Recently, I had the unexpected pleasure of witnessing a basketball game played by local villagers in Guizhou province. Despite being amateurs, the teams played with professional-level format and refereeing (裁判), creating an intense atmosphere. The rescheduled final game of the Guizhou country basketball league, known as the
“Village Basketball Association (VBA),” took place in Taipan Village.
The game attracted a large audience, even on a weekday. The live stream of the game on social media platforms received 5.66 million views, generating buzz with hashtags like “what does ‘sold-out’ look like.” So, why are grassroots competitions like this more attractive to people like me than professional games I believe it’s
because sports arise from the grassroots level, allowing everyone to connect socially and find common ground.
The VBA reminded me of a basketball game I experienced during my visit to Yangshuo in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Bored of the scenic landscapes, I took a break and joined the locals and other visitors on the
sidelines. Sitting on the bare ground, I felt so authentic and free that it released all my thoughts and emotions.
Similarly, in the VBA game, the winning team received modest prizes like live ducks and cooked meat,
showcasing the genuine and down-to-earth nature of the competition. I even wondered if the players were cooks
or farmers who could prepare the food right off the court.
The sudden popularity of the VBA can originate from the pervasive influence of social media and people’s desire to explore something different from their immediate surroundings. However, what truly resonates (共鸣) and has the potential for further growth is the pursuit ( 追求) of spiritual fulfillment. Grassroots sports offer an accessible and fulfilling experience, making them an ideal destination for individuals seeking a deeper connection.
4 .What made the basketball game in Guizhou attractive
A .The professional-level players. B .The large number of viewers.
C .The involvement of local villagers. D .The VBA offers better prizes.
5 .How did the author feel while watching the basketball game in Yangshuo
A .A connection with other audience. B .A sense of authenticity and freedom.
C .A sense of loneliness from the locals. D .A sense of boredom from the landscape.
6 .According to the last paragraph, which has NOT contributed to the popularity of the VBA
A .The impact of social media.
B .The attempt to achieve a spiritual satisfaction.
C .The eagerness for the newness in their surroundings.
D .The perfect opportunity to realize one’s sportsmanship.
7 .What’s the best title of the passage
A .VBA—an Online Hit B .My Special Encounter with a VBA Game
C .The Game for Prosperity and Happiness D .VBA—a Path to Grassroots’ Success

Music is powerful when it comes to fitness. It can help prevent you from feeling uncomfortable, encourage you to push harder, and just make workouts more fun. But what it can’t do According to a research, is improving
your overall performance at least not for certain sports.
A study took a closer look at music in sports. Researchers asked 150 volunteers to throw a ball into a basket. For the first phase of the study, participants threw the ball from a fixed point. They threw the ball while listening to music of their choices, while not listening to music, or while listening to music the researcher selected. For the second phase, they were able to choose where to stand, when throwing the ball and performed the same activity
with the different music choices.
The study found that listening to music, whether it was music of the volunteers’ choice or a song chosen for them, didn’t make the participants more or less likely to get the ball in the basket. What it did do was make the
participants more likely to take risks, especially for males who were allowed to choose their own music. In other
words, music may pump you up. It may help you work out harder and longer than you would without it. But no
matter what song you listen to, it won’t help you get that ball into the basket.
Another study took a look at how music tempo (节奏) might affect exercise. Researchers found that listening to high-tempo music makes people feel like they’re working less while also doing more good to their bodies. The study also found that the beneficial effects of high-tempo music were greatest for people who were walking or
running and were felt the least for those who were doing high-intensity (高强度) exercise such as weightlifting.
High-tempo music has between 170-190 beats per minute. Sites like jog.fm can help you find the perfect
songs at the perfect tempo. Find some songs you like and start moving!
8 .What were the participants forbidden to do in the first phase of the first study
A .Select their favourite music. B .Stand at the fixed point.
C .Throw the ball from any point. D .Avoid music when throwing the ball.
9 .What words can best explain the part “pump you up” underlined in Paragraph 3
A .Make you full of energy soon again. B .Make you stand out in front of others.
C .Make you feel much better than usual. D .Make you more willing to do something.
10 .In what situation should we avoid listening to high-tempo music
A .Bicycling. B .Weightlifting. C .Dancing. D .Running.
11 .What should be the author’s attitude towards listening to music in sports
A .Supportive. B .Indifferent. C .Doubtful. D .Worried.
D
When watching sports events, we often notice athletes with their earphones on while preparing in the locker room or entering the stadium. They keep their eyes shut, and gently nod along the beats. It seems as if the music is
empowering them and toughening them up for the competition. But is there any science behind such practice
According to a recent research, it turns out there is. Music actually does make us feel powerful, but not all songs have the same effect. The research was led by Dennis Hsu of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in the US. His team had people listen to 31 songs of different types. The listeners felt powerful after listening to some songs, such as Queen’s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited’s Get Ready for This. Researchers also found that high-power music made people want to take control in social events and come first in competition. As for the reason for music’s magical power, Hsu’s team came up with one possible explanation:
When people hear music that expresses a sense of power, they mimic these feelings in their mind.
So, when choosing music, we need to look at the type of music. In previous research by the Music in
Exercise and Sport Group at Brunel University in London, they found that pop was perfect for slower, more
repetitive-type tasks. Dance music was found to be best suited to strength and weight training because it’s “fast and rhythmical”. During high-intensity workouts, though, you’d better not listen to rock. Its different changes in
tempo can affect your rhythm.
12 .Why athletes were mentioned in the first paragraph
A .To list things athletes have in common with other people.
B .To describe athletes’ common habits before sports games.
C .To get readers to wonder whether music matters in sports.
D .To explain why athletes like listening to music before games.
13 .Which of the following statements might Dennis Hsu agree with
A .Listening to music can always boost the athlete’s performance.
B .People listening to powerful music are likely to produce similar feelings.
C .The result of a game is mainly affected by the physical condition of the players.
D .Most athletes don’t know the effects of high-power music on their performance.
14 .If you want to cool down after exercise, what kind of music will be suitable
A .Pop music. B .Dance music. C .Rock. D .Blues.
15 .How did the author make his points clear
A .With comparisons. B .Through examples.
C .By giving general rules. D .Through listing figures.

