Since winning the BBC Young Musician competition in 2016, Sheku Kanneh-Mason has
performed at a royal wedding and released music that has topped the charts. Now he has released a new album called Song. “Because the cello(大提琴) sings,” he explains. “There are no boundaries to music,” he said, “I enjoy what I enjoy.”
Sheku comes from an incredible musical family in which all six of his siblings (he is the third child of seven) play instruments to a high standard—yet neither parents are musicians. Every spare penny goes into the children’s musical education. The whole family practised at home, which meant he sometimes had to play cello in the bathroom.
Every Saturday, Sheku wakes up at the crack of dawn in order to catch the train to London. He uses the journey to catch up with his A-Level homework. However, Sheku still finds time for his other hobbies —he enjoys football, table tennis and listens to a wide range of music. Sheku began to play the cello at the age of six, after attending a concert. By the time he was nine, he had achieved Grade 8 and earned the top marks in the country. Since then he has won numerous awards.
“I would love to inspire more diversity in young people taking up classical music.”
Sheku is also passionate about building better opportunities for young people of any background to learn music at school. “You might never want to go on to become a musician, but it’s still so important. I’d love to help bring more music to schools.”
Many schools are having to cut music lessons to save money, which Kanneh-Mason believes deprives young people. “Children should study music for music’s sake,” he said. “It connects the emotional side of your brain ——the creativity, the empathy (understanding how other people feel)—with something practical. To bring them together is a very powerful thing.”
What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
Sheku’s hard work and talent.
Sheku’s family's music atmosphere.
Music talent of Sheku and his siblings.
Sheku’s parents’ support for music education. 25.What can be inferred about Sheku from Paragraph 3
A. He is social and energetic. B. He has a lot of homework.
C. He stood out when young. D. He prefers sports to music.
According to Sheku, why should young people take up music
It can encourage the young when they are in difficulty.
It can provide more opportunities for people at school.
It can make them role models for others if they learn music.
It can combine the emotional side of the brain with real situations. 27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce a young cellist. B. To advertise a competition.
C. To stress the value of teachers. D. To attach importance to music.
C
A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.
Gestures can be as informative as speech, but hand gestures are so common that we rarely notice we’re using them.
While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestions, those of children are known to be particularly influenced, said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University. Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally(故意地).
Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers; when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic ”, the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is consciously lying, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory.
To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic ”. But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box, is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely.
And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids, Broaders said as hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases. “It certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”
In general, Broaders advises parents and other adults to “try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event.Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.”
What do we know about gestures according to the text
A. They have not any function at all. B. They are rarely used by people.
C. They have a certain effect on children. D. They are often used by social workers. 29.Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders
A. These gestures are very attractive. B. Their memories are affected easily.
C. Children are easy to tell lies. D. These gestures are used frequently. 30.What does the underlined word “impart” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Separate. B. Tell apart. C. Confuse. D. Pass on. 31.What would be the best title for the text
Gestures—a Useful Way of Education
Gestures Can Mislead Children
Gestures Mean Adults’ Directions
Gestures Affect Children Too Much
D
Young children are significantly more likely than adults to have their opinions influenced by robots, according to a new research. The study, conducted at the University of Plymouth, compared how adults and children respond to an identical(相同的) task when in the presence of both their peers (同龄人) and robots.
It showed that while adults regularly have their opinions influenced by peers, something also demonstrated in previous studies, they are largely able to resist being persuaded by robots. However, children aged between seven and nine were more likely to give the same responses as the robots, even if they were obviously incorrect.
The study asks people to look at a screen showing four lines and say which two match in length. When alone, people almost never make a mistake but when doing the experiment with others, they tend to follow what others are saying.
When children were alone in the room in this research, they scored 87% on the test, but when the robots join in their score drops to 75%. And of the wrong answers, 74% matched those of the robot.
Professor Belpaeme said, “People often follow the opinions of others and we’ve known for a long time that it is hard to resist taking over views and opinions of people around us. But as robots will soon be found in the home and the workplace, we were wondering if people would follow robots.
“What our results show is that adults do not follow what the robots are saying. But when we did the experiment with children, they did. It shows children can perhaps have more of an affinity (亲和力) with robots than adults, which does pose the question: What if robots were to suggest, for example, what products to buy or what to think ”
What did the adults do when staying with robots
They generally refused the robots’ effects.
They totally accepted the robots’ suggestions.
They tried to persuade robots to resist them.
They usually compared robots with their children.
Why did some children make more mistakes in the experiment
Because children were not as clever as the adults.
Because robots reflected better than human beings.
Because robots in the presence made mistakes.
Because children wanted to affect the robots on purpose.
What is Professor Belpaeme’s attitude towards the result of the experiment
He is optimistic about the result.
He is worried about the future.
He doesn’t care about the result.
He doubts the result of the research.
What should be followed after the last paragraph
What is the meaning of the research
What should adults do to avoid the problem
Why are children more likely to be influenced
What will be done to solve the problem

