Highlights and Travel Tips

When it comes to inspiring a generation of athletes, Alice Tai takes some beating. Partly because of her super abilities as a Paralympian swimmer—the 24-year-old is a world and European champion. But mostly it is because of her powerful back story.
She was born with clubfoot（畸形足）.She spent much of her childhood in a wheelchair due to 14 major surgeries before the age of 12. Alice learned to swim aged eight but it was not until October 2010 - when she could be classed as a disability swimmer—that things changed for her. She impressed scouts（星探）who persuaded her family to fund a trip to Sheffield for a competition.
"It literally snowballed from there," she said. "I went to my first Europeans in 2014, then the Paralympics in Rio. I ended up winning gold." As she found acceptance, Alice's self-belief rose. By 2019, she'd become a world champion and record holder in seven different swimming disciplines. I was more confident and comfortable within myself," she said.
“When I stepped up to the pool, every athlete there had a disability. I was finally around people who fully understood me, which changed my mind. I started to love myself." Still, Alice would continue to find herself in extreme pain, particularly in her right leg. "I cried sometimes, With a mixture of pain and frustration. My ankle was completely non-functional. It just seemed really silly that it was still there. So, as soon as I had the first meeting with the doctors and they agreed on my operation, I saw a better future for myself."
The surgery took place last year, successful. Waking up after the surgery, Alice felt she'd ended a nightmare. "As soon as I came around, I didn't have that pain anymore." she said. "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to stop, but learning how to dance in the rain," the Mirror reported later.

The study, from the University of York, found that adults aged 60 and over who play digital puzzle games had a greater ability to ignore irrelevant distractions（干扰）,but older adults who played strategy games did not show the same improvements in memory or concentration.
It is known that as humans age, their mental abilities tend to decrease, particularly the ability to remember a number of things at a single time—known as working memory. Previous research, however, has shown that the way we hold information in the brain changes as we get older, and so the York team looked at whether the impacts of particular types of mental stimulation, such as gaming, also had changed effects depending on age.
Dr. Fiona, from the University of York's Department of Psychology, said: "A lot of research has focused on action games, as it is thought that reacting quickly, keeping track of targets and so on helps attention and memory, but our new analysis shows that the action elements do not seem to offer significant benefits to younger adults. It instead seems to be the strategy elements of the games—planning and problem-solving for example—that stimulate better memory and attention in young people. We don't see this same effect on older adults, however, and more research is needed to understand why this is."
Dr. Joe Cutting, from the University of York's Department of Computer Science, said : “Generally people have a good ability to ignore irrelevant distractions. We would expect for example that a person could memorise the name of a street while being distracted by a child or a dog, but this ability does decline as we age.” Joe added," Puzzle games for older people had this surprising ability to support mental capabilities to the extent that memory and concentration levels were the same as a 20 year-olds who had not played puzzle games."
The researchers say future study could focus on why there is a difference between the impacts of types of games depending on the age of a player and whether this is connected to how the brain stores information as people age.

Another study found that subjects asked to recall a meaningful secret believed hills to be more dangerous and distances to be longer than those asked to recall a small secret. When researchers asked to help move books from their lab, the subjects harboring meaningful secrets lifted fewer piles.
Research shows an association between keeping a meaningful secret and illness ranging from the common cold to chronic（慢性的）diseases. It concludes that teens who open their mind to a parent or close friend report fewer physical complaints and less bad behavior, loneliness, and depression than those who sit on their secrets. One reason why secret keeping is such hard work is that secrets, like unwanted thoughts, tend to take up more brain space.
