Smart Homes In My Eyes
Smart homes have made life easier.
Firstly, we can control and monitor many aspects of our homes remotely such as air conditioners. Secondly,
smart homes promote energy efficiency. When no one is in the house, they can go into an energy-efficient mode,
which helps protect the environment. Furthermore, smart homes keep us secure. Integrated sensors and smart locks
provide us with peace of mind, allowing us to detect potential dangers.
I believe as technology continues to develop, we will be enjoying more advanced innovations and various
integrated devices. Nevertheless, it will take many years before the dream comes true mainly due to the high cost and
some people’s unwillingness to live in these new homes.
第二节:读后续写

Paragraph1: As Susan hurried home, this conflict went on in her mind. When she passed through the gate,
her eyes fell upon the wooden seat. Instantly, the words of the Golden Rule rang in her ears. Turning around
quickly, she raced along the road breathlessly until she found herself again at farmer Jason’s gate. “Why are
you back again ” shouted the cold fellow angrily, as he saw Susan again at his side. “Sir, you gave me two
bills, instead of one,” she said in a trembling voice. “Two bills Did I Let me see. Well, so I did. Why didn’t
you bring it back sooner You want to keep it yourself ” he blamed.

Paragraph2: Susan’s face became red with embarrassment and annoyance. Tears rolling down her
cheeks, she loudly argued that she returned it almost the moment she discovered the truth. Jason looked at the
child, seemingly touched. Putting his hand in his pocket, he drew out a few coins and handed them to her.
“No, sir. I thank you,” sobbed Susan, “I do not want to be paid for doing right. I only wish you would not
think me dishonest.” After hearing this, Jason said sorry to her, ashamed. Susan returned home with a
lightened heart. Never would she forget her mother’s Golden rule in her life.

The Mattel toy company created a new Barbie doll with the famous British scientist Jane Goodall as its model.
The company issued the new doll this week, the latest member of the Barbie toymaker’s “Inspiring Women”. Mattel
said the doll, made from used plastic, honored Goodall’s deep research on chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in Tanzania and
her efforts to protect the wild animals.
The doll was dressed in a light brown shirt and shorts, much like that seen in many images of Goodall at work
in Africa. It also came with a notebook, telescopes and another doll modeled on the real chimp Goodall named David
Greybeard. He was the first chimpanzee with which she built trust in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park. The
relationship permitted her to study the animals extremely closely. “I wanted a doll to be me even before this idea
came up,” the 88- year-old scientist said. She praised Mattel for developing new Barbies standing for a wider number
of working women.
Lisa McKnight agreed. She is the Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls for Mattel.

She said, “We hope that this collection inspires kids to learn more about green careers and how they can protect the
planet, and act out stories about environmental protection through doll play.”
Goodall started her research in what is now Tanzania in the 1960s. She produced much research on wild
chimpanzees over the years. She recorded how they made and used tools, lived in communities, and showed a high
level of emotional understanding.
Goodall wanted to teach children that if they wanted to have a good effect on the changing environment, they
must act. Goodall said, “Hope is about action on climate change, loss of wildlife, unfriendly lifestyles and pollution.
We reach out to others because there are people working on each one of these problems…”

A charming three-story home sits at the corner of 10th and Center streets on the Georgia Institute of Technology
(Georgine Tech) campus in Atlanta. From the outside, it appears just like any other home, but inside, Georgia Tech
researchers are testing and developing advanced devices to determine which can make the home safer and smarter
— for older adults.
The house is actually a living lab, called the Aware Home, and research conducted there has showed many top
home-related concerns among older adults — unattended cooking, water left running, TVs left on... and doors left
unlocked.
Now, some in-home technologies are in development — or on the market — to address those concerns.

