Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, we have 4 minutes to get to our next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker (储物柜) first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention(放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits(肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said that we just needed to write what we thought, and we would pay attention to punctuation(标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I needed to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher said it is the one skill we need in every class.

School is a place that is familiar to everyone. Let’s find out what American students do in school.
An official dance party is held about twice a year in high schools in the United States. When the final football game is over for the season there is a homecoming party. Sometimes, students select a king from among the football players, and a queen from among the girls. Every student can attend and have fun with the help of their teachers. Sometimes, to the surprise of everyone, students, who devote all their time to study, come to the party in a beautiful dress.
The most exciting party that students can go to would have to be a prom (毕业舞会). Students attend it in dresses similar to those of Hollywood stars and the atmosphere is comparable to an Oscar Award party. Since such a party is for seniors, students usually stay up the night trying to enjoy their last year in high school.
In American schools, instead of the teachers going to different rooms, students have their own class schedules and go to different classrooms. When a student is away from school, they must have an explanation for being away along with the signature (签名) of a parent. The signed paper is then handed in to the school office. American students also enjoy a number of activities out of school like cheerleading (啦啦队), student government and a host of different sports.

Is running a marathon(马拉松) under two hours possible Will a human ever be able to run that fast Now, the world record for the 42.195km (26.219 miles) distance is held by the Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum. His time of 2: 00: 35 hours was achieved at the Chicago Marathon in 2023.
But studies published in the past have come to the conclusion that running a marathon under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1: 57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we may have to wait longer for this to happen.
To achieve an under two-hour marathon, an athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running plans and of course, the right nutrition(营养). Today’s perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated long distance races for years. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen(氧). Training at high altitudes (海拔)gives them a strong heart. Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and no wind will also be needed to attempt such a mark. An extremely fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London.
Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was at around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2: 30. But in the last 15 years, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.
On the other side, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of some medicine.
32. Why is the world record mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To show a human can run very fast.
B. To show an under two-hour marathon hasn’t been achieved yet.
C. To introduce the greatest success in the world.
D. To prove Kelvin Kiptum is the best.
33. Why is it difficult to see a time of around 1: 57
A. Training a perfect runner takes a long time.
B. It isn’t easy to find right running plans.
C. The nutritious food is hard to get.
D. It requires too many things to fit together.
34. What’s the meaning of the underlined part “have dominated” in the third paragraph
A. Have taken the lead in. B. Have got away from. C. Have got addicted to. D. Have taken care of.
35. What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A. Men will run faster and faster. B. Men made the greatest progress in 1930.
C. Achieving shorter time became more difficult. D. It’s impossible to break the marathon world record.
