Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals(信号).
Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic.
Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children
are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside
railway tracks(轨道). The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned
people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train
drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and
stop their trains. A green light was used to mean “take care” and a white lightmeant
“go”.
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train
drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go”. So
九年级英语试题 第 5 页 共 5 页
the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care”
light was changed to white.
During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years
later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel
much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear
and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be
placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross
safely.
Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green
lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they
are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.

According to UNESCO, a large number of children in villages in some African
countries like Kenya and Tanzania do not go to school. They have to work to make
money for their family. And more than half of people in these countries live without
electricity.
A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a
special solar(太阳的)power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called “Solar
Cow”. The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their
children to school by setting up Solar Cows at schools.
Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries(给电池充电)
called “Solar Milks”. The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.
The batteries can only be charged using the Solar Cow, so children have to go to

school to get the electricity. Every day, children put their batteries into the bottom
of their school’s Solar Cow. They go to class while the batteries are being charged.
At the end of the day, they take the charged batteries home.
Each fully-charged Solar Milk battery can charge a mobile phone three or four
times, or a radio once or twice. The battery is also a flashlight, and it can provide ten
hours of light. “My father used to travel two to three hours to the charging shop to
charge his phone, and it cost a lot,” a boy said. “But now, he can use the battery I
bring from school to charge his phone at home.”
Since 2018, this company has set up two Solar Cows in Kenya and one in

Wang Haiyan’s hometown is known as the birthplace of the folk art. When Wang

thirty years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppets are made of hard leather(皮革). The leather is cut out in the

the knife,” Wang said. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only
move the leather in your left hand. 79 The steps of making shadow puppets
are so difficult that it’s hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.

When Jan and Brian Dutcher moved to San Diego for Brian’s new job at San

Diego State University, the neighbors smiled and introduced themselves. But there
were no “bring a plate” invitations, no car pooling(拼车)for their daughters Liza, 12
and Erin, 15.
“The families really didn’t know each other,” says Jan. “We are far from relatives.
Neighbors are our family.”
So Jan, an artist, decided to repeat a project she had done for Liza’s fifth-grade
class. They invited each neighbor to paint his or her face on a big canvas(帆布画布).
The finished piece would become the new family photo.
First, Jan painted a grid (网格)on the canvas and put it up in the garage(车
库)with a table of paints nearby. Then whenever she was home, the “art room” door
was up, with an open invitation for neighbors to paint. The first to stop in were kids
riding by. “They thought it was cool,” says Jan, “but the adults weren’t so keen. They
were afraid they would mess it up.” But as words slowly spread, they came. Some
used their driver’s license photos asmodels. Some came to see who had painted, or
if they could recognize who was who.
Then something started to happen with the project on and on. In Jan’s garage,
neighbors began to chat about schools, jobs and families. Almost daily. Wendy,
who lived across the street and was seriously ill, came in her wheelchair to join
them too. Neighbors began to offer their support.
This year has been different in the neighborhood. Families take turns hosting
happy hours. “We’re watching over each other now just like in the painting,” says
Jan.
