visually. Write questions in red, definitions in blue, conclusions in green. (这将帮助你在视觉上记住你的笔记。用红色写问题,用蓝色写定义,用绿色写结论)”具体说明如何用彩色笔记笔记,以及这样做的好处,因此A项“Use colored pens (使用彩色笔)”符合语境,契合段落内容,选项内容为后文的This指代的对象,其中的colored与后文的red、blue和green呼应。故选A。
前文“Try teaching the materials to your classmate. (试着把这些材料教给你的同学)”建议用笔记材料去教同学,因此E项“This will be a great marker to see if you’ve actually learned anything (这将是一个很好的标志,看看你是否真的学到了什么)”符合语境,解释这样做的原因,承接前文,其中的This指代前一句的内容。
