The other day I walked along with my friends towards the cafeteria and outside I could see a crowd made up mostly of girls. I couldn’t make out what was happening. We came closer and were able to see that a lady was cutting a girl’s hair. Beside there was a poster which encouraged people to donate (捐赠) about 10 inches of their hair in order to make wigs (假发) for patients who suffered from cancer and had lost all or most of their hair.
I was moved by the courage of those girls who were excitedly waiting their turn to get their hair cut. My friends sensed this and asked me if I was considering donating my hair. I told them I would like to but I was a little anxious about how I would end up looking. But finally, I made up my mind.
I asked one of my friends to braid (编) my hair and the rest of them started cheering me on so I would not back off. We went outside and I was now in line. It was finally my turn so I walked towards the lady: she sat me down on a chair and didn’t even spend 30 seconds cutting my braid. More than half of my hair was put in a bag and I couldn’t hide my joy, I just couldn’t help but think about a person who would be happy with her new image. I knew I would never meet her, but I felt pleased with the act of kindness that I made that day.

A few weeks ago, a group of scientists produced a report about global warming and the natural world. They wanted to find out if global warming was dangerous for plants and animals. The scientists were surprised by what they found. They saw that during the next 50 years about 25% of land animals and plants will disappear from the Earth. More than 1 million plants and animal species will die out by 2050.
The head of the research team, Christ Thomas, who is a professor of conservation biology at the University of Leeds, said the results of their research were frightening. More than 10% of all plants and animals will disappear from the Earth. It is too late to save many plants and animals because of the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere. But the scientists say if we control greenhouse gases now, we can save many more plants and animals from disappearing.
The scientists studied some areas of the world with very rich biology. These areas were Europe, Australia, Central and South America, and South Africa. Their studies showed that species living in mountainous areas had a better chance of survival because they could move uphill to get cooler. In flat areas, such as deserts, plants and animals would have to move very long distances to get cooler, so they are in great danger of dying out. The scientists found many surprising things. For example, they found that half of the 24 species of butterfly they studied in Australia would soon disappear.
8. What does paragraph 1 center on
A. The result of the study. B. The cause of global warming.
C. The contribution of the study. D. The development of global warming.
9. What’s the purpose of the study led by Christ Thomas
A. To save animals and plants species.
B. To warn us of the dying out of species.
C. To call on people to control greenhouse gases.
D. To study the effect of greenhouse gases on the atmosphere.
10 Why are species in flat areas less likely to survive than those in mountainous areas
A. The Earth is getting warmer.
B. More species are disappearing.
C. They have to move very long distances.
D. They can move to high attitude to get cooler.
11. What can be the best title of this passage
A. The survival of species on the Earth B. Disappearing of animals in the world
C. Greenhouse effect and global warming D. A frightening discovery on global warming
D
Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but everyone is wearing mask. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. “As we get older,” he said, “our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same—even if we put on weight.”
Another company has also been working on this kind of software. Tech5 has AI that measures the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (the colored part of your eyes). Tech5 hopes to ignore all of the face below the nose.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. Touchless verification (验证) has become extremely important due to the COVID-19. More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime (犯罪). “It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s CEO. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports, Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang.
12. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Rule. B. Habit. C. Mistake. D. Problem.
13. What makes the software recognize people wearing masks
A. The eye area. B. The shape of face.
C. The color of the eyes. D. The facial expression.
14. What is Huang Lei’s attitude towards the software
A. Anxious. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.
15. What can we know about the new technology from the last paragraph
A. It needs further improving. B. It will be less popular in the future.
C. It won’t work if people wear glasses. D. It cannot store key facial information.

10. Why are species in flat areas less likely to survive than those in mountainous areas
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. C 11.
