In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education(VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard(跷跷板) act,” he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders, and his uncle was standing on the boy’s father’s shoulders!”
The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.
24. What can we know about the children in the Stardust Circus
A. They missed the classroom. B. Most of them lived downtown.
C. They were dreaming of travelling. D. They were lacking in regular schooling.
25. What can we learn from the passage
A. John taught the gymnast to perform in the air.
B. Teachers of the program had a flexible schedule.
C. John’s dream came true as a volunteer in the circus.
D. The couple were fed up with the sound of lions roaring.
26. How did John probably feel after meeting the little lions
A. Scared. B. Excited. C. Calm. D. Regretful.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Running with Circus B. Missing Regular School
C. Enjoying Retirement D. Travelling with Animals

Just as China sets the world pace in e-commerce, it’s doing the same for live streaming(直播). More than 100 million viewers watch a live online video event every month. As an e-commerce tool, the live streaming format typically involves a famous person showing a product and answering questions from a digital audience. It takes place in real time and usually on a smartphone, which accounts for some 95% of e-commerce activity in China.
China is filled with live streaming webcasts, much of it non-commercial, such as young people discussing their lives, offering diet tips, etc. But live streaming has also become one of the most cost-effective tools for e-commerce in China.
Why are consumers and brands both hugging live streaming
First, there’s a functional advantage to live streaming. It allows experts to show the product being used, to show various techniques, and to point out the results. There’s also a feeling of authenticity(真实性) that comes from live streaming because the audience can interact with the experts by asking questions in real time.
Consumers feel that they are actually handling the product themselves. Instead of picking a product off a shelf, they are now part of the process, shaping the outcome from the convenience of the living room sofa. The best live streaming allows room for a joke, or even a small mistake. After all, this is how friends talk with one another. As consumers grow in experience and taste, they would rather participate in a chat. Live streaming invites the brand into the home in much the same way you would invite a friend.
Consumers often feel a sense of empowerment(赋予权力). The brand must react quickly and positively to viewers in real time because consumers have the power to hold them responsible for their products through questions.
Live streaming can also be particularly effective for new-to-market brands who do not have the ability to create a buzz because it provides a guarantee that the product is used, accepted and loved.
28. What is the purpose of live streaming as an e-commerce tool
A. To chat with young people about life. B. To promote products on smartphones.
C. To offer tips on healthy eating on the web D. To communicate with audience on the phone.
29. Which of the following is a reason for live streaming’s popularity
A. It allows real-time interaction between customers and the brand.
B. It empowers customers to decide who are responsible for products.
C. It makes sure that new-to-market brands become best selling goods.
D. It offers chances for customers to pick products off shelves by themselves.
30. The underlined phrase “create a buzz” in the last paragraph probably means
A. introduce their products effectively B. react quickly and positively to consumers
C. be responsible for their products D. attract the attention of the pubic
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. China Is Leading the World in E-commerce
B. Differences between Offline Business and Live Streaming
C. China’s Live Streaming is Booming — Here’s How It Works
D. Want to Experience a New Way of Living Join in Live Streaming!
D
Imagine walking into your local grocery store on a freezing January day to pick up freshly harvested cabbage, juicy sweet strawberries, and ripe red tomatoes — all of which were harvested at a local farm only hours before you’d arrived. You might be imagining buying that fresh produce from vertical farms where farmers can grow indoors year-round by controlling light, temperature, water, and carbon dioxide levels as well. Generally, fresh produce grown in vertical farms travels only a few miles to reach grocery store shelves compared to conventional produce, which can travel thousands of miles by truck or plane.
Beyond providing fresh local produce, vertical agriculture could help increase food production and expand agricultural operations as the world’s population is projected to go beyond 9 billion by 2050. And by that same year, two out of every three people are expected to live in urban areas. Producing fresh greens and vegetables close to these growing urban populations could help meet growing global food demands in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way by reducing distribution chains to offer lower emissions, providing higher-nutrient produce, and completely reducing water usage and run off.
Recently, the US Department of Agriculture and Energy held a workshop focusing on vertical agriculture and sustainable urban ecosystems. At this workshop, field experts were responsible for thought-provoking presentations followed by small group discussions focusing on areas such as plant breeding, pest management, and engineering. Workshop team-workers from public and private departments worked together to identify the challenge, needs, and opportunities for vertical farming. A report on this workshop will be produced by research secretaries to help inform departmental strategic planning efforts for research focus and funding opportunities.
Experts are excited about the potential opportunities vertical agriculture presents to address food security. The National Institute for Food and Agriculture also has funding opportunities that could support future vertical agriculture conference and research. Similarly, the Agricultural Research Service is working on a project to increase U. S. Tomato production and quality in green houses and other protected-environments.
32. What is the common characteristic of produce from the vertical agriculture
A. Natural. B. Eco-friendly. C. Inexpensive. D. Low-nutrient.
33. Why does the author mention “urban populations” in Paragraph 2
A. To explain a rule. B. To clarify a definition. C. To present a reason. D. To make a comparison.
34. How does the author introduce the daily routine at the workshop
A. In order of time. B. Via the division of labour.
C. In order of importance. D. Via the discussion of problems.
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards vertical farming
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Curious. D. Worried.