I entered my freshman year of high school with a philosophy: work hard and do whatever 1 could succeed at. I thought I would make some impressive achievements in this way. I wouldn’t waste my time on areas I was not
good at.
And this philosophy served me well. I worked hard on my lessons and piano practice, which I had talent for, and got the results I wanted. usually in the shape of good grades and rewards. My friends laughed about my
all-or-nothing attitude, but I thought it was the only sure path to success.
At the beginning of the second year of high school. I fully intended to keep the same attitude. Then I joined the school cross-country running team. a year after I had watched cross-country races. I joined mainly because my brother was on the team; he was entering his senior year, and I wanted to spend more time with him before he left for college. Also, many of my friends were on the team. and they had been trying to persuade me to join them for
months.
When I came to the first practice. I was filled with optimism and dreamed of being an excellent runner. But
as the distance we ran each practice gradually increased. I realized however hard I tried. I was the slowest on the
team. And the muscle injury was often intolerable. What was the point of putting me through so much pain I’d
never be an excellent runner. For the first few weeks. I had been thinking of giving up.
Then we had our first cross-country meet. When we got off the bus at Lamoille High School. dressed in our blue uniforms with our team name shown on the shirts. the sight of the other teams warming up made me anxious. I thought I would let my team down. And I guessed my coach and teammates would be disappointed at my
performance and blame me. This thought made me decide to quit the cross-country running team after the race.
Now. looking at the tough course made up of a series of short. steep(陡峭的)hills. I stood silently with my

felt enormous pressure on my shoulders. I was increasingly frustrated as I watched more and more runners rush
past me. I tried my best, but I still the slowest on the team. I even couldn’t find any runners around me. I thought they may be running to the final line now. It was a tiring course. Finally, I stopped running and struggled to walk
up the last challenging hill. Just then, I heard people calling my name from the top of the hill.
Surprisingly, my coach and teammates were smiling and cheering for me. I was confused and
embarrassed because my performance was terrible. Anyway, I stopped caring about my performance and ran to
the final point with all my might. As I was jogging up the last section of the hill, my coach and teammates all
applauded me for my efforts. Not until then did I realize my coach and teammates didn’t care how fast I ran . I learned I shouldn’t attach too much importance to the result. In fact, the process is more important. After that
meet, I continued cross-country and focused on enjoying the journey.
