Our mother didn’t trust us, my sister and me, to manage our own appearance when we were young. As a result, there were rules, and trends were largely ignored.
A few years ago, I was home for a visit when my mom, now in her early70s, called me into her bedroom. We were about ready to leave for dinner. “I don’t know what to wear,” she complained from her seat. “You girls always look so good.”
I paused in the doorway and looked at her, wondering if I’d misheard. “What do you mean ” I asked her. “You know what to wear.”
“No,” she answered. “I don’t. Can you pick something ”
I was so surprised.
This was the same woman who, in 1989, told my younger sister she wasn’t allowed to leave the house wearing a pair of ripped (有破洞的) jeans; the same woman who, in high school, called me while I was out at a party to ask if my hair was up. “You look better with it down.” she told me before I could answer.
I realized, suddenly, that my mother—always so strong—not only wanted my opinion, but needed my care.
I pulled a pair of blue jeans from the closet and a light blue sweater from her drawer. “Wear this with your black shoes.” I told her. She did.
My mother certainly doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. In fact, she still cares for my grandmother who lives with her. But with that one question, my mother and I started the role reversal (改变) that happens with all parents and all children, from caregiver to receiver.
Now, if I’m visiting or we’re together, it’s rare for her to wear anything without checking with me first.
I’m still always a bit surprised by her admission of the uncertainty.
But every so often, it seems like she asks me just to be able to disagree with my answer and pick out something on her own. And when she does, I just tell her what I think of the way she looks. Sometimes it’s “great” and sometimes it’s “awful”.

A. came to realize that her mother needed her care
B. was happy to do something for her mother
C. was worried that her mother was too old to live alone
D. had no idea what was suitable for her mother
6. When the author gives her opinion about clothes, her mother _______.
A. always accepts her suggestions happily
B. sometimes chooses to follow her own ideas
C. is often surprised by what the author says
D. still shows uncertainty about what to wear
7. The author wrote this article mainly to ________.
A. show what it is like to have a strict mother

D. stress her mother’s great influence on her clothes and hairstyles.
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

