While we may think it feels good to complain, complaining has some bad effects associated with it.
Why isn't complaining beneficial Research shows that it connects our brain with negativity. The brain is designed to work efficiently. This means that when we repeat a thought, negative or positive, the nerve cells form a bridge between each other to pass information at a higher speed. Therefore, the next time we have a similar type of thought, it is more easily passed. This explains why certain thought patterns become habits.
Yet the harmful effects don't stop there. A study shows that complaining causes the hippocampus(海马区)，which plays a vital role in problem-solving, to become smaller.
In addition to causing brain damage, complaining also releases a stress hormone cortisol, a kind of chemical the body produces when we meet with some dangers. Constantly having a high level of cortisol results in high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and lower immunity(免疫力).
The ill effects of our complaining aren't just limited to ourselves, they also involve those around us. We tend to mirror the moods of our friends. For this reason, we should be cautious about having stubborn(固执的)complainers in our circle of friends.
The best way to deal with constant negativity is to develop a sense of gratitude. Just like complaining acts as a poison, gratitude acts as a medicine. Research shows it lowers cortisol levels by 23 percent, as well as reduces blood pressure and blood sugar. It also decreases tiredness and depression. Gratitude is the perfect cure for complaining, a behavior that steals our brain power, happiness and physical well-being.

Our tiny boat was ploughing through(费力穿过)the waves across the Indian Ocean and I was absolutely freezing. The further we got from the shelter of the land, the more I thought how foolish I'd been to come along on this trip.
The pilot of the boat looked almost 60 but, perhaps because of a lifetime on the open sea in the hot sun, was very fit and strong. I was wondering how he managed to find his way. To me, it seemed difficult enough to navigate a boat without any electronic equipment even on a sunny day.
So at least we were safe. But this was not what we had come along for. A look at the other divers' faces suggested that now they were also doubtful that we'd ever get the chance to see a whale shark-these weather conditions were totally unsuitable for diving! None of us spoke. It seemed too much of an effort. Then suddenly the boatman stopped the engine. He said a few words in. his own language to the diving instructor, who immediately jumped up from his seat and told us to get ready to dive.
When I jumped into the grey sea, I was sure I wouldn't see anything. But then... there it was! An enormous whale shark, slowly swimming through the water. I couldn’t believe my eyes-my first whale shark! I hardly dared breathe-I was afraid my streams of bubbles(气泡)might scare the huge creature away. And the other divers were equally awed. Slowly we approached this huge animal. It was swimming quite slowly and we were able to swim with it, looking at the beautiful markings on its back. I was still holding my breath, telling myself that this huge fish was harmless! Then I reached out and touched it, stroking(轻抚) its thick skin. Disorders of the brain are a growing worry. Twelve mental- health conditions affect about 970 million people around the world according to the Global Burden of Disease Project: more than one in ten of the population. This figure could well be an underestimate. Neurological(神经学的) problems such as stroke，migraine(偏头痛)，Parkinson’s and brain injury are collectively the leading global source of disability. Ageing populations with unhealthy ways of life are likely to make this problem much worse everywhere.
In an ideal world, science would be coming to the rescue. But the brain is a complex organ sometimes described as the most complex structure in the known universe. A private company spent an estimated $ 43 billion on research into therapies for Alzheimer's disease between 1998 and 2017 and came up empty-handed. That big failure is perhaps the biggest reason why, in the 2010s, many drug firms abandoned or cut back on neuroscience research
Happily, there are signs of a change. In our Technology Quarterly this week we report on a renaissance in neuroscience, with many drug companies, some of them big ones, showing renewed interest in the field. This fresh energy is coming from a variety of techniques and ideas. More precise diagnosis and well-confirmed biomarkers which reveal the course of disease, are improving clinical trials. New kinds of treatment such as gene therapy, are expanding the range of diseases that can be tackled. Other advances are an increasing amount of data, which is proving critical to understanding the biological roots of neurological problems.
As hopes rise for tackling this final frontier of bio-medicine, it is worth remembering that the secrets to a healthy brain are not only going to come from a pill or psychotherapist's treatments. The health of the brain is influenced by what goes on outside it such as nutrition, exercise, the abuse of alcohol, education, social connections and pollution. None of this should be surprising: The health of the brain is tied to the health and the well-being of the body that it sits in. Efforts to ensure better brain health are an investment that will keep bringing advantages to individuals, and to societies, for decades to come.
