We were talking about jeans. When we should have been carefully studying our volleyball teammates on the court, or at the very least cheering them on, Lacey and I were in a deep discussion about the suffering of trying on jeans with our moms, an unpleasant experience only two tweens forced to wear school uniforms 95% of the year could truly have. We were talking about jeans. When we should have been carefully studying our volleyball teammates on the court, or at the very least cheering them on, Lacey and I were in a deep discussion about the suffering of trying on jeans with our moms, an unpleasant experience only two tweens forced to wear school uniforms 95% of the year could truly have. This was 1995 and if there was one thing 12-year-olds could agree on, it was how badly they were treated when it came to jeans. “My mom will be like, ‘We can make them fit!’” I told Lacey with a smile.
Inside jokes like these would become the foundation of our friendship. When you’re in middle school, finding a friend to commiserate(同情)with is a matter of survival, and I found the very best. And then in high school, whether it was buying Starbucks after class or joining after-school clubs, we rarely did anything apart. Teachers and students alike felt surprised when they’d see one of us without the other we were that connected.
So it’s amazing that even though we put 3,000 miles between us in college and have spent at least two-thirds of our friendship that far away, we’re still best friends. A real achievement for two wildly different people: I think of Lacey as calm, cool and collected, whereas I am a bit more high-strung(易激动的). She’s raising three beautiful children. I have one. She grew up in a farm family. I was raised by a doctor and an actress. Any algorithm(计算程序)would likely say we’re not a match, but I can’t imagine my life without her.
Part of it is luck. I just happened to sit next to a super girl that day in the sports center. But more likely, it’s the effort we both put into staying close even as we were physically apart.

Hawk Salvage, located in the historic neighborhood on Grand Avenue, is the place to find one-of-a-kind things. The store features a collection of curious things of the past and, most recently, a huge selection of rare and unique houseplants.
Founded by Greg Hawk, who has traveled from coast to coast finding items for his store, Hawk Salvage is like a well-kept history museum, its walls and display cases were filled with ancient art and historical photos. Even the space is a slice of history — it served as an automotive garage in the1940s. The front of the shop is home to lots of greenery.
On October 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the store will host its first-ever community plant swap, where plant parents can bring their plants and trade them for new plants. Visitors can learn tips and tricks from other fellow plant lovers and enjoy live music, artist demonstrations, food trucks and more. It will be a plant party for the ages, Hawk says. To take part in the plant swap, guests must bring at least one live and healthy plant to trade for another plant of equal size.
Because his regular picking trips was put on hold, Hawk, who is also interested in gardening, started propagating(繁殖)plants. “I started looking at houseplants and it just opened up this huge can of worms of all the cool things that are out there, and now I find myself with more plants than I want to take care of.” he says. Hosting an event where he could clear away some of his plants while reconnecting the community is a win-win situation, he adds.
Hawk says the event is open to everyone. His advice for new plant fans “Be patient. Buy something simple to start with. Everything dies, so you’re going to kill plants — it’s part of the process,” he says. “I think the biggest tip that I would give is not to be afraid to experiment with your plants.”

The foundation of communication is language. With fewer opportunities to meet informally in the break room or grab a coffee together, the words chosen for calls, emails, or internal chats gain significance. “I’ve become much more aware of how specific words affect performance,” David Kauzlaric says. Even small word changes can have an impact on team morale(士气)and engagement. For example, consider the word “you”. That simple word can create communication challenges by expressing criticism that was never intended. “By replacing you with ‘I’ or ‘people’, my team members automatically feel less defensive and more inclined to provide feedback,” Kauzlaric says. Allowing a team to arrive at their solutions is essential for their development. Sometimes, however, habitual communication patterns can be a barrier to building that muscle. “When I zeroed in on my communication style, I realized my words were unintentionally disguising(掩盖)advice in the form of a question,” reflects David Kauzlaric. “I needed to let go of that habit and trust in my team to come up with their answer instead of giving them a solution.”