C
The race skywards began in America. In the late1800s, industrialization had driven urban populations and land prices up, making tall buildings increasingly cost-effective, according to Carol Willis, director of the Skyscraper Museum in New York, “The very first tall buildings were office buildings that concentrated a work force, piled one on top of the other in order to make business very efficient, ”she says.
Like all major changes in architecture, the trend was underpinned by engineering. The development of steel framework, which could be used instead of load-bearing stones, made it easier and cheaper to build tall. The coming of the elevator, meanwhile, made living on higher floors far more convenient.
Though similar in shape, today's skyscrapers (摩天大楼) look little like those built in the first half of the 20th century. This is mostly thanks to architecture's next major technological shift:the curtain wall.
Postwar developments in manufacturing meant that huge panes of glass could be produced quickly and uniformly, and glass windows soon became the front of choice for high-rises. As well as allowing for greater floor space and more natural light, glass exteriors (外部) help. buildings resist greater wind loads.
There are now 191 completed skyscrapers that are at least 300 meters tall. But that doesn't mean our cities will grow taller indefinitely. While each additional story adds sellable floor space, construction costs also rise. All buildings reach a point where adding an extra floor will cost more money than it brings.
“Every city wants to have this landmark that gives that sense of distinct culture ”but it also needs places for people to live and work in urban settings“without the city sprawling (无序扩张), ”explains Hong Kong architect Simon Chan.
The next big challenge facing architects goes beyond height:At a time when buildings and their construction account for more than a third of the world's energy consumption and contribute about 40% of greenhouse gas emissions(排放), there are new costs to consider.
Whether it's employing more energy-efficient materials, encouraging natural air or using buildings themselves to generate solar or wind energy, reducing carbon emissions is the new frontier for many skyscraper architects.
8. What does the underlined word“underpinned” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Created. B. Prepared. C. Suggested. D. Supported.
9. What made living on higher floors much more convenient
A. The development of steel framework. B. Load-bearing stones.
C. The use of the elevator. D. The curtain wall.
10. What can we know from paragraph 5
A. Our cities will grow taller definitely.
B. All skyscrapers are at least 300 meters tall.
C. Construction cost rises as the stories increase.
D. The profit for builders will be greater as the building becomes higher.
11. What's the next big challenge facing architects
A. How to build the greenest building. B. How to build the strongest building.
C. How to build the tallest building in the world. D. How to build the most comfortable building.
D 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据后文“The development of steel framework, which could be used instead of load-bearing stones, made it easier and cheaper to build tall.(钢结构的发展,可以用来代替承重的石头,使建造高楼更容易和更便宜。)”
根据第二段“ The coming of the elevator, meanwhile, made living on higher floors far more convenient.(与此同时,电梯的出现让住在更高楼层的人更加方便。)”
根据第五段“While each additional story adds sellable floor space, construction costs also rise.(虽然每增加一层楼就会增加可销售的楼面面积,但建筑成本也会上升。)”
根据最后一段“reducing carbon emissions is the new frontier for many skyscraper architects.(减少碳排放是许多摩天大楼建筑师的新前沿。)” 故选A。
D
Mountain regions are not just playgrounds for the richer citizens on the planet, however. The disappearing snows of Mount Kilimanjaro are a worrying sign that nowhere is safe from the adverse effects of human actions. The United Nations has identified three main areas that need to be addressed to ensure the future safety of the world’s mountains. These are: the protection of mountain ecosystems, the encouragement of peace and stability in mountain regions, and assistance for mountain people to maintain their ways of life.
From the busy cities of India to the farmlands of California, more than half the world’s population is dependent on mountains for their fresh water supply. Global warming, deforestation, mining and heavy farming seriously damage breakable mountain ecosystems and put vital fresh water sources at risk.
Mountain regions host a large proportion of the world’s wars. From Afghanistan to the Balkans and the Andes to many parts of Africa, territorial(领土的) and drug related conflicts have damaging effects on the local environment and the lives of the local people. Fighting makes essential tasks such as farming impossible. Land mines make large areas of potential farming ground unusable. Also schools, roads, bridges and other important infrastructure(基础设施) are left in ruins.
Mountain people are among the poorest, least represented groups on the earth. They face many hardships and each day can be, “a test of survival”. Damage to mountain ecosystems worsens their situation and leaves them even more unprotected to disease and ‘natural’ disasters such as floods and landslides. It’s been recommended that forest profit should be reinvested in mountain communities and the people living there should be given a stronger political voice. Their fate is in many ways directly connected with that of people living at sea level.
There is an old motto for visitors to the countryside which advises them to leave nothing but footprints. It is still as relevant today as it always was. Unfortunately, the size of our footprints seems to be getting larger.