John and Nancy were left with their grandmother Linda after their mom was hospitalized for illness. They were curious about when they could finally see their mom. “The hospital
won’t allow her to leave until all of her medical bills are settled. I have given your mom all I could, but there’s still a large amount that we need to pay off,” Linda explained. John and Nancy missed their mom a lot and wanted her to come back home as soon as possible.
“What if we put up a lemonade stand (摊位), John ” Nancy asked her older brother. “We can pick the lemons from the garden and make fresh juice out of them,” she suggested. Her brother smiled, “That’s a great idea, Nancy!” From then on, John and Nancy stayed outside the entire afternoon after school selling lemonade. A week went by, but they only managed to earn ten dollars.
On Saturday morning, they sat on the side of the yard, looking worried. After a couple of seconds, their silent pondering (沉思) was interrupted by loud police sirens. “Hey, fellas!” one of the policemen greeted. “My colleague Jacob said that his neighbor had a lemonade stand in front of their yard.” The two children nodded. “I’m sorry, officer. But I didn’t think there would be anything wrong with that. Besides, we didn’t earn a lot,” John tried to explain.
“Don’t worry. You’re not in trouble. I bought a cup of it from you two the other day, remember I asked why you were selling lemonade, and you told me it was to raise funds to get your mom out of the hospital,” Jacob interrupted upon seeing John and Nancy looked nervous.
“I told my friends over here, and we decided we wanted to e to the back of the police car, and we have something to show you,” Jacob told the kids. They slowly made their way to the back of one of the police cars and saw a nicely-painted wooden lemonade stand. “That’s beautiful!” Nancy said in surprise.

第二节参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
“There’s a big food festival downtown today, and we got you a stand.” Jacob said. “Why not go there and give it a shot ” He continued to ask the kids, who could barely contain their excitement and jumped up with wide joy. “Yes, officers!” they exclaimed, a big smile broadening from ear to ear. It was not long before all the lemonade was gathered. The officers soon set up the lemonade stand and uploaded a post introducing their experience, which went viral and caused quite a stir in the neighbourhood. Grandma and the two kids were surprised to see their stand packed solid with people attracted by lemonade.
Paragraph 2:
There was a large crowd eager to buy lemonade. By the end of that day, the children were shocked to see that apart from the money raised, they also received loads of cards with warm and encouraging words. Grandma took the cards with trembling hands, cradling them in arms with tears brimming in her eyes. As soon as their mom was discharged from the hospital, they visited the police station and thanked the officers for their generosity and kindness. John and Nancy hugged Jacob tightly, knowing that they would never forget what they had been through and would cherish the love for good.

A four-year-old girl surprised the audiences all over the world when she spoke seven languages fluently on a TV show.
Della participated in the Russian reality TV show Incredible People, impressing judges in Moscow with her remarkable language skills. Besides her native Russian, Della speaks English, German, Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic. That includes the six official United Nations languages with the addition of German. Instead of just having some simple small talks, Della is actually able to communicate in these languages. During the show she managed to answer questions based on the school curriculum in all these languages. Della’s mother started teaching her daughter English at the age of two but as soon as she noticed that Della was interested in it, she began to let her daughter be tutored by native speakers for other languages.
Language specialists have been just as impressed as Della’s global audiences. One language expert was quoted as saying, “Such cases are rare but have happened in the past.” He believes that Della will not lose her knowledge but warns at some point it can become frozen if she does not continue to use and practice it.
