Hello and welcome to English with Lucy. Today we have another topic:“Four common
British expressions.” Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my
social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on
Facebook. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well.
Four Common British Expressions:
“A piece of cake.”
And this is very similar to “easy peasy, lemon squeezy,” which we've discussed in a
2
{#{QQABRQaQogCAAAJAAQgCAwWCCEOQkAACAIoOQAAIsAAAgAFABAA=}#}
former video. And basically, it means very easy. So I might come out of an easy exam saving,
“That exam was a piece of cake.”
“Break a leg!”
It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive. And “Break a leg!”
means “Good luck!”. So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying
“Good luck!” I might say “Break a leg!”
“It cost an arm and a leg.”
And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, “My bag cost an arm
and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money.
“To call it a day.”
And this means “to end a task”.So, for example, “I'm feeling a bit tired. I think I'll call it
a day.” That means “I think I'll stop here. Let's finish.”
Thank you so much for watching this program of “Four Common British Expressions.” I
hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something.

My father told me a family story about his mother, my grandmother.
In 1949, my father had just returned home from the war. On every American highway
you could see soldiers in uniform hitchhiking home to their families, as was the custom at that
time in America.
Sadly, the excitement of this reunion with his family soon disappeared. My grandmother
became very ill and had to be in hospital. The doctors told my father that she needed a blood
transfusion immediately or she wouldn't live through the night. The problem was that
Grandmother's blood type was AB , a very rare type even today, but even harder to get then
because there were no blood banks or air flights to ship blood. All the family members had
their blood tested, but not one member was a match. So the doctors gave the family no hope;
my grandmother was dying.
My father left the hospital in tears to gather up all the family members, so that everyone
would get a chance to tell Grandmother good bye. As my father was driving down the
highway, he passed a soldier in uniform hitchhiking home to his family. Deep in sadness, my
father had no inclination at that moment to do a good deed. Yet it was almost as if something
outside himself pulled him to a stop, and he waited as the stranger climbed into the car.
My father was too upset to even ask the soldier his name, but the soldier noticed my
father's tears right away and asked why. My father told this total stranger everything.
It got very quiet in the car. Then this soldier reached his hand out to my father, in which
3
{#{QQABRQaQogCAAAJAAQgCAwWCCEOQkAACAIoOQAAIsAAAgAFABAA=}#}
rested the dog tags from around his neck. The blood type on the tags was AB . The soldier
told my father to turn the car around and get him to the hospital.
My grandmother lived until 1996, and to this day no one in our family knows the
soldier's name. But my father has often wondered, was he a soldier or an angel in uniform
24.Why did the author's father leave the hospital

A.After her serious illness, Grandmother lived 47 years.
B.Grandmother's children refused to help her.

Annoying brother or sister may break your toys, but he or she may help you when you
are in trouble. A new study suggests that younger siblings might be good for your health.
Children who didn’t welcome a baby brother or sister into the family before first grade
had almost three times the likelihood of obesity compared with kids who experienced the birth
of a sibling when they were around 3 to 4 years old, the study found.
“It is possibly because when there is a younger sibling in the family, a child might
become more active — for example, running around more with their younger sibling,” said
Julie Lumeng, a public health researcher at the University of Michigan.
“Maybe families are more likely to take the kids to the park when there is a younger
sibling, or maybe the child is less likely to sit, watching TV, when there is a younger sibling to
ask them to join more active pretend play,” she added.
Mealtimes might also be different with a second kid at the table. Parents of only child can
often focus too much on what their kid eats, which can lead to bad eating habits, some
previous research suggests.
“When parents use restrictive or pressure to eat feeding practices, children have an
increased risk of being overweight,” said Jerica Berge, a researcher at the University of
Minnesota.
“When a new child is introduced, parents may relax their focus on the older child’s eating
behaviors, making it possible for the older child to self regulate their eating,” said Berge.“This
self regulation may lead to a healthier weight for the child with a sibling.”
For their study, Lumeng and colleagues followed 697 US children from birth through age
6. However, the authors acknowledged that their study lacked objectively measured birth