12. What the writer discussed in the previous sections is most probably about .
A. mountain ecosystems B. mountain regions
C. mountain people D. mountain sports
13. The word “adverse” (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to “__________”.
A. direct B. harmful
C. positive D. powerful
14. Wars have directly brought the following effects EXCEPT __________.
A. inadequate supply of fresh water B. impossible farming
C. mountain people’s poor living condition D. ruined infrastructure
15. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A. Mountain people have enough political voice to protect themselves.
B. More money should be raised to establish mountain communities.
C. Worsened ecosystems put mountain people’s lives under threat.
D. Visitors to mountains have left nothing but large footprints.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据文章第一段“Mountain regions are not just playgrounds for the richer citizens on the planet, however.(然而,山区不仅仅是地球上富人的游乐场)”可推知,之前的部分应该是介绍爬山运动的。
根据adverse下文“The United Nations has identified three main areas that need to be addressed to ensure the future safety of the world’s mountains.(联合国已经确定了三个需要解决的主要领域,以确保世界山区未来的安全)”及上文“The disappearing snows of Mount Kilimanjaro are a worrying sign(乞力马扎罗山正在消失的积雪是一个令人担忧的迹象)”可推知,人类活动对这些地方造成了不利影响,adverse与harmful意思相近,表示“有害的”。
根据文章第三段“From Afghanistan to the Balkans and the Andes to many parts of Africa, territorial(领土的) and drug related conflicts have damaging effects on the local environment and the lives of the local people.Fighting makes essential tasks such as farming impossible. Land mines make large areas of potential farming ground unusable. Also schools, roads, bridges and other important infrastructure are left in ruins.(从阿富汗到巴尔干半岛和安第斯山脉再到非洲许多地区,与领土和毒品有关的冲突对当地环境和当地人民的生活造成了破坏性影响。战争使得农业等基本任务变得不可能。地雷使大片潜在的农田无法使用。此外,学校、道路、桥梁和其他重要基础设施也成为废墟)”可知,文章提到了战争带来的直接影响有无法耕作的农田,山区人们艰苦的生活条件和被破坏的基础设施,A“淡水供应不足”,文中没有提到。故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“Damage to mountain ecosystems worsens their situation and leaves them even more unprotected to disease and ‘natural’ disasters such as floods and landslides. (对山区生态系统的破坏使他们的处境恶化,使他们更不受疾病和洪水、山体滑坡等“自然”灾害的保护)”可推知,生态系统恶化使山区人民的生命受到威胁。故选C。
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The popularity of Facebook has caused a shift in how people realize themselves: the “like” button has become nothing more than a self-esteem (自尊) booster. ____16____ It can take years and years, but there are shortcuts you can use to achieve it.
____17____ You’re not arrogant (自大的) if you love yourself. In fact, arrogance is often the foundation of low self-esteem and insecurity. Try this exercise: stand in front of the mirror and tell your reflection everything you love about yourself. Accept what you don’t like about yourself. This may feel uncomfortable at first, but change often does.
Do you socialize with negative people ____18____. This may seem unfair, but those negative people will simply strengthen what you don’t like about yourself. People like to socialize with happy, positive people. The happiest people in life are the ones that look at what they have, not what they don’t have.
There are a lot of people who aren’t aware they have a negative voice in their head.
____19____. Whenever you hear a negative comment, immediately replace it with a positive one. Your brain is like a computer: whatever command you input, it responds, so if you ask it a question like “why do I always mess up ” your brain will find plenty of examples to support it.
Celebrating your successes is another good way. We’re often so busy in life that we seldom take the time to stop and really reflect on what we’ve achieved. Take the time once a day to ask yourself what you’re proud of having achieved that day. ____20____ Remember that it’s not the outcome that’s always important, but the process.
A. Learn to love yourself.
B Catch your negative self-talk.
C. Appreciate how far you’ve come.
D. If so, consider finding new friends.
E. When self-esteem is high, we lose our fear of envy.
F. Of course not, few people like socializing with negative people.
G. But what’s important is to develop high self-esteem from inner.
G 17. A 18. D 19. B 20. C
根据空前的“The popularity of Facebook has caused a shift in how people realize themselves: the like button has become nothing more than a self-esteem (自尊) booster. (Facebook的流行改变了人们认识自己的方式:“点赞”按钮只不过是一种自尊的助推器。)”可知,空后承接的是关键词self-esteem。同时根据空后的“It can take years and years, but there are shortcuts you can use to achieve it. (这可能需要几年又一年的时间,但你可以使用一些捷径来实现它。)”中的it可知,其指代的就是设空中的self-esteem。此外,根据句意,Facebook上的点赞只不过是一种自尊的助推器(表面上),而真正实现自尊的应该是从自我的内心深处。故设空处应该与前文构成转折关系,G选项“But what’s important is to develop high self-esteem from inner. (但重要的是要从内心培养高度的自尊)”与此相符。故选G。
【17题详解】
设空处位于段首,应该是本段的主旨。空后的内容是对主旨进行解释和说明。根据空后的“You’re not arrogant (自大的) if you love yourself. (如果你爱自己,你就不傲慢。)”可知,后面的内容强调的是“如何爱自己?”,与A选项“Learn to love yourself. (学会爱自己)”相呼应。故选A。
同时根据空后的“People like to socialize with happy, positive people. (人们喜欢和快乐、积极的人交往。)”可知,作者建议远离情绪消极的人,多与积极的人交朋友,即换一些新朋友。同时,D选项“If so, consider finding new friends. (如果这样的话,考虑交一些新朋友)”中的if so是对“与消极的人交往事实”的重复。承接上文。故选D。
【19题详解】
设空处位于段首,应该是本段的段旨。空后的内容是对段旨进行解释和说明。根据空后的“Whenever you hear a negative comment, immediately replace it with a positive one. (每当你听到消极的评价,立即用积极的评价代替它。)”可知,要揪出消极的评价,用积极的评价来取代它。B选项中的“Catch your negative self-talk. (捕捉你消极的自我对话)”中的negative self-talk与此呼应,故选B。
【20题详解】
根据空前的“Take the time once a day to ask yourself what you’re proud of having achieved that day. (每天花一次时间问问自己,你为当天的成就感到自豪的是什么。)”可知,要时时刻刻去反思我们所实现和获得的东西,因此设空处应该强调“对于自己已经获得的成就心存感激。”C选项“Appreciate how far you’ve come. (感激当前自己收获)”相呼应。故选C。

