Here comes Junior 3 Year! This means that the high school entrance exam will arrive in less than a year. How will you get through the final year of middle school and get ready for the big exam TEENS invited two students to share their thoughts.
Zeng Qingmian, 15, Jiangxi
I got a score of 700 out of 750 on the big exam. Junior 3 was quite stressful and it was even harder for a boarding school(寄宿学校) student like me. I needed to make detailed plans—not only for studying, but also daily chores like washing my clothes.
I was highly focused during class and tried to remember everything my teachers said to me, this is far more effective than spending time doing exercises after class. During self-study time at night, I took every chance to ask teachers questions. I also counted time while doing quizzes. This helped improve my learning efficiency(效率).
I didn’t have many review materials. My method was to make up my own questions. After solving a math problem, for example, I would design my own problems that used the same concepts(概念).
Huang Ziyi, 15, Beijing
I got a score of 520 out of 580 on the high school entrance exam. For me, knowing my strengths and keeping a stable mind are very necessary. The competition in Beijing is hard. Many students have tutors(导师). I once took a coding class, but found that I wasn’t good at it. So I gave up and focused more on what I’m good at.
I have applied this principle(原则) to my studies. I go over the key points of each unit to strengthen my skills in subjects like physics and math. When taking a test, I usually skip(跳过) questions I don’t know and try to solve them at the end if there is still some time left. One should learn to stay calm in situations like these. Don’t worry too much about the result of one test as long as you are learning and improving.
54. What does Zeng try to do in class
A. Make a study plan. B. Ask the teacher questions.
C. Listen to the teacher carefully. D. Do as many exercises as possible.
55. Why does Zeng count time while doing quizzes
A. To practice his handwriting. B. To learn the knowledge better.
C. To put extra pressure on himself. D. To save time for asking questions.
56. What does “this principle” in Huang’s story refer to
A. Keep a clear mind. B. Ask for help if necessary.
C. Focus on what you are good at. D. Spend more time on difficult questions.
57. What is the passage mainly about
A. How to study well in Junior 3. B. Ways to stay calm during big exams.
C. How to deal with pressure and worries. D. Unforgettable memories from one’s final year.

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economic boom(经济繁荣), and the capital Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as many foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires looking for jobs. These jobs didn’t pay well, and the people felt lonely with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango came into being.
At the beginning, the tango was a dance of the lower classes(阶级). It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time women were fewer than men, so if a man didn’t want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the women. Gradually, the dance spread into the upper classes of Argentinean society and became more respectable.
In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. The interest in international dance was especially strong in Paris. Every kind of dance from ballet to belly dancing could be found in Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes. Though not everyone liked the new dance, tango really attracted enough supporters to make it popular.
The popularity of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world. Soldiers who returned to the United States from World War I brought the tango to North America. Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after the task. This task offered good opportunities to scientists, which helped them to deepen their studies on the effect of cosmic rays(宇宙射线) on the growth and development of life on Earth.
Space-based mutation breeding(太空诱变育种) refers to the process of placing seeds in the environment such as microgravity(微重力), vacuums(真空) and cosmic radiation(宇宙辐射) during a spaceflight and then sending them back to Earth for further study and planting. Scientists study and examine several generations of plants grown from seeds which went into the space and study their changes-some are desirable while others are bad and negative. Those with good changes will be kept for further research, and will be introduced to farmers after getting permission.
Space breeding(育种) can make the seeds change faster than the experiments on the earth and can bring about some wonderful pared with the traditional methods, space-developed methods can make the seeds grow much better, such as having shorter growth periods and having more power to fight against diseases and insect.
China did its first space breeding experiment in 1987, using a satellite to carry seeds into space. Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in China that have been allowed to be planted across the country from grains to vegetables and fruits.

The Awakening Age is the most meaningful and interesting TV drama that I have ever seen. It was shown first on CCTV 1 on February 1, 2021. It shows history from the New Culture Movement(新文化运动) to the founding(成立) of the Communist Party of China(CPC).
I like it because I can feel the power of youth from the drama. In order to wake people up to the problems, many students gave speeches in the streets. They tried their best to fight for a better world. Also, they spread ideas of democracy(民主) and science no matter what troubles they would get into.
Among all the characters, I admire Chen Yannian the most. He has made great contributions to the growth of the CPC.