weights and information on events such as a divorce, a move or a job loss in the family — all
of which can influence the odds of children becoming obese. For more information about this
topic, please click here.
28.Compared to children with younger siblings, an only child may .
A.become overweight B.become selfish
C.have a healthier lifestyle D.get better parental care
29.How may children change when they have a younger sibling
A.They may refuse to play at home.
B.They may have more physical activities.
C.They may feel annoyed and unhappy.
D.They may spend more time with their parents.
30.For parents, which of the following may be good for their children's health
A.Paying more attention to kids' eating habits.
B.Using some restrictive feeding practices.
C.Allowing kids to control their eating.
D.Letting the older child regulate the diet of the younger child.
31.Where can we read this passage
A.On TV. B.On the Internet. C.On the radio. D.In the newspaper.

“Farm to table” is the name of a movement that encourages people to eat locally grown
food. The farm to table idea has become more popular in recent years. But there is also a
movement that brings “table to farm”. Its purpose is to connect people to the land and to honor
local farmers by creating a sort of restaurant without walls.
Its founder, Jim Denevan, got the idea for this kind of “culinary adventure (美食探险)”,
as he called it, ten years ago. He recently prepared tables for more than a hundred people at
Briars Farm in Virginia. He and his eight member team arrived the night before. Chefs (厨师)
from a local restaurant prepared the dinner.
Jim Denevan's brother is a farmer and he himself is a chef. He thought that the idea of a
meal served right on the farm made sense, though not everyone agreed.
“But I wanted to make the idea work, so I decided to cross the country,” said Denevan. “I
went all the way across the United States and set the table on farms, ranches (大牧场) and
beaches, and all the places where food came from.”
“This kind of event connects us with a lot of enthusiastic people, people that we can form
relationships with,” said Matt Szechenyi, who operates Briars Farm.
The tour of the farm ends at the dinner table. The meats in the meal come from Matt
Szechenyi’s farm. The vegetables come from nearby farms. Guests and local farmers sit
together.
Annoica Ingram came with a friend. “The food is wonderful. I appreciate their hard work.
I see everything they have to do to take care of the animals and make sure they are
well cared for. Without them, I think, we’ll have big problems,” she said.
32.What is the main purpose of the movement “table to farm”?
A.To provide people with healthy food.
5
{#{QQABRQaQogCAAAJAAQgCAwWCCEOQkAACAIoOQAAIsAAAgAFABAA=}#}

Moving into a new home in a new neighborhood is an exciting experience. Of course,
you want to make sure that you become an accepted and valuable part of your new
neighborhood. The easiest way to accomplish this is to make sure you conduct yourself as a
good neighbor should. 36
Perhaps one of the most important things you can do as a good neighbor is to keep your
property (房产) neat, clean, and in good repair. 37 By choosing to keep the outside of
the home in great shape, you will help to improve the look and feel of the area.
Second, take the overall appearance of the neighborhood seriously. When going for a
walk, take along a small garbage bag. 38 This small act will let your neighbors know
that you care about the area.
39 If a neighbor is going to be out of town, offer to collect mail and newspapers. If
a neighbor suffers an illness, offer to do the grocery shopping. Let them know that you are
there to help in any way that is acceptable, while still respecting the privacy of your neighbor.
40 By following the basic rules of respecting others, taking care of what belongs to
you, and taking pride in the appearance of the neighborhood in general, you will quickly
become a good neighbor that everyone appreciates.
A.In general, keep an eye on their property while they are gone.
B.A good neighbor is also one who likes to help out in small ways.
C. Being a good neighbor is more or less about considerate behavior.
D.Sometimes neighbors may go to the supermarket together to do shopping.
E.Should you come across waste paper thrown out of a passing car, pick it up.
F.People tend to take pride in keeping everything in their street fresh and inviting.
G.Here are a few tips to help you win over everyone in the neighborhood quickly.