On the first day of fourth grade, my teacher, Mrs. Brown, told my class a story about her husband Rob, who is a brain cancer survivor. She became emotional as she talked about their journey through his treatment and recovery. After what Mrs. Brown experienced with Rob’s illness, she decided to devote part of her life to helping people in similar situations. She told us about a local organization she was a part of called Be Head Strong, which works to support and comfort families with a member suffering from brain cancer.
Mrs Brown never showed any sadness about the disease. She instead spoke only with words of determination to find a cure. Through her positive spirit she showed us how strong hope could be.
My parents taught me form a very young age that making wise choices with my money is important. I would always set aside most of my $2.50-a-week allowance. By the end of the school year, I had saved over one hundred dollars, $131.30 to be exact. One day I was wondering what to do with it. I thought about the stories Mrs. Brown told us. I decided that was where I wanted my money to go.
As the last day of school approached, I told my parents about my gift for Mrs. Brown. My mom helped me wrap the heart-shaped box full of dollars and coins. After all the other kids had left on the last day of school, I handed Mrs. Brown the present. As she opened it, I told her that I wanted the money to go to Be Head Strong to help people like Rob. She broke into tears and hugged me tightly. At last, she invited me to Be Head Strong’s annual fundraiser and auction.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 1:
The night’s theme was hope and giving and many stories were shared. One of the most inspirational ones was of a young girl named Hannah. She was a six-year-old girl who had suffered from serious brain cancer. I remembered her from the stories Mrs. Brown shared. Mrs. Brown had explained to us that Hannah s cancer was strong, but Hannah always had a positive and happy attitude. I understood then that it was people like Hannah who aroused the hope that fueled organizations like Be Head Strong.
Para. 2:
At the end of the night’s auction, people were asked to donate what they could. I was called on stage. The auctioneer told everyone the story of my gift to Mrs. Brown, the $131.30. At the end he asked, How many of you are willing to do what a fourth grader did and donate $ 131.30 At that point nearly everyone in the room raised their bidding numbers. At that moment I realized that months of allowance had become something bigger than that.

Postwar developments in manufacturing meant that huge panes of glass could be produced quickly and uniformly and glass windows soon became the front of choice for high-rises.
“Every city wants to have this landmark that gives that sense of distinct culture, ”but it also needs places for people to live and work in urban settings“without the city sprawling (无序扩张), ”explains Hong Kong architect Simon Chan.
D
Mountain regions are not just playgrounds for the richer citizens on the planet however.
A. direct B. harmful
C. positive D. powerful
14 Wars have directly brought the following effects EXCEPT __________.
A. inadequate supply of fresh water B. impossible farming
C. mountain people’s poor living condition D. ruined infrastructure

B. Catch your negative self-talk.
C. Appreciate how far you’ve come.
D. If so, consider finding new friends.
E. When self-esteem is high, we lose our fear of envy.

Mrs. Brown never showed any sadness about the disease.