You probably already know what self-regulation is, even if you are not aware of the term. 36
Self-regulation refers to the ability to control your behavior and manage your thoughts and emotions in appropriate ways. It involves being aware of your behavior and how it helps you reach your goals. 37 The Cambridge dictionary defines it as “The ability to make yourself do things you know you should do even when you do not want to” The American Psychological Association defines it as “the control of one’s behavior through self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self-reinforcement.”

In addition, self-regulation can also help people handle conflict and strengthen relationships and overall well-being. It can help people calm down after something annoying has happened and refocus their attention on other tasks. 39 People with good self-regulation skills are able to assess whether their behavior is appropriate and can redirect themselves as needed.
40 So we can try different approaches to find the proper one. You may be able to keep stress under control by using stress management techniques such as deep breathing, exercise, and getting enough sleep.
Self-regulation is an essential skill for physical, social, emotional and mental well-being. It does not always come easily to people, but there are techniques that can help you develop and strengthen your self-regulation.
A. There are different definitions of self-regulation.
B. Take time each day to make new plans for tomorrow.
C. In fact, like many coping skills, self-regulation can be improved.
D. It takes firm determination and a strong mind to develop a new habit.

Every fall, my family and I would mark dead trees, cut them down, haul(拉拽) the wood and store it in the basement. On Christmas Eve, the basement was half full of dry wood. As usual, my sister Shelly and I were home from school, and she did as either of us had done a thousand times before: checked the stove in the hall, turned over a few more logs and slammed(砰地关上) the stove door shut.
At the time, I was upstairs having a sink full of dishes to wash, homework to tackle and my grandfather, who was mentally disordered and hated by our family, to care for. Stomping(跺脚) around the kitchen, I thought about how I couldn’t wait to finish washing. The house seemed a little smoky, but that wasn’t unusual since it often went that way after the stove had new logs to chew up. I simply waved the smoke away and continued my business, meanwhile daydreaming of getting away from my grandfather. Suddenly, my sister Shelly hurried in and said, “Don’t you think it’s a little too smoky in here ” I shrugged, saying nothing, and kept washing. But after another minute, I knew something went wrong.
Without a word to each other, we shot through the kitchen and stared in disbelief as smoke and flames boiled out from the hall. A flush of panic sweeping over me, I hurried Shelly into leading our grandfather out before I was ready to call 911. Unfortunately, my phone was dead. I glanced out the window and saw Shelly, in a sweater, jeans and slippers and my grandfather, in pants, a T-shirt and socks, trembling in the bone-biting snow, with no place to await help. With the only neighbor living far away, we were likely to die in the freezing cold outside. But if we stayed inside, smoke would surely choke us. However, if I could get my grandfather’s phone in his room and probably, if the flames didn’t spread far, there would be a slim chance of survival.

应用文
As is illustrated in the picture, a child is excessively fond of online games. Hooked by online games, he will put anything else aside, not to mention his homework. His parent has great difficulty pulling him back into reality.
Being addicted to online games has posed too many drawbacks. Firstly, the students don’t concentrate their undivided attention on study, thus falling behind educationally. Secondly, addiction to online games usually leads to less communication, which separates the children from their friends and parents. What’s more, it’s harmful to their health if they sit in front of the computer all day long.
Accordingly it’s high time that we should take effective measures to get rid of the addiction. On the one hand, students are supposed to possess the ability to discipline themselves. On the other hand, it’s advisable that parents and teachers should limit the online time. Only in this way can they cultivate a healthy lifestyle and hold a positive attitude towards life.
读后续写
Though overwhelmed by extreme panic, I decided to take a chance. The house was engulfed in an immense stream of flame, with roaring fire almost swallowing me. Fully aware as I was that a long and tough journey was ahead, I wasn’t defeated. Rather, I bent over and inched forward. After what seemed like a century, I reached the destination, alive. As the smoke thickened, I felt my throat and lungs burning. Glancing around the room, I located the phone and grabbed it immediately. Before I could celebrate, raging fire prepared to chew me up.
Fire sent me into despair before the familiar figure of my grandfather came into sight. Fearless and swift, he shot through the flames without hesitation, behaving like an iron man. With firm determination, he seized me and lost no time in racing out. Suddenly, house beams collapsed, striking him down. I, with all my strength, lifted him to his feet and supported him out. Luckily, we made it. After that, my grandfather murmured unconsciously, “Fire consumed the Christmas gift for you.” I felt a lump in my throat, hugging him tightly, tears of love and gratitude welling up in my eyes and whispered, “You are the best Christmas gift!” This unforgettable experience forever reminds me to cherish those who shower us with boundless love.