One new device called Inirv React connects your stove (炉具) to a sensor in your home and a smartphone app.
The sensor will automatically turn the stove off if it no longer detects movement around the appliance after a certain
period of time. You can also turn the stove off using your smartphone.
Devices of the future are expected to collect and use date to become smarter, according to Elizabeth Mynatt, a
professor at Georgia Tech. “They will learn more about your habits, your likes, your dislikes, your routines, when
you’re most likely to forget to take your medicine, what are the aspects of your health that need the most attention,”
she said.
With any technology, “most people ask that question ‘How invasive (侵扰的) is it ’. But what we hear from
older adults is that they value the security and the safety that the technology provides for them,” Mynatt said.
75-year-old Albert Bolet of Atlanta thinks most older adults are typically ready to bring technology into their
homes. “People have the misguided impression that seniors are opposed to technology.” said Bolet. “We do
understand wireless technology, and we understand how these things will make things easier. Being independent is
most important in the mind of anybody that gets to be our age or older.”
28. What is the Aware Home
A. A smart house. B. A research lab.
C. A nursing home. D. A science museum.
29. What will Inirv React do when it senses no movement around a stove for long
A. Switch the stove off directly.
B. Give out a warning sound.
C. Activate a sensor in the house.
D. Send a message to a connected phone.
30. What will future smart home devices be like according to Mynatt
A. They will provide medical advice.
B. They will be more like caregivers.
C. They will become more personalized.
D. They will replace caregivers in most case.
31. What did Atbert Bolet say about most seniors
A. They are opposed to new technology.
B. They are willing to use smart home devices.
C. They prefer a simple life without technology.
D. They are becoming more dependent on the Internet.
D
Even though they are lifeless objects, sand dunes (沙丘) can “communicate” with each other, researchers have
found. A team from the University of Cambridge has found that as they move, sand dunes interact with their
downstream neighbours and force them away.
It’s well-known that active sand dunes move around. Generally speaking, smaller dunes move faster and larger
dunes move slower. And what hasn’t been understood is whether and how dunes within a field interact with each
5
{#{QQABaYKQggiAABAAAAhCAwEACkEQkBGCCKoOBAAMsAABQANABAA=}#}
other.
“There are different views on dune interaction: one is that dunes of different sizes will hit each other until they
form one giant dune.” said Karol Bacik, the study’s author. Now, Bacik and his workmates have shown results that
query these explanations.
Water-filled flumes (水槽) are common tools for studying the movement of sand dunes in a lab setting, but the
dunes can only be observed until they reach the end of the flume. Instead, Dr Nathalie Vriend, who led the research,
and the members of her lab designed a circular flume, so that the dunes could be observed for hours, while high-
speed cameras allowed them to record the movement of the dunes.
The two dunes in the study started with the same amount of sand. As the flow began to move across the two
dunes, they started moving. At first, the front dune moved faster than the back dune, but as the experiment continued,
the front dune began to slow down, until the two dunes were moving at almost the same speed. Besides, the type of
flow across the two dunes was observed to be different: the front dune changed the flow’s direction, generated swirls
(旋涡) on the back dune and pushed it away. As the experiment continued, the dunes got further and further apart.
“The next step for the research is to find evidence of large-scale and complex dune migration in deserts. By
tracking clusters of dunes over long periods, we can observe whether measures to change the migration of dunes are
effective or not, which will be a way to cope with the desertification (沙漠化),” Vriend said.
32. What is people’s previous view on sand dunes
A. They can hardly keep active all the time.
B. Dunes have negative effects on each other.
C. Their speed has nothing to do with their size.
D. Dunes of different sizes will eventually mix together.
33. What does the underlined word “query” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Follow. B. Advance. C. Question. D. Understand.
34. What can we learn from the last but one paragraph
A. The front dune is attracted by the back dune.
B. The back dune can change the front dune’s direction.
C. The front dune tries to keep its distance from the back dune.
D. The front and the back dunes will form one giant dune at last.
35. What does Vriend think of the further research on dunes
A. It is worthless. B. It is meaningful.
C. It is challenging. D. It is disappointing.

she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age.
It also listed her favorite sports and provided her phone number. 39
You and your partner will probably have different skills. 40 Over time, both of you will benefit—your
partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship
is that you will always be there to help each other.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事
An old wooden seat that Susan extremely valued often reminded her of mother’s Golden Rule.
Back in the 1930s, the country life was really tough. One day after dinner, Susan’s mother sat on the seat,
announcing to the children the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Susan reflected carefully
and seriously on what her mother had said. She resolved that she would keep in mind and follow the rule.
One Saturday afternoon, she went to farmer Jason’s inn (小旅馆) to get the pay for her mother’s washing for
the guests there, which amounted to five dollars. She found Jason in the yard, who, as all the villagers knew, was
selfish and mean.
His eyes clouded with anger, as he had just finished a quarrel with one of his guests. He held in his hand an open
wallet, full of bills. He barely noticed Susan until she made her request for the money. Instead of shouting at her, as
usual, for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a bank note.
Feeling relieved for escaping from Jason so easily, Susan hurried out of the inn. When carefully putting the
money into her pocket, she discovered that Jason had given her two bills instead of one, and her first reaction was
joy at the unexpected prize. She looked around and there was nobody nearby to share her discovery. “It is mine. All
mine.” she said to herself. “I will buy mum a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to sister Mary, and then
Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for brother Tom too.”
Just at that moment, she realized that Jason must have given the extra money to her by mistake, and therefore
she had no right to own it. But a voice of temptation (诱惑) whispered, “He gave it, and you can keep it. He will
never know, even if it is a mistake. ”
